Wii problem: "the SD card simply doesn't register"

Wii= SD save support? The lucky guys over at Joystiq were able to test drive the Wii around a week before the unit's US launch. So they were having the time of their lives playing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, but when they started saving their game progress, they realized that the system won't recognize their SD cards.

According to Kyle Orland of Joystiq:

Our tests have shown that the SD card simply doesn't register on the memory management screen. We've tried this with a number of SD cards, both empty and full of data, and while picture viewing and MP3 playback worked fine, the system refused to recognize the card as a game save storage device.

Unfortunately, the console's manual says otherwise: "copy and delete data found on the Wii System Memory and SD cards." The official Wii website also says the unit will have an SD card slot for portable saves, and other Wii forums like WiiLoaded.com attest to that fact.

So, what went wrong? Well, since the Wii has not been launched yet, we do not know. Hopefully, Joystiq will get the answer from Nintendo when they finally get in touch with them.

» Question

Do I have to have an SD memory card to save games?

by cruz - 2006-11-13 07:18
» unm

it has a interna memory

by infinitysend - 2006-11-13 08:46
» that's crazy

If, by some chance, that you can only save your memory to "official" nintendo SD memory cards, that's f'n shady. I mean really REALLY shady. Even for Nintendo.

It's sick, even - partially disturbing. Forcing us to buy "official" Nintendo cards when I can go to any computer or camera store on the entire planet for cheap? Gimme a break. I really hope that we can use any SD card we want or I'm going to be really angry.

» quit complaining

who knows the possibilities and what could be going wrong...just because these guys can't figure it out doesn't mean that they are smart enough to work the peice of equipment...and even if you have to buy a memory card...so the hell what...

» gotta ask why?

Now you gotta ask yourself why would Nintendo go with an already well established medium (SD cards) then go through the trouble of making it proprietary again? They wouldn't that's why. Going with SD means they neither have to develop nor manufacture an item that brought them only marginal profits in the past. In this case the wheel was already invented and Nintendo in the business of developing new technologies. Now it's not impossible to think that they could get SD cards on the cheap in mass quantities and augment them so that only their cards would work but that would be a very slimy move. I'm sure it's a software issue as the prerelease units these testers received didn't have the final firmware update that comes packed in each Wii retail box. Lets all calm down and trust Nintendo knows what it's doing and will take care of it's fan base . . . loyal and newcomer alike.

» yeah

i dont think u have to buy the Ninty one....otherwise they wuld just call it a memory card, not a SD card

by CSFFlame - 2006-11-13 10:26
» I'm guessing here

I think they may have had to initialize the card. Although the PS2 can do that ingame.

We'll see, possibly in the form of a firmware update if they are using the golden version.

I saw a short video demonstrating the Wii and I am sure that you click on the Wi picture in the Dat Management Screen and it should be somewhere in there.

by CSFFlame - 2006-11-13 10:30
» no

At worst it'd just be initialization. The put formatted cards in already.

by Gamespot fan - 2006-11-13 12:18
» it worked

it worked perfectly fine for gamespot they used there regular sd card and it worked fine

by ssj3fox - 2006-11-13 13:12
» Yea

Format was not the write word to use. Initialize is a much better way to put it.

by shadowcrasuant - 2006-11-14 00:14
» what?

well they said they tried everything. maybe they did try to format. duh!!!! they are the experts.

by shadowcrasuant - 2006-11-14 00:17
» what?

hmmm.nintendo is already selling the system

cheap. What makes you think the SD cards wont be? I wonder if sony fans complain like a little baby.

» updates needed

the wii probably needs to be updated as their servers arent up yet its impossible to update via internet. nintendo already said off party sd cards will work.

by Caboose - 2006-11-20 06:28
» It's all in the firmware

It's a firmware update. Calm down! My goodness! The firmware update also allows you to set how long you want the disc illumination to stay on. Calm down!
