Wii Steering Wheel Attachment To Become A Disappointment?

Wii Wheel

At first, the thought of receiving interesting Wiimote attachments with every odd game might sound really cool. But after reading the IGN interview where associate producer Tats Myoio answered users' questions about GT Pro, We're not so sure anymore if it's as useful as Ubisoft wants us to believe.

According to the interview, the wheel attachment does not provide any additional functions itself - it's only there to hold the Wiimote in place, and to provide players with a wheel-like grip when playing GT Pro or any other racing game that supports the same control scheme. No stand, no pedals, nothing more.

The interview states the the wheel will be "compatible" with a multitude of other racing games coming to the Wii. But technically, you could play Super Mario Galaxy, or Red Steel while having the wheel attached - granted, it won't be comfortable, but it would make no difference in the game when there's no electronics inside.

Of course, the wheel doesn't take away from the quality of the game itself, and if it's just a cheap gimmick we don't pay extra for, then fine.

But why, then, is Ubisoft trying to make the Wheel attachment appear as something special, when it really seems to be nothing more than a bent piece of plastic? Myoio says the wheel's "made by Thrustmaster specifically designed for this game", like it's going to be a prestigious, sturdy piece of hardware. So is it? We'll have to wait and see...and hope that other publishers won't follow suit by including superfluous, crummy Wiimote attachments in their games.

Are you guys going to try to tell me that the light-(shot)gun isn't cool? Although it, as well as the steering wheel will not add any more functions as they are just shells to hold your current controller (really, the light-gun is as pointless as the wheel if you use your argument as you can just easily hold the wiimote horizontally towards the screen and the nunchucku in your left hand), they add that definite cool-factor that's not possible on any other console. Also, if they did have extra functions then you would be paying a lot more for them.

Since they're basic plastic shells at heart, they should only cost you a fraction of the game's price.

Personally I really like to drive car games with a wheel. Ok this one is not comparable to a normal force feedback wheel+pedals in any way, but I'm sure I will enjoy it more than using just the controller.

For once I am upset with something the QJ editors have said. I mean, come on, stop complaining. It comes FREE with two of their games. Even if it is just a 'bent piece of plastic' it's something YOU didn't have to make yourself.

And like #3 said, we like to hold an actual steering wheel so don't trip that it's lacking pedals and crap, you don't need that with the Wiimote. Just have fun playing with it.

And FYI, you couldn't play Mario Galaxy or Red Steel with it. They require the nunchuck attached at the back, you can't do that with the steering wheel attached.

Not just a peice of plastic. This thin has got to have buttons on it for gassing and breaking.

It doesn't need to have anything on it Hunter, it's a shell. You place the wiimote inside of it and use the wiimotes buttons. It's just a plastic shell with padding-grips on the sides.

That's what I thought it was origionally, and as long as the price matches, this will probably be more comfortable for people playing racing games (I don't)

Wow this is the worst article I have seen on QJ so far. Don't you get it? That is what is so good about the Wii, atachments can easily be done cheaply thus allowing for a new experience without having to pay 80$ more.

Personally I think playing with the wheel shell will be much more fun than holding that small controller with my huge hands on the side.

# Attachments for the WiiVietone 2006-09-10 10:16
I find that this will play of better then people expect.

Golf anyone? Perhaps they will make a $20 accessory that has the Wii-mote attached to a golf-club like pice of plastic.

Same to be said about every sport, any sport item could be used for the wii-mote to attach to. I for one would like to carry a mock up tennis racket then a plain remote.

Remember the Onimusha game for the PS2 that had the $150 controller? Well that was cool and all but think of it, if they ever make it for the Wii, all they would need is to make a mock up that the wii-mote can attach to and boom, its a samurai sword.

This is a great idea.

# I have to agree VietoneGuest 2006-09-11 02:33
Although that controller really added nothing to Onimusha. I'm a big fan of the katana and if that means a shell like Katana Handle (Tsuka) as the wiimote and Nunchuck wakazshi. I wouldn't care. For that feeling of slash and stabing it would be kinda cool. Shells are good idea as long as they come with the game with no or little extra pay. But better if we could squeeze some extra functionality as a add on.
