Though mostly bugfixes dot the changes for Wii Web Server alpha version 0.73, homebrew developers Cboomf and Felix 123 attempted to make the server software less vulnerable to exploits. And you'll need it, for with alpha v0.73 you'll also get added file support for binary files.

Unless you're running the Nintendo Wii as a full-on, public Web server, this may be one little concern to you. But some malware programs running on your LAN could cause the software to crash, and therefore, stall the Wii. Sometimes, you'd be lucky if the bug only stalled the machine.

Just to be safe, update to the latest build and gain some new support for the HEAD method for HTTP, plus the ability to load HTML pages with spaces in their filenames. Other changes include:
  • Security bugfixes
  • Fixed disallowance of ../ or ./ for security
  • Server sends server version in header
As with previous versions of Wii Web Server, you can execute the software via the Homebrew Channel (your best bet), or with a homebrew launcher, if your technical prowess is up for it. Feel free to probe the Wii Web Server for other potential security holes, but take note that additions will come when they're ready.
