The Nintendo Wii

With the launch of the Nintendo Wii coming up, the rumor mill has worked overtime to flood gamers with rumored games and events. Here's a roundup of what's to be dismissed and what's to be believed. Gamers be aware though: nothing is ever final in the videogame industry, and what may be true today may already be false tomorrow. With that little disclaimer out of the way, let's get this thing rolling.

Crash Bandicoot coming to the Wii

Yesterday we reported that Crash Bandicoot will be coming to the Wii. We were wrong. This rumor apparently started during a question-and-answer session at a Vivendi-held European games summit. When asked what their plans were for next generation development, a Vivendi representative replied loosely that they were looking into all consoles. IGN has contacted Vivendi regarding this rumor and a Vivendi spokesperson flatly denied it, calling the rumor "rubbish".

So this one crashes and burns. Apologies for the mistake.

Excite Truck slated for a Wii launch later this year

This one is apparently true, although Excite Truck has never been officially confirmed as a launch title by Nintendo. A two-level demo of the game was one of the most advanced ones at the Wii booth during E3 2006 last May. It seems that developer Monster Games is further along with the development than Nintendo has made public. So hopefully Excite Truck will be one of the first games we can play on the Wii.

Naruto to Wii

The Naruto: Clash of Ninja 3D fighting games for the GameCube has been pretty successful both in Japan and America. The first game in the series debuted stateside earlier this year, with the second one on the way. In Japan, however, there are already two additional Naruto fighting games available. Sources indicate that these titles are much more likely to be re-tooled and optimized for the Wii before they make their US debut.

Playable Wii games at the Leipzig Games Convention

The Leipzig Games Convention kicks off this August and there are already a couple of publishers who are planning to show off their Wii games in playable form. And -- get this -- one or most of the games have never been shown in playable form before. At the very least, the convention would seem to be showcasing a bigger Wii presence than previously suspected.

20 to 30 Virtual Console games for system launch

A lot of people (us included) have been wondering exactly how many Virtual Console games might be available for download. According to insiders, Nintendo and its officially announced partners are all working hard to churn out somewhere between 20 and 30 classics. The games will supposedly include some big hits from the NES, SNES, TurboGrafx 16, and SEGA Genesis platforms. No news yet if other publishers will have Virtual Console games ready for the Wii launch later this year. It's also unknown for now if Nintendo or third parties will choose to showcase their original Virtual Console efforts at the launch. Hey, with this, maybe we can hear "Rise from your graves" blasting out of the speakers again.

» turbografix 16 sucks?!

I'm not 100% sure which company held the awesome "Slaughterhouse" game, but i'm placing my bet on the TG16. That game rocked, and the graphics were noteworthy as well.

Oh man, I was hoping the N64 stuff would be one of the first things they set up on the virtual console.

I hope they get Sega CD games. I've never played those games, but that would be awesome.
