Wii Region-Coding Clarification

GlobeThe first thing we heard about region-coding was from Nintendo of America. The answer? No region-coding for the Wii or first party games! Then, almost as soon as we heard that, there was a report from Nintendo UK that there would be region-coding and that all games would be region-specific.

Earlier today, GameSpot reported that the Wii would be region-free! Again, gamers excited about Ninty's console rejoiced. However, just like last time, it's now confirmed that the Wii will NOT be region-free and that all first-party games will be region-locked. Boo. With the Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation Portable being region-free, we were hoping for the Wii to be region-free too! I wonder how Virtual Console games will work?

Americas and Japan can be region-free, while Europe can be region-locked ^_^. Since everybody in USA is saying that our Wii will be region-free and people in Europe are saying the Wii isn't region-free.... They're both right!

you say "I wonder how Virtual Console games will work?" am i correct in thinking that the virtual console games are downloadable and that region coding is only on the disk so there will be no problame with regards to the virtual console?

sorry if i am wrong!

Obviously you don't have much experience with your Xbox 360. The decision to region-lock a game rests with the publisher. There are many games that are region-free on the Xbox 360. You might want to look into things before calling someone a "noob" or using profanity.

If Nintendo wants to region-lock their console from playing games outside the region, there's nothing stopping them from allowing us to download Japanese-specific games. Hopefully they don't do that as there's no financial sense in doing so =)

With all this "its region-free, no its not" thing, I think we'll only know on launch

Until Perrin Kaplan or David Yarnton retracts his or her respective claim, we have no confirmation one way or the other. I wish one of them would come forward and admit he/she was wrong.

What you're saying is that a console is dubbed "region-free" if a developer chooses to, or by mistake doesn't encode their game to be region specific? I think that's incredibly innacurate. The Nintendo DS is region free, or to clarify, any game that has been made, or will ever be made will work on every system in the world. That's region free.

It's only with "illegal" modifications that you can play games region free. I'm 100% sure something will come out to let you play Wii games region free.

#7, my source? You know each post that isn't a press release or editorial has a "Via [Source]" link right? My source is Go Nintendo's NOA rep, Allison.

#10, no, I say that a console is region-free if the hardware manufacturer does not build in any region-lock. If the publisher makes it impossible to play on a different region's console, that's something the hardware manufacturer can't stop.

#11, the PSP is region-free for games. Only UMD movies are region-locked.
