Wiibrew custom firmware: Custom IOS installer, DVD dumper *Update* |

Major news from the Wiibrew front! Stalwart Wii homebrew developer waninkoko has done it again, making waves in the community with the release of Custom IOS37, the Wii's first custom firmware around. For now, the firmware patch doesn't do much, but it's a first step in a long journey as this opens the door to custom firmware being released left and right, if the PSP homebrew community is any proof of that.
To demonstrate the power of the custom firmware, waninkoko has also released a Wii DVD Dumper, as well as a new version of GenPlus, the Genesis emulator for the Wii. The new build features support for the new firmware. He also provided an uninstaller for the Custom IOS. Here's a vid of the custom firmware in action, courtesy of our own linkinworm:
As linkinworm in the forums stated, you'll need "IOS37-64-v2070.wad" to get the custom firmware to work. Make sure to read the documentation included in all the download archives for more information.
Thanks to Maxexcloo and linkinworm for the heads up!

So you can dump DVDs, you could do that with nitrotux's app.
And there's a GenPlus emulator, which is useless considering we have one that doesn't require this.

this mainly unlocks the dvd drive, 1 allows you to read ALL of the disk nitrotuxs doesnt,(to much to explain and for me to be arsed) 2 allows you to use the dvd drive as a rom storage medium, 1st emular of its kind on wii, the included emulator only allows this with the cIOS installed as it incudes these DVD patches.

The guy that Bushing and co. said we should all ignore?

I installed the custom firmware and liked the ability to dump to the internal SD card because my SD-Gecko adapter broke and was being held together by ducktape. It was getting quite annoying. The only complaint is that the dumper could auto detect the size of the memory card and automatically detect the type of disc. This is my only complaint, because SDDVDDUMP can do it just fine. That will probably be implemented later. Anyway good work. And take that Nintendo.

Lose the ability to play Wii games? What the hell are you talking about? They work just fine.

"[ KUDOS ]:
- Team Twiizers and devkitPRO devs for their great work in libogc.
- All the betatesters.
- nitrotux, for his IOS5."
All the IOS does is remove the restriction of reading the data on a DVD outside of running a game.
This in no way, however, affects the ability to run commercial games.
Don't believe me? Try it yourself, he's also released an uninstaller, and gives people their credit in the readme.

After part1 dump, I can't continue. Another user on tehskeen has the same problem. Maybe a bug, but I can't make it work.

One of the updates that ninty released in 3.3 patched flaws in one of the OLD ios's. This is what made it so that trucha disks would not work. They exploited that IOS flaw. Now, since its patched Trucha is broken, and so is the datel free loader.
NOW, by installing this custom IOS it is WIDE OPEN. so anyone that is making a custom homebrew, or wants to make Generation 2 trucha disks can force it to REQUIRE this patched wide open IOS file. IN a sense it is custom firmware. There is still no reason why nintendo could not just make it delete the IOS in a future update. But then the cat and mouse game gets more interesting. this is only the FIRST cIOS. Its not difficult for someone to make custom patches for ALL existing ios files to open up their protection. Its also not difficult to create a the same ios with a new number. So for example, if ninty tried to wipe out cIOS 555, it could dupelecate itself as cIOS 556, or 666, or 787 or any number it wanted.
The only problem with all this is that every time you change the cIOS number you also have to change ALL the homebrews that call for that number. The trouble is in figuring out how to make it so ninty can NOT alter the cIOS without the right permissions. I dont know if its possible to encorperate a password protection to overwritting it, but it could be worth a shot.
The whole deal with Waninkoko and bushing is more about ethics than anything. I am sure Bushing wishes he could STOP waninkoko from dabling down the road he is. He is certainly on the edge of legal and piracy. And if I were a betting man I would BET that waninkoko will in some way be responsible for ANY ISO loader type homebrew that comes out. My opinion about the if ninty will leave us alone if we keep it on the legal side differs from wiibrew. Ninty has an obligation to the developers to keep the system locked up. As long as unsigned code is able to be run on the wii there is ALWAYS a threat to the developers property. I dont care if its in the form of an ISO loader or not. Ninty will NOT think homebrew is ok. Look at the gutar hero clone. Its homebrew, and its totally legit. YET I bet activision is counting the LOSS of sales of guitar hero because that peice of homebrew exists. They maybe did not steal GH, but they certainly lost 1 or 2 or 3 sales because of it. So it gives an unfair advantage to kids with programming skills. They dont pay for dev kits, they dont pay developer rights, they dont pay distributer fees, they dont even have to pay to set it up on wiiware. Sure they dont make money off it either, but the legit dev also does NOT make money off their investment. So essentially you are still stealing potential sales from them, which is lost revenue.
I think thats enough of a rant for me for now. I think this is certainly a step in the right direction, and puts us closer to what I would like to see availible on the wii.

I keep getting an error when it trys to create the ISO.
It works to SD but errors to USB.
Do I have to create a dir or something before?
What format does the USB stick have to be in? I got it at FAT32.
