Wii keeps top spot, but for how long? More analysis of next-gen sales figures

Microsoft's Xbox 360, Nintendo's Wii, and Sony's PlayStation 3 - Image 1

The most recent statistics from the NPD Group have just revealed that the Nintendo Wii seems to be the next-gen console of choice among gamers. For February alone, the Wii had sold 335,000 units, as compared to the Xbox 360's 228,000 and the PlayStation 3's 127,000. Taking the overall lifespan of the console though, undoubtedly, Microsoft has gained ground with their full year's head start in the market. Right now, the big MS has 5 million units sold in U.S. alone, while the Wii and PS3 are trailing behind with 1.86 million and 1.1 million respectively.

Statistics are statistics. Numbers can always change and they do not, in any way, instantly dictate any "winner" among competitors. However, statistics still show us some possible insight at what the market is currently clamoring for, if anything else. Michael Gartenberg of Jupiter Research gives us a bit of his analysis of the whole situation though:

We've seen Nintendo expand the marketplace and grow it beyond the traditional gamer. They really redefined the videogame experience [...] Microsoft and Sony clearly have larger aspirations for the game console in the living room as a portal for some of the other services they're trying to sell. The hardcore gamer may be the one purchasing the console, but other family members may use the other features. Nintendo's approach has been to get non-gamers playing games.

True, the Wii remote is one astounding innovation to get non-gamers into the whole phenomenon. But that's not to say that Sony and Microsoft aren't trying to attract non-gamers as well. As Reuters put it, Sony and MS are marketing "their respective new-generation consoles by positioning them as home entertainment hubs."

David Riley of the NPD Group has also voice his sentiments, saying that the Wii's "gaming comes first" nature seems to be easier for the non-gamers to grasp rather than Sony and Microsoft's home entertainment message. Riley explains: "While they have that capability, it's not that easy to use. It's going to be a ways off before that capability becomes mainstream."

Well, different companies have different prospects for their consoles. Microsoft has their booming Xbox Live Marketplace, whose downloads have seen an increase ever since they included TV and movie content. Sony has their own strategy, with their own Blu-ray DVD and the much-awaited PlayStation Home. And for Gartenberg:

All of these strategies are viable. It's not a question of one over the other. Nintendo has demonstrated that there are multiple ways to get into the hearts and minds of other family members. Their challenge going forward is to make sure this is not a passing fad by getting a stream of content into the market. The game console purchase driver is still going to be first and foremost games. The secondary stuff is the icing on the cake.

The wii put too little effort in its hardware department. The wiimote is a neat idea but can it hold its on for another 5 years using the same gfx technology as the past gen? Only time will tell...

The PS3 is only selling good as long as people keep thinking it is good.

As soon as they realize, that they got ripped off by sony and the PS3 is FAAAR away from beeing a computer, the PS3 stops beeing sold so much. (at least for this prize... hey... it is still only a console!)

» oh really flow****

so i guess your definition of a computer is something that runs windows. and ps3 is not a ripoff. im 13 years old and with a minor after school job i easily acquired a new ps3, a second controller, and a couple games. and i still have a bunch left over. They say you get what you pay for and that is the exact case with wii and ps3. Wii is cheap because well...it only plays games and does a bunch of other useless crap like show the weather(please i can do that on my psp). ps3 costs more but you can play games, watch videos, listen to music, view photos, interact with other PSN users, run linux (which allows programming and a wider expanse of software), surf the internet (wii has a browser but it is crap, ps3s has flash player and supports web 2.0), can be remote controlled by the psp, can connect to accessories such as a camera or an ipod, and can cure cancer with folding@home.

and don't tell me graphics don't matter.what has changed from NES to SNES?, N64 to Gamecube?, PS to PS2? Every generation saw an increase in graphics. and this generation is no different. This is considered the HD era just as N64 was in the 3D era. and HD is considered a graphical improvement.

» PS3 will fail, Wii and 360 will dominate

firstly, the Xbox 360

-good graphics, especialy Gears

-thousands of extra content available on xbox Live

You can download full HD movies, even rent Hd movies to you 360 directly without getting up from your seat.

Lets not froget 6,000,000+ Gamers on Xbox Live!

100+ games, something for everyone Great Price and Lots of assessories.

Any game made on Xbox 360 can be made into a port for PC easily and viseversa.

XNA: create your own 360 games.

Connect Cameras, phones, mp3, even network a windows xp pc or a MAC (with connect360)to it to stream movies, music, video and live TV

play your favorite Original Xbox games, but not all.

The wii, Cheap, and a new inovative idea, motion sensitive gameplay, a new way to play games.

The wii doesn't go for nice graphics or super powerfull possesors. It aims towards family affordable fun.

Plus it has online and wireless internet. Pluys its Nentendo(i spelt it wrong)

Download and play previous Nentendo console games on it(like Super Nentendo, N64, etc)

PS3, is going to fail

It was already hacked. 4 system updates.

PSN has horrible online, Lets you use dial up.

PS3 is expensive for 2nd and 3rd party developers to develop games for it.

PS3 had power and beautiful graphics but at what cost.

You cnplay all you ps3 and ps1 ames thats nice compared to the 360 BC capiabilities

sony losses $200+ a console and theres very few games for it, wheres the profit?

Plus a 600+ dollar price tag. I could buy a wii and a 360 with that money

by RD261 - 2007-04-02 16:35

The fact that you cant afford doesn't mean its going to fail. You are just another st..d fanboy that wants the ps3 to fails so that you can get all the exclusives on your cheaper consoles. Learn to love and appreciate all current consoles. For me Im not interested in shooters and therefore do not care for the 360, since thats all it has. And for the wii, when ninty releases a zelda, paper mario, or super smash I'll be the first one to get it. Right now Im looking forward to get a ps3 first so that I can play heavenly swords and liar when they come out in may.

what confuses me is that if the ps3 is THAT much better, why are you all so pissed at all those ps3-exclusives that jumped ships over to the 360... if the ps3's so good, why worry

and why rip on the wii, if graphics are all that matters to you, why is it threatening you to the point you have to diss it to make you feel better on your ps3 purchase, since the wii is such a piece of crap in the hardware department, shouldn't you focus on a console thats more directly compared to, the 360

it seems like nintendo has a good schedule of releases to keep its console popularity up, may not be the highest but still up

some of you need to pull your head out of your own ass and stop making stupid comments every time the sales numbers for the wii irritates you

take it easy on the wii guys... it has it's own market and some people deserves to get entertained too... let's admit it, some people won't even know what to do with an xbox or a ps3 controller... they also couldn't care less about graphics and other extras... they just want to enjoy and the wii is giving them that...

don't get me wrong, i have a ps3 but i'm just giving the wii it due... if it's just a fad then so be it... it has already entertained millions who don't even like video games...

as for the ps3... it's going to take its place sooner or later and there's no doubt about that... the xbox as a home entertainment hub??? if you want your entertaiment center to become an octupus then why not.

» If I wanted a 360 or Wii I would have one

Who cares which console is selling better than any other? This is a PS3 board is it not? Are there not XBOX 360 and Wii boards?

I could have had an Xbox 360 months ago, I chose not to, mainly because I have a fairly powerful PC which I play games on and in my eyes the 360 is a PC games machine. I could have had a Wii, again I chose not to. Sure, the Wiimote is excellent but I expect a little bit more eye-candy nowadays (again because I play graphics intensive PC games). I wanted a PS3 because it`s a PS3, NOT because I couldn`t get a Wii. First and foremost it`s a great games machine. Secondly it`s a great movie player, be it on DVD or BluRay. DVDs actually look better than when played on my DVD player and BluRay IS as good as they say. Yes, they are more expensive, but it`s new technology...it`s bound to be.

People here need to get a grip. It`s great to have healthy competition between consoles, but don`t take it to extremes. If you have an Xbox 360, great for you. It is a good machine, just not to my taste. If you have a Wii, I`m sure it`s good fun...good for you. Just because I CHOSE to buy a PS3 don`t think I`m a brainwashed Sony fanboy...I`m 37 lol

Just be happy with your choice, I know I am and I don`t regret it one bit.

» Idiots

The point to be made wasn't about which system will end up with LESS shooters, the point was that the PS3 will have a strong lineup of BOTH shooters, as well as adventure and RPG games, while the 360 will attract the more shallow titles focused on a minimal story line with a great online system to try to make up for it. Something is definitely going wrong when your best title can be completed in one short evening... (Can anyone say GeOW?)

The PS3 will continue to get great titles from Japan like it always has, while the 360 will more than likely miss out an most of these since.

All this bickering makes me sad to admit I'm an American, when so many act like you do, with our heads shoved so far up your asses that you can't see the light of day enough to understand that there's people with interests that may differ from our own. Sad.

But in the real world FACT is the 360 is the worlds best selling console, if Nintendo can make enough machines both will proberly sit at top spot and as for the PS3 will be in exactly the same position its in now and the time you think its the next gen console, Nintendo and MS will use their profits to release new backward compatible monster machines that will make the PS3 look like a Sega Megadrive......

» Just so you know

Where all in "Current Gen" right now, next gen is a decade away.

also, your "Reality" is the fact that:

PS3+ Current Gen

Xbox 360+ Current Gen

Wii+ Current Gen

Scale of 1-10 in regards to "next gen" specs

PS3+0

360+0

Wii+0

Where currently in a new generation, and the next one wont be far off, so your "next generation graphics" are really just "graphics".

Also, i wanted a console that is easily accessible to anyone, so i got a Wii. I LOVE online and the competitive edge, so i got a 360. I'm not that really in love with graphics, so I'm holding back on the PS3. I still have my Ps2, even though it was inferior in specs compared to the other last gen consoles, i loved it the most.

BTW, i need some help getting convinced that i should buy a PS3 NOW. So can someone give me a nice list of stuff i would expect if i get a PS3 now? That rules out FUTURE games.

by ME - 2007-04-03 04:46

A lot of people can look past the "outdated" graphics if the game is imersive and fun to play.

Nintendo is the master of imersion (look at the Zelda series). I'm sure they will still do well as long as they don't allow crappy 3rd party software venders to make Wii games.

And, this is coming form a PS3 fan. IRT PS3, we finally have a system capable of delivering in both gameplay (imersion) and graphics. Too bad Nintendo and Sony wouldn't cooperate with eachother, they would KICK A$$!

Come on and get real here, given enough time there will be tons of Japanese titles brought over to the US, just so long as you idiots don't get what you want and turn the US into a no longer be a viable option for games that actually have a plot...

Sony is based out of Japan, and the PS3 has only been out for a few months. Give the devs time to make some games, your common impatience is what causes game devs to rush things along and F things up.

The 360 is all but non existent in Japan. It will not be the first system looked at when considered for Japans groundbreaking games.

Back in the earlier days of gaming, when a good title was more common and easier to come across, almost all games originated from Japan, and for a large part this is still the case, except for your common M$ shooters that your brainless kids have come to like so much.

We'll see when more titles like White Knight and Final Fantasy start to arrive. That's when gaming will start to get interesting again. As of right now, none of the new systems offer anything that I would consider groundbreaking nor interesting.

The Next Generation has NOT arrived for most of you yet.

How many of you lamers are playing your 360's and PS3's on SDTV's or small screen monitors? I'd wager more than 90% of you fall into this category.

It truly doesn't become next gen until you've played your games on a nice sized widescreen HDTV at a minimum of 720P.

The PS3 is clearly the winner when it comes to HD capabilities, with the 360 not too far behind. The Wii is sadly stuck in the last generation, but hopefully good games will come with the added creativity included with the intuitive controls.

Until mainstream gamers convert to HD, none of your comments have much value in my book.

The ps3 is also about $300-400 dollars more than a normal blu-ray player and is also much more decent. and a computer with its power costs well beyond a thousand dollars.

» Wow...

I haven't posted on these boards in a LOOOOONNNNNG time and seeing arguments like this remind me why. I wonder why it is that people feel so pressed to say 360,PS3 or Wii is the best when all three systems are in their INFANCY. 360 is holding the lead now because it's had a full year ahead of the other 2 and that's just plain commonsense. Developers are going to jump on whatever system arrives first and try to make a few quick bucks then they will evolve from there jumping from ship to ship.

That's not meant to discredit the 360 as i'm sure it offers it's share of hits but i think it's entirely too early for anyone to say it's the clearcut winner of this battle royal.

PS3 doomed? Wow...just barely over the first quarter of the year and already declared dead? Man, anyone who says something of the like HAS GOT to be a devoted FANBOY. The PS3 has just gotten started on this track and with TIME it will see it's share of success.

Wii is in every single way a fad. It is however a bright and entertaining idea. Nintendo may not have made the move for graphics but rather for entertainment, which is really what video gaming is all about. In the end, if Nintendo can snag a few good titles they could be the system that IS declared the winner of the next-gen war, but again only TIME will tell that.

It is simply all about patience people, as they say, Rome wasn't built in a day.

On a little side note, a very interesting point was brought up. How IS Nintendo getting these numbers when stores nationwide have been clean for months? Don't tell me they're selling out as soon as they come in because that would be a HUGE lie. I live near 2 Gamestops, 1 EBGames, 1 GameCrazy and 2 Walmarts, all said the same thing when i asked if any Wii's were coming in, April. It's the same thing down in FL i have buddies who been searching store after store with no success. So, uh, what IS going Nintendo? Inflating your sales or is there a magical store somewhere in the US that's not out of stock?

PS: Even Nintendo World in NY is constantly out of stock!

Well i have to say i been reading a lot of discussions over the xbox 360 vs ps3 "sorry wii not in this battle" and iv come to a conclusion that xbox 360 owners are really insecure, due to the ps3's edge "you know wot i mean by edge right?" the xbox 360 it nice an all but its all hardware put together to make money for the company and the games just seem a bit for the "not so bright people" not saying if you have a xbox 360 your dumb but u know wot i mean....

The ps3 on the other hand has more soul to it, sony wanted the ps3 to be that much better "in my opinion a success" taking more time "which costs money by the way" which in turn can explain a part of the pricing, despite the pricing "which i didn't think was to bad" i know that Sony put time an effort in making a gaming machine "a fantastic one at that". yes the games right now suck but give it a little time "Oct 2007 a good month". oh and the online play is quick, easy, fun oh and free!

ps3 clear winner in my eyes.

ps. mum and sisters are loving the six-axis controller.

» Playstation 3 is done

Sorry guys ps3's days are over! I mean really who is gonna spend 600$ dollars for a ps2 with hd graphics! I bet no one knows that the 360 is cheaper and better looking than ps3! and if any of you sony fanboys have any sense the Nintendo Wii is outselling Ps3 and is of to a better start than all 3 systems, and if Nintendo wanted to; They can make an add on for the Wii system to output hgher hd graphics an so on! Just think!
