Wii ISO Loader video: play your Wii games without modding your console

Over the past few months, homebrew development on the Nintendo Wii has literally made some leaps and bounds. Developer Waninkoko once again astounds the homebrew community with the latest work in progress to help turn the console into a virtual hacker's paradise.

A video of Wii ISO Loader was recently released by the developer, showing off how the current build can now load The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess from the Wii Homebrew Channel. It seems that users will soon be able to play backup copies of their Wii games without having to resort to modding their console.

Suffice to say, there's going to be a lot of buzz in the homebrew scene once a stable copy of this app is finally out. In any case, you can take a look at the evidence for yourself by playing the video we've provided below.

Thanks to Bam for the tip!

yo its bad DO NOT RELEASE IT. I will take a copy though because disks are not playable on my console anymore but this will end up dragging out to something horrible were every one is going to pirate this.

This is a shame, I thought the Wiibrew community was against developing an iso loader. I guess Waninkoko couldn't resist thee wishes from thee pirates.

I am just waiting for this to support USB HDD's, then I have some money to donate to wani!!

Keep it up bud. this NEEDS to be made to run outside of HBC though. It wont take long for HBC beta 8.5 or 9 to come out that specifically blocks this homebrew from running on it. So you need to make it install as a channel that can be loaded from the menu.

Also, to the guy above, this does not help you. your wii MUST still have a working dvd drive. This just allows you to run it on the wii with no mod chip, but you must still have the copied game in there and reading. Thus the term "iso" is a bit miss leading. Because once its burned it is no longer an iso, but thats whats playing.

It's time for another exclusive video from TehSkeen. This time our feature presentation is a demonstration of the work in progress Nintendo Wii Backup Loader coded by the infamous and often controversial hacking guru Waninkoko. Yeah, read the first sentence again if you're at a loss for words.

The ISO Loader works like this. You create a legal backup of a game you own, convert the ISO file with a special program then burn it. After this, you copy over the ISO Loader to the Homebrew Channel and run it. It will boot the legal backup. Pretty simple. Oh, and no modchip is required. However, it does require you to have Waninkoko's Custom IOS installed.

This is a unprecedented moment in Nintendo Wii hacking history as is probably going to cause a massive movement in the scene. Too bad Nintendo didn't take Bushing's advice on blocking the method of doing this. Maybe they will now? Of course, this sort of thing isn't condoned by the "general" homebrew scene and when it's released will ultimately lead to some turmoil.

TehSkeen doesn't support piracy. We don't index releases, we don't spread torrents, we don't run contests to dump VC/Wiiware games. Heck, we don't host any tools to inject WAD files with. Waninkoko's motivation for creating the ISO Loader is unknown, but it is illegal and morally wrong to use it for booting illegal copies of games you don't own.

With that all said and done, what do you all think of this milestone in the Nintendo Wii scene? Do you support the project? Do you think it'll force Nintendo to take some sort of action against the "scene"? Oh, please keep out all of the "it's fake" BS in your replies. It's real. Period.

» This was needed

iso loaders are also needed to run backups, thanx to my baby sis, my wii sports dvd is ruined... i dont want to buy another copy!

» WTF?

Did you guys actually watch the video???

This is NOT a ISO loader, its a BACKUP loader.

All it does is replace the modchip. Nothing new.

When an ACTUAL ISO LOADER comes out then that will be the biggest news ever.

As I have a modchip in mine I'm not going to bother with this at all.

by NakedFaerie - 2008-09-15 22:35
» psp?

As soon as the Wii gets an actual ISO loader then the Wii be the best seller for months. The PS3 and 360 will be way behind in sales and Nintendo wont know what happened. It'll be like last christmas where there wasnt enough Wii's to go around.

Look at the PSP. That can play ISOs and its still a big seller. Yea, UMDs are dying off but its not because of the custom firmware its coz UMDs are a bad idea.

80% of Wii games are a bad idea so an ISO loader wont change much in the sales of games but it will sell a LOT of Wiis after its released.

by FreePlay - 2008-09-15 23:23
» err

for it to become a bestseller, it has to have good games first...

by SolidXnake - 2008-09-16 00:49
» ..uh?

This is a Disc loader not ISO loader. However, is not far from it. Just need a way to simulate a virtual driver and that's it, you have an ISO loader.

» YES! finally my wii might get some playtime

im usually against this as ive seen what its done to the psp, but if the wii actually had some good games (with the exceptions of brawl mario kart ect eg the ones i have already brought) then i wouldnt have bothered but now i finally get to try out the games with out feeling ripped off

by BIH - 2008-09-16 04:40

lol ull never bring Nintendo down even with this. Since most of the people who own Wiis are either not intrested in things like this or cant do it. The ones that will use it for piracy are a very few of those 30 million consoles.

Dont worry about Nintendo loosing money there huge pockets are filled with money.

While it is unusual that even I got a Wii, the homebrew capabilities are as good as the PSP if not better. When I said the Wii was a horrible value earlier, I did not consider the great homebrew available for it. Now an ISO loader with no modchip? It looks like Wii's will continue to be hot sellers. Sadly, it isn't because of decent legal Wii games.

Hhhhheeee hhheee hheeee

Looks like Nintendo should have wised up a little earlier. Their 3.3 Wii munu update was defeated within days. They got tipped off about the exploit and did nothing. Now their laziness is going to hurt them.

Victory is mine!

This is up to the developer to include a hack to bypass the region or patch the region but if the hack is solid, he should be able to figure that one out. That's the last thing that is taken care of after the hack is fully functional. ;)

This is a SOFT mod. At any point in time Nintendo can kill it.

In fact, letting it slide and letting the exploit become released only to SMASH it later will strengthen trust with developers.

Either way, most of the Wiis success is first party anyway so...doesn't matter one bit. But you knew that right? HAHAHAHA!!!!

by Stinky_1 - 2008-09-17 16:06
» ....

If Wani didnt exist then this wouldnt have existed either.

But, since you put it the way you did, I wonder how Bushing feels knowing that he is directly responsible for a solderless backup loader being created?

This will certainly devide the Wiibrew scene. Up until now everyone was kissing Bushings butt saying "what are you going to do next". When I bet you a LOT of them all along just wanted the info needed to make something just like this. Now that its out and ready to run I wonder how big the "moral ism camp" is going to stay up??

dont get me wrong here. I fully stand by what Bushing stands for. But he assumes that everyone is going to use this for illegal things. When really all that has been made here is a wii emulator. I dont see this any different than a Snes emu, or nes emu, or gc emu. It allows you to play backup copies of games that you may or may not own the rights to on your wii. Only difference is that some would argue the Snes is dead, so the devs got their money, we just want to play mario all stars.

But, its still all in the same moral code. I suppose this is just a darker shade of grey than the emulators are?

Hey,

Check out this new site I found called GiftMonkey.com. They give away free high end Laptops, Video Game Consoles, iPods, Plasma TVs, and they even have GPS Navigation Systems.

This site is different from all of those others. They don't give you a time limit, and they don't make you signup for 10 sponsors yourself. All you have to do is try one of their sponsored offers like eBay (which doesn't cost anything), refer your friends, and they ship your free gift to your door, also free!

when i 1st got a iso running on a psp i thought it would be the best thing ever, it was. but i regret that mainly because the psp does not have many games coming out on it. unlike the ds you have to pay for a chip. but things like the psp were all you need is a cfw for dummies and a little knowledge about torrents. it will all be the same for this. soon the wii will fail in game sales. id say don't release it, because there will allways be people who will use it not too run "backed up games"

by Stewies - 2008-09-18 14:23

@GhostSonic. Mr. Sense's objective is simply to spread his BS all over QJ forums and not to piss off fanboys. The reason why everyone rebuttals his arguments in anger is due to the fact he never makes ANY sense. By the way Mr. Sense, your reflection of Peter was truly an epic failure.

by ryan_rocks29 - 2008-09-19 01:19
» Did you do this?

First, you need to install the wad that comes with this using Wad Manager. After that, you need to install DVDX (go to advanced and choose IOS 249 when installing). Now the loader should work. Also make sure you convert the Wii game ISO with the tool that comes with the download before burning.

by ryan_rocks29 - 2008-09-19 01:22
» Also

Have you got a PAL compatible TV? Because this loader only supports PAL at the moment and if you have an NTSC only TV then it won't display.
