Wii on the PS3? O Wiily?

A few days ago, Jurai dropped a gift on the PS3 Linux forums: the AdvanceMame .106 PS3 Binary. Basically the building blocks for MAME emulation on the PS3. And it's hot. People are obviously looking into the variety of things they can get their PS3 to run. I mean just look at YouTube.

See? Apparently the launch titles aren't enough to sate the more technical of PS3 owners.

Then just recently we find this questionable video of someone allegedly figuring out a way to get the Wii to run burnt DVD-R copies of games. If that's true (doubtful), then that means that people have either figured out the inner workings of the code behind Wii games, or they've found a way to get past Wii's copy security.

Let's assume that some time in the near future people have figured out how Wii games work. I mean they all eventually do anyway. Given enough time and motivation, coders come up with emulations for anything (or workarounds for anything).

Now it's time for us to ask you guys a (not so) stupid question. What would happen if people come up with a Wii emulator that runs on linux? Wii games on your PS3? Why not, they've already allegedly managed to get their PC to "see" a Wiimote. Yes, we know, there isn't even a decent emulator for the previous generation of consoles, but still, things are possible.

Wiimulator?

Some of you guys are thinking about it already. What do the rest of you have to say? One thing's for sure though, you won't be able to use the archival purposes excuse on this one.

Now

Just get Zelda working.

by - 2006-11-26 07:11:29
Yeah

if we could actually play wii on ps3 then nintendo wil feel pretty f*cked up.

by - 2006-11-26 07:17:38
can't be real

I smell bullsh*t

by - 2006-11-26 07:31:03
bullll

yeh i smell some bull ***** asswell, although ps3 did say there new console would support homebrew... possible i dunno.. but a week after launch and someone emulating the wii in a week.. IMPOSSIBLE

by - 2006-11-26 07:33:18
Pointless...

And how exactly do you expect the Wiimote to work? Or the nunchuck? Its like trying to emulate a DS on a PC, pretty pointless...

by - 2006-11-26 07:33:22
It is

Possiable. I hope it is since I have a PS3 and no Wii at the momment...

by - 2006-11-26 07:51:07
pointless but the ds...

well the touch screen did word with mouse in emulation, but i dont see the sixaxes work like a Wii-mote/nunchuck.

reading

how about reading the article ? 'Why not, they've already allegedly managed to get their PC to "see" a Wiimote. ' Well then, if this would be posible with a piece of USB hardware, it could easily be done on a ps3 running linux really...

wii-mote

The wii-mote on the pc is just a rumor, no video nothing backing it up. Wii-mote on PS3? Really doubt it. Or to quote a post earlier: "if we could actually play wii on ps3 then nintendo wil feel pretty f*cked up" but not with it costing Sony over a grand to build a PS3, they are actually loosing money while nintendo is making money. PS3 sounds alot like the Sega Saturn.

wii emulation is almost completly impossible

but the last gen should be emulated now. I mean, if I can play GC/Xbox/PS2 games on my ps3 using fedora or even without booting linux 1st :|, that would be soooo coool!. I mean, you start ur ps3, and run Fable, then, after 5 hours you finish it and start RE4, and after a while you play a bit of FFXII, and all of that are ISO on your HD, or burned DVD :D that would be soooo cool, oH, and also a PSP emulator would be really cool, same for DS ( play with keyboard and mouse ) :D ( FFIII ) oh, and for the great guys and girls who can code, could you try to make a "imgBurn" linux program so we could make a compressed DVD ISO of our BD movies?

by - 2006-11-26 09:04:41
^^^

Why would nintendo be making money? Remember emulators use isos and those you dont have to buy.

by - 2006-11-26 10:02:03
Well, technically speaking

Both the Wii and PS3 use PPC Cores. Who's to say the Wii channels would work on the PS3?

by theTick197 - 2006-11-26 12:17:55
I highly doubt this

A wii emulator on Linux is one thing, but a wii emulator on a PS3? Not happening. The PS3 does not have near enough RAM or video card (video card in Linux that is) to emulate a Wii.

by - 2006-11-26 13:19:52
PS3 sucks, hope they get sued

Yea, if PS3 could emulate Wii games then the PS3 would finally have some good games on it! HA!!

by theTick197 - 2006-11-26 13:31:32
....

You are a complete moron, Sony could never be sued for what you can do in Fedora. That would be like suing HP for a person who is running Linux on their HP computer, and that particular computer is being used to pirate games. Besides emumulation is 100% legal if you own what you are emulating.

by - 2006-11-26 17:15:42
wow

Now I don't get it. Playstation loyalists instead of making your ps3 play Wii games. Which sounds like you want to play the games. Just get yourself a Wii it's cheaper and runs the games smoother for it was desingned for it ^^.

In time...

It'll be a few years before the Wii will be emulated on the PS3, even if the Wii's code is similar to the GameCube's emulation code. The main reason is because Nintendo would sue the ass off of whomever made the code. But atleast it would be one lawsuit that couldn't touch Sony.

by - 2006-11-26 18:35:56
You idoit

Nintendo can't sue anyone for making emulators. EMULATORS ARE 100% LEGAL. Running commercial games that YOU DO NOT OWN is illegal, but how the hell would they find out if you owned it or not anyway.

by - 2006-11-26 18:37:58
PS3 will get sued eventually

you honestly dont think MS and Nintendo would sue Sony if its CONSOLE played their CONSOLES games? you sir, are the complete moron. I guess thats why Napster didnt get sued huh, cuz I mean, every song everyone downloaded they owned it before they downloaded it right? dumbass...

by theTick197 - 2006-11-26 19:39:18
Sony cannot be sued

if any one is to be sued over a wii emulator than it will be the Linux comunity. It wouldnt be sony approved code running on the console itself like normal games, it would be a homebrew Linux app that would be able to run on any computer. And emulators can be run inside of other operating systems too, like Windows. Then it would also make sense for nintendo to sue Microsoft. and you say I am the dumbass.

by - 2006-11-26 19:47:45
Bah.

Everyone needs to just STFU about piracy. NO ONE CARES. If people pirate games, it doesn't matter when you get right down to it. It doesn't really hurt the industry, IMO. It's time to just shut up about piracy.

by - 2006-11-26 20:39:29
Sony couldn't be sued except

if the problem is addressed by Nintendo/Microsoft. They are required to stop the crimes from happening, allowing a crime to happen is still a crime. Sony wouldn't get sued, they'd just have to stop it. Be it firmware upgrades or banning homebrew altogether. No fuss made over the PSP cause Sony was actively stopping it. And more so cause it was their own games.

I got my ps3 from an online shopping site, no problems at all.

I bought my Playstation 3 console from Games-Asia.com It was the best price I found it for on the net. When I got it my eyes lit up like a blue sky, it goes like a Porsche. These might be helpful. http://www.games-asia.com/newsdesk_info.php/newsdesk_id/17?games-asia=5f5c7bdc4b30262efaa9bb12cbec5b05 http://www.games-asia.com/playstation3with20gbharddrive-p-1201.html and if you want the big one 60 gigs worth http://www.games-asia.com/playstation3with60gbharddrive-p-1347.html John

by - 2006-11-27 01:35:24
Dude those prices suck

Almost every online retailer has cheaper prices than that site and you bought from them. Way to go on your fail.

by - 2006-11-27 05:09:17
there is a possibility

A emulater made to run direct on ps3 or linux on ps3 is possible I know video ram is higher for the Wii but if you programmed the emulater (on either XMB or linux) to find a Wii-mote then emulation is possible you just have to buy a Wii-mote and the games that might even make it legal but the Wii-mulater MUST use the Wii-mote to play the games even to half the extent of the Wii's capabilities. The emulater wouldn't even be playable unless it played at full compacity or motion-sensing would be back-logged, so a lagging emulater is out of the question.

by theTick197 - 2006-11-28 20:56:33
well no one will be sued

I was only making a hypothetical situation,no one will be sued because emulation is not illegal. Plus there has to be an emulator, just because a computer can see a wii mote doesnt mean there will be an emulator for it on the ps3.

by - 2006-12-26 06:04:15
ps3 is never gona emulate wii

basicly ps3 is a computer!!!!!!!! wii is a computer!!!!!! i know i bild them and code s**t. harware is not good enoff. period!!!!!!!!! the games are ment to run with certin hardware specs and if thay are not met you will be lagggggged two death wii and ps3 will werk on desktop systems. np emulating in linux i so much more supirior then winders. exspeshly the new moguler xserver 7.+ no one pirate ;D and iff thay did thair is now way to to find them /unless thair retards. so dont worry about this and git a job and buy one for your self ===better for econimy :D
