Wii releases from prominent publishers selling poorly at day one

Chocobo Mysterious Dungeon: Labyrinth of Forgotten Time - Image 1The white hot Nintendo Wii may be selling like hotcakes, but games made for the console don't come close. Or at least, recent first day sales numbers show even high profile titles like Square Enix' Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon: Labyrinth of Forgotten Time and Sega's NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams don't experience stellar launch days.

Here are some of recently released games and copies sold at launch from sinobi's blog via Cubed3:
  • Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon: Labyrinth of Forgotten Time (Wii, Square Enix) - 30,000 (30% sell through of initial stock)
  • NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams (Wii, Sega) - 7,000 (10% sell through)
  • Soul Calibur Legends (Wii, Bandai Namco) - 5,000 (10% sell through)
  • We Love Golf (Wii, Capcom) - 4,000 (10% sell through)
  • Shikigami no Shiro III (Wii, Arc System Works) - 500
For a game closely knit to the popular Final Fantasy franchise, the dungeon crawler Chocobo's Dungeon: Labyrinth of Forgotten Time getting 30,000 copies off shelves at launch in Japan doesn't sound too good. Sega's revival of a classic, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, also performed poorly on day one despite being sought after by its fans.

Aside from the two highly anticipated releases, other Wii titles also weren't able to have spectacular launches to speak of. Even Grasshopper Manufacture's No More Heroes didn't receive much attention from the Japanese audience, and Suda51's presence couldn't make customers come when the game launched.

According to previous reports, Japanese developers are starting to worry about profitability of developing games for the Wii. While first party titles are often successful on Nintendo's console, most third party entries are hit or miss. Looks like time will tell if sales will pickup for these recent releases, or end up short of selling through.

Interesting.

The Wii is very Popular because of its new way to Play Games and because of that, do atract new Gamers and Buyers. This New Gamers are not familiarised with all the Cool Publishers out there, they probably only know Wii Sports and Mario and just get in touch with some Advertisament to know what maybe to buy next.

or maybe

they just wanted to play wii sport(me), cuz it's the BEST game the wii has and doesn't waste the motion sensor. Also it's free.

how sad is that?

Wii sports is the best game? A series of tech demos Nintendo recycled to add value to an overpriced system? This is the beginning of the end for the Wii. Without profitability and few decent titles in the first place, few developers will take the increasing risk of making quality Wii games. As much as people don't like my predictions, you cannot deny this is very bad news for the Wii.

There is a difference...

Just because a game comes from a prominent publisher doesn't mean that it's good though. Look at Soul Caliber Legends for example. They definitely didn't put as much effort into it as they do with the main franchise. I can't really speak for any of the other games since they have yet to be released in the U.S. (Nights will be here tomorrow). I'm personally looking forward to No More Heroes though.

MCS

you have a very good point which is what i have been trying to get across for some time now. its been a while since you trolled the ps3 board and most of your post have matched your name. maybe not the chocobo game but NMH looked to be a good game yet bombed on a console with such a large user base. even if they advertise and make an incredible game it still wont catch that much attention since, like MCS said, most wii owners only bought it for wii sports and dont actually play games. nintendo passed the gamecube in sales but they still aren't doing it right. time will tell though. maybe something great will come out but until then, this race goes out to the 360 and ps3. @demondirk- your trolling needs more work 2/10

...

and you are a blind Nintendo fanboy that refuses to see the truth for the third time in a row. im not a sony fanboy. i own a ps3 yes, but i will consider a 360 once they fix the RRoD. 33% is a bit much for me. i wont a DS an SP and a PSP. i don't however plan on buying a wii. its mostly a gimmick in a box. when a consoles greatest selling point is a mini game i tend to shy away from it. there are a lot of casual gamers with opinions to match. just because 16 million people tell you something is great doesn't make it great. past brawl and maybe Mario kart there isn't much left to look forward to on the wii unless you count wii sports (another fantastic mini game). devs actually put a good amount of work into no more heroes and we see what happened to that. low sales on a console with a low market share are to be expected but when you have a record breaking console, games (by third party developers) should be able to sell well. that is, of course, if your user base actually plays games and didn't just buy it to play the cute mini game. but, Nintendo doesn't care. they have been in business for over 100 years and im guessing they know what they are doing by now. they sold the console at a profit and their games are the only ones that sell on it. as far as they are concerned the console is a success. in a years time we will see who was right. but until then i would like to point out that: you have given nothing of value to this discussion but mud slinging and also it is spelled "you're" ie. you are. your shows ownership, you're is a contraction of you are. learn the difference then come back and try to call me a Sony fanboy for no apparent reason.

pssh

I still don't understand how NMH is a flop. It hasn't even been out for a month, and hasn't even went stateside yet...... It's so annoying when all these websites, game lovers/haters say that a game is a flop if it doesn't sell 1 million copies the first day of release......

hey MCS

If you read correctly, "BEST game the wii has" does that look like a great comment to you? and no, you are only half correct though. It will not be the end for wii, but it will start to fall with the current list of games I'm seeing. Another factor is probably because more games are being developed for ps3 as well as additional games to xbox360. (I got wii and ps3). If you%u2019re going to say anything about my post, please make sure you understand and read it correctly before you make stupid judgments
