Wii Photo Channel to get updates - Image 1Nintendo has announced that updates will be made to the Wii Photo Channel this coming December. These will give the Wii the ability to create a personalized icon from one of your favorite digital pictures, and the replacement of MP3 support with AAC file support.

Here's what Nintendo had to say about the upcoming changes, along with some notes for those interested in buying a Wii:
  1. Personalize your Wii Menu by making one of your favorite digital images from an SD memory card as the Photo Channel icon.
  2. The Wii console will replace MP3 compatibility with the ability to play AAC files, which provide a greater sound quality than an MP3 of the same size. This new compatibility will work with MP4 audio files in the .m4a format. Additionally, you can now choose to have the songs play back in a random order.
  • Wii consoles sold in retail stores starting in December 2007 should include AAC file support.
  • For Wii Console owners without the AAC file compatibility, you can download the updated version of the Photo Channel from the Wii Shop Channel starting in early December 2007. Please note that once you download the updated Photo Channel (ver 1.1), you will no longer be able to play MP3 format music files.
  • Additionally, consumers who purchase a Wii console with the updated Photo Channel (ver. 1.1) already installed will not be able to install the previous version to support MP3 playback.

» ..Wait.

So.. Why are they dropping Mp3 support?... Why not just add AAC support...

Wow a personalized photo icon! Nintendo sure is leading in innovation! They're sales success sure has made them lazy as hell. They're not even trying.

Replacing .mp3 with AAC, stupid Nintendo. Why are they worried about sound quality? The Wii has by far the worst, most obsolete sound capabilities of any system! That's even dumber than not having the Wii support Dolby Digital, or not including a DVD player like the other last gen or current next gen consoles do.

This is total crap, I will not download the new update. There is no way in hell I am going to re-encode my songs to the lame ass AAC format.

But *****ing about lack of a DVD player is old already.

yeah, this seems like a dumb move. Add AAC support - fine. Replacing MP3 support all together - suck.

I don't use the photo channel much anyway, but my parents use it on theirs' to create slideshows and such. I already had to try and explain how to rip their CDs to MP3...can you imagine if I have to go back and try and explain how to re-encode them to AAC? *shudder*

Set up a batch script in Audacity or Goldwave to do it, I guess. It is a pain though, you're right about that.
