Wii React, As In "We The Gamers"

And all at once there came a mighty rumbling, and the net did shake, and unto thee did Wii reveal ourselves to the world.

Ok, Ok. So we've all had our fun at the expense of Nintendo and it's been a few days since Ninty first pulled the old switcheroo on us. Gone was the Revolution we had all come to know and love, and at the dinner table appeared the newly christened "Wii", to a stunned silence.

Since then the jokes and derision have come thick and fast (amidst one or two positive and even a few insightful comments). Now for your enjoyment we've scoured the length, breadth and hepth of the interweb and brought you the ones that seem to  best sum up gamer's current sentiment. Enjoy!

Please tell me you don't pronounce that "wee"? - Thraktor (The Gaming Age Forums)

God i love this industry. - Scrow (The Gaming Age Forums)

...and Nintendo went Wii, Wii, Wii all the way home. - Baron Aloha (The Gaming Age Forums)

I don't get it. Months of positive hype, a genuine competitive advantage, and they named the thing wii? If consumers don't even want to say the name of a product, they're not going to buy it. - Speevy (The Gaming Age Forums)

Having a product name that can't be deterministically pronounced is ALWAYS a bad idea. I wonder if they're going to call the remotes "I"s. I'd love to see people instruct how to play games. "Well you take your i and then i wiggle my i, no, not my eye, the controller..."

God, I feel like writing a "who's on first" script for it. - Juice (The Gaming Age Forums)

We can't call it a Revmote now. It will now be a Wemote Contwol. - AdmiralViscen (The Gaming Age Forums)

Super Mario ThWii has already been taken. - DefectiveReject (The Gaming Age Forums)

Actually, the full name of the system is the "WiiNES." - Synthesizer Patel (The Gaming Age Forums)

This is the Last Test for the Nintendo Rapture. If you can force yourself to say that you like this name, you may ascend to the Mushroom Kingdom and sit at the right hand of Miyamoto.

Rejoice!

Believe! - krypt0nian (The Gaming Age Forums)

I like what Nintendo is trying to do here. I like the concept. It'll do huuuge in Japan, and American's will scoff and scoff.... like I did .... till they realize that a Revolution By Any Other Name Plays Just As Great - John Harker (The Gaming Age Forums)

BTW, since my mother language is not english, can anyone tell me the connotations that make Wii so stupid for you? I´m a bit puzzled. Thanks in advance. - nine words (The Gaming Age Forums)

You know, Nintendo is lucky they've got so many franchises or I just wouldn't bother putting up with the odd looks and having to explain the name. 3D Mario, Zelda, and Metroid are completely skippable to me and inferior to their 2D counterparts, but they're still going to suck me in with SSB, Pokemon, and the blasted virtual console and its TG-16 vertical shooters and such.

Sigh. Maybe I'll just order off the Internet or something. - Jiggy37 (The Gaming Age Forums)

So with the name outta the way, does that mean that the release date comes at E3? or the price? or both? What's so bad about the name? Like PS3 is very original in the first place. X-box 360 is a very original name too. - kelekod (Joystiq)

"Wanna play with my Wii?"
"It is VERY motion sensitive"
"My Wii's controller is about 6 inches long, and quite responsive to touch" - Jonathan (Joystiq)

Wii are Nintendo. Your gameological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is futile. - Paul (Joystiq)

When the iPod was announced did you all think apple released a giant whale egg? The name is simple, the name stands out, and the name doesn't matter the games do. "Wii" seems to summarize Nintendo's next-gen strategy quite well, and the name is iconic like the "iPod" is today. It's universal because it's not entirely a word - it's a picture/word. Never thought there could be a combination of that before - I mean in the English language. - Vik (Joystiq)

I get it. It took me a few minutes but I think Nintendo wants to reinvent their console by not even associating it gaming consoles or typical names. It's something completely different then what were use to as gamers but Wii doesn't sound any weirder for a console then iPod for an MP3 player. The hardest Hard Core gamers are going to hate it. - Princess Zelda (Joystiq)

Im not a fanboy to any company, but this truly is a bizarre name... it would not stop me buying a 'Wii' if I really wanted to, but I agree... the embarassment of telling someone you have a 'Wii' or you want a 'Wii' or asking for a 'Wii' game. - plastik (QJ.net)

At least they have the creativity to make a new name every once and awhile, unlike Sony and Microsoft who just throw a few numbers on the end of the name, change the colors of the controllers, and call it "the best new system". - NewNeighbor (QJ.net)

customer: Can I get Super Fario Bros for the Wii?
employee: I think you mean, "for us"
customer: What?
employee: You said "we," but the correct English would be "for us"
customer: ...
employee: Anyway, you wanted that for why (wrongly pronouncing Wii)?
customer: Uh...what? Now, you're using crappy English. I think you meant to say "for what system" Right?
employee: What?
customer: Yeah, for Wii
employee: For you?
customer: No, for Wii
employee: Why we and not just you?
customer: What?
employee: Get the hell out of this store!!! - Clueless (QJ.net)

Nintendo isn't going to go down the drain and completely fail just because of the console's name. If they do, then this world just isn't good enough for them. - Anonymous (QJ.net)

"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." - Reneid Klein, via Shakespeare (QJ.net)

Why is this news on a PSP site?
It doesn't make any sense. - dfsdfsd (QJ.net)

Wii dont like it - meh (QJ.net)

So there you have it, that's what we as gamers (well most of us) think of Nintendo's bonkers moniker - it stinks. Many however are quick to point out (and I'm inclined to agree) that whatever the system might be called, they'll always have the games. This sentiment is perhaps most eloquently expressed in a quote from QJ.net reader Reneid Klein (via Shakespeare) "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet". Tell it like it is Willy.

One thing's for certain, Nintendo has your undivided attention right now, and for better or worse you'll probably never forget the name Wii.

Sure hope so. A part of me is saying that people always get used to weird names, especially if the product is successful. On the other hand that really is an unforunate choice.

If it's really very innovative and new, the name could fit. But if it's not that good, and not new at all, they've made a mistake. Time will tell.

Right now it's just weird. Not awkward, just weird.

all these people are stupid who are making up a situation of someon buying a Wii Obviously... if you walk into an electronics department or eb games... and ask for a nintendo Wii or just a Wii they are gonna know what you are talking about. they arnt gonna point you in the direction of the toilet T_T

People dont liek change... and thats what nintendo is doing... chagning the gamming industry. And im sure that if you went to a store and asked for a Nintendo revolution or a Revolution they arnt gonna say "what the hell is that" just cause they changed the name doesnt mean you need to stop calling in the Revolution

Didn't Nintendo use different names in America and Japan, with the Super NES. Why can't it be like that? Also, I believe that Nintendo's online service should be called Nintendo Wii, that would make more sense. Well, Nintendo has always in the past messed something up, and this time we're lucky its just the name. Nintendo dont be like Apple's Ipod and come up with some funny simple name that makes even your fans mad. Wii want the Revolution back. Nintendo, remember it was the fans who made you choose Nintendo DS over Nintendo Nitro. It was Wii.

Noteveryone knew about Revolution, now because of thr name everyone knows Wii. i haden't heard a single thing on the news about Nintendo but that day after they announced it every channel, newpaper, and gaming site had something on it. That day in school I was approached by the most avid of Sony fanboys and Microsoft X-Bots, why, they wanted to know about the Wii, the name was so stupid they coulden't resist. Personally I hate the name too, dosen't change my buying it though. All in all the tactic worked, and we can complain all we want, it's just the name.

Also Ipods may not be my prefrence in portable media devices, but I still will admit that they sell extremely well, and to most people Mp3 player and Ipod are synonymous, Nintendo and Console have been synonymous for a long time, now it'll be changed to Wii.

# wii wii poo poocomedy 2006-04-29 14:34
i stand by my previous thoughts on the name wii, it's stupid.

why can't we hate it? sony is playign a safe game, and microsoft initially called their system 'xbox' and subsequently mananged to top that with xbox360, i mean they've NEVER named anything well. but wii?

i have to be reminded each time i look on the qj revolution site that it's in fact called wii, my brain will simply not remember that piece of information.

also, what if i go into a games store and need a wee? i could end up wetting myself... though i do think it would be funny. or what if a kid in a gameshop starts telling his mum he wants a wii/wee, either way it could get confusing!

imagine that:

game shop

kid: mummy, i want a wii!

mummy: ok, lets go then

mummy drags kid out of game shop

game shop

kid: mummy, i want a wee!

mummy: look, how many times have i told you i'm not getting you one, just find a game you want in the discount bin!

kid proceeds to urinate in the corner all over the xbox360, he is subsequently given a voucher for the shop and is hailed as a champion.

(that was a feeble poke at xbox360 by me)

You all need to get a grip. A name dosnt change the hardware, a name is just a badge of the front, nothing more. I mean, come on, one of the biggest names in gaming is "Playstation" - an AWFUL name. If anyone decides not to buy the console becuase of the name, they have some serious mental problems.

i like how qj.net have reacted... the blog is still about revolution, not wii... all the graphics etc haven't changed, if i was qj i would wait until e3 to be sure nintendo aren't pulling a fast one.

i know a name doesn't change to goddamn hardware, but i feel that it will change public perception - it implies wee, whether you like it or not. and that could (COULD) have a knock on effect and bring lower revenue to developers for ... wii... or nintendo themselves, and this could lead to a problem such as .... wii... losing the console battle and being dropped.

that's why i care, i know it relies on a stupidly tenuous chain of events but i am still concerned. i think the name wii is monumentally ill chosen.

Well after two days of whining about it, it seems like most people have finally accepted the name. Or at least more people have.

Sure, there will always be those that will be shallow enough to hate on the system solely because of the name, but at least others are starting to become more mature about it.

Nintendo knows what they're doing though. I'm sure they knew what kind of initial reaction the name would get. So I feel they either have faith that it will sink in by E3, or they feel that they'll be able to convince people that names aren't the main focus.

Then there's always the chance that they have more up their sleeves about the name (such as it being just for publicity and not the final name like some say) than they are letting on. Either way, we'll all find out at E3.

And wow, QJ actually used my quote in the list...twice, actually. Well...not really MY quote since Shakespeare wrote it, but you get what I mean.

Sure it's only a name and it doesn't change the console, but I'll be damned if this won't hurt the sales. I still really want one and I'll definitely buy it no matter what they call it, but... I know not everyone will be so nice about it. A huge part of the market is people who don't know about video games (why else would Spongebob games become Greatest Hits or whatever they call them). Which means that most of those people are going to turn down the Wii just because it sounds dumb. You may know you'll buy it, but you're crazy if you believe that there isn't anyone who will decide against it based on the name.

Why is everyone making it seem like going into a store would be so difficult.

Who the hell asks for a game and what system you want it for!?

You just point and say, "I want that one." You don't say you want it for the ANY system.

And even if you are just asking if they have it in stock, the clerk isn't going confront you about bad grammar. They will know what you are talking about if you say the Nintendo Wii. Your not going to ask for a Wii and even if you did they aren't going to lose on a sale by being immature. If you jagoffs can't figure that out, then you should keep your jaws at bay. Because your the one thats needs a helmet and a leash!

Modroneman, BEST POST EVER.

What game store doesn't have the boxes for the games on the wall? You just pick up the friggan game you want, hand it to the cashier, he scans it, you pay, DONE.

You're not going to sit up there for thirty minutes doing an impromptu 'Who's on first' skit when you try to buy one.

And here's a suggestion, something that came to mind the first friggan day they announced Wii was the name. I have yet to hear anyone call it this and have been waiting to see if they would, but just call it:

NINTENDO W

It's easy, sounds cool, and everyone knows what you're talking about. Everyone's happy. Fans can even be members of the NWO when they connect.

Nintendo

Wii

Online

That's another way of joining the prospect of 'Wii' with customers making it 'we' and joining the WiFi connection.

So if you're worried about calling it 'Nintendo Wii' just call it "Nintendo W".
