Wii online gaming: No unified gamertags? |
Ó
Several hours ago, GameSpy has announced that in line with their partnership with Nintendo, they would be providing game developers for the Nintendo Wii with their online gaming services. This was welcome news during the report, and Falafelkid from Nintendo Revolution blogs just got off the horn with GameSpy for new details regarding the new Wii online service. As the company said to Falafelkid during the inquiry:GameSpy's technology does allow for features that could span multiple games. With the Nintendo Wii, however, the multiplayer features are title-specific.
GameSpy further said that the aside from multiplayer gaming, each game's friend's list would also be title-specific, which basically means that (as Falafel kid has put it) "If I have a friend roster in one game, that roster will not be available to me in any other game. I have to build up an entirely new list for each title". This announcement also applies to Pokemon: Battle Revolution, which will be the first to make use of the Wii's WiFi technology.
Considering that the Wii already has an established online community by way of the Miis, the decision to make friends lists game-specific is coming off as rather strange. Just keep in touch in case we pick up more details on this new detail.

So nintendo is different, we all know that, and yes it is a shame you can't just add anyone you want onto a friends list, but get used to it people, no ammount of moaning will change it, just have fun with it, when you start playing games like smash bros online, you won't care

And I am sure that with the next consoles, Nintendo will include Hi-def as prices would have gone down alot (don't forget it was nearly included this time), Sony and Microsoft will also probably include motion sensor gaming as well (sony will of course improve the ***** shking controller that you can only shake), as the wii is such a success, only time will tell. In the mean time, enjoy the wii and the work that Nintendo are doing to get the gaming industry out of the black hole it%u2019s put itself in. The hole that actually came about because of companies going for better graphics and bigger controllers and rising costs.

I'm sure the Wii has an API for accessing the address book to find friends wiis. Why they haven't gotten their crap in gear by using that eludes me unless they have no idea what they're doing. Given the track record of the company before, it's most likely due to the fact that they cannot easilly establish who is playing the console and therefor cannot accurately calculate possible ad revenue from loading screens and such. Very likely there will be some process by which people have to "log in" to gamespy.
