Wii wants to beat PS2 install base with secret weapon |
Ó
Ohhh, it's on. Speaking to investors, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata
threw down the gauntlet saying that his goal is to see the Wii's
install base exceed the PlayStation 2's.Very ambitious, considering the PS2's worldwide install base is currently at 124 million units, while the Wii is at 45.5 million, according to VGChartz.
Then again, it's not impossible. Numbers from the NPD group from last month showed that the Wii had better sales during its first 26 months than the PlayStation 2 did.
So how exactly do they plan to catch up to the PS2? A secret weapon, apparently. With software that they will unveil at this year's E3:
Wii still has much more room for expansion. We can expect more sales of software in the next fiscal year than in the current year. With what kind of software is Nintendo going to achieve this goal? Well, it will be shown at E3 to be held in the U.S. this June.
Sounds like E3 is actually something to look forward to this year. And it looks like Nintendo will finally come out of its shell. They've been pretty quiet the last few months.

Hopefully this piece of software they're going to release won't break Homebrew on Wii
Must be Nintendogs for wii or some other stupid casual game
I dont see this happening... ever.
Which console is better is up to opinion, but I don't think it would happen....especially just not from a 1 time secret weapon like deal.
Unless they gave them out for free, but I will grow another nose before that happens. =D
so what Runescape wants to beat WoW but that will never happen!
is what they are offering this year's E3
Wii playing Dreamcast games directly in the Wii disc channel !
And in progressive scan mode ( where VGA box was original supported ).
That's a hell of a dream !
But I think it will be some innovative family oriented game like Wii Sport or Wii fit.....unfortunately.
DVD playback?
hahah...
With Sega's involvement with Ninty recently, that just might be possible. I don't know what it would take to make it happen, but wouldn't that be cool?
Then they could re-release all those DC games!
Heck, maybe even update some.
Here is my personal Hope List (in no particular order):
1- Hard Drive (not software, I know, but it needs to be done)
2- DVD Playback
3- CD Playback
4- USB drive support (more feasable than a hard drive I guess)
5- New Zelda/Mario title
http://theultimatewiiguide.com/blog/dvd-playback-on-wii-through-homebrew
Its already possible through homebrew.
Besides, there was never any reason to make more than about 3 Wii's for the world. Once one family has it for a few days and gets tired of bowling, they can give it to a new family that isn't going to let it collect dust for the rest of its existance. I don't know anyone (including myself) who still plays their wii. They're like napkins and should have been made disposable.
I still play my Wii. I think it's fun. I have a PS3, a 360, and Wii, and even though I only play the VC on the Wii, it's still fun. Since the Wii is ahead of the game this time, apparently some people are still playing it. I'm sick of people bashing the systems. So what if it's the weakest console? The Playstation 3 is the most powerful, and yet look how behind it is (great system though!).
the wii is a nice system for some but its rubbish in the eyes of the previous fans who are hardcore gamers.well i cant speak for everyone so i must say in my opinion, the wii is rubbish. i'm not a bragger or anything but i would like to know my favourite console is powerful and have the latest cutting edge technology and to be able to play next gen games with high production value.
i think the ps2 has sold around 140million to date and the wii has sold 1/3 of that so far. do nintendo think that the previous fans of the nintendo will come back to them to buy all the oldies like mario, zelda, kid icarus and others. i'm quite sure the ps2 will sell at least 14million more consoles before the end of its life cycle. the wii is good but most of its audience are casual gamers and i dont see them purchasing their games or at least by the millions.
the wii might outsell the ps2 though but i think sales might start slowing down more drastically than they are right now. the wii's sales as slow down a bit but it still might catch up the ps2.
a lot of you guys are straight up haters. the wii is performing better than the ps2 did. common sense tells you it has pretty damn good chance of doing so.
The PS2 has thousands of GOOD games.
The Wii has whatever crap that low budget studios release for it. IGN reports 25% of Wii games scored less than a 4.0.
Even with newer low budget PS2 games coming out, the PS2 will ever exceed the Wii's CRAP SOFTWARE RATIO, which is the highest of any system ever.
HAHA~~! MCS, You definitely are exaggerating a bit there. The PS2 in no way has THOUSANDS of good games. Maybe somewhere in the hundred range, and that's being NICE.
Other than your usual trolling, you actually are right in that the Wii does have a lot of shovelware titles lately. And it's frustrating because these usually sell for $30-40 when they're not even worth 2 pennies. Piece of ***** software made by piece of ***** companies are the bane of the industry.
Don't support crap games, or the industry will keep suffering like it is.
