Wiihabilitation program developed at St. Mary's Medical Center - Image 1Wii-habilitation: that's the new word being used at St. Mary's Medical Center (SMCC) for its Acute Rehabilitation Unit to help patients meet their rehabilitation goals by using the Nintendo Wii's intuitive game controls. Physical and occupational therapy exercises have been developed using the Wii to strengthen muscles and coordinate motions.

The program is currently being used for patients to rebuild lost skills, improve concentration and, physical functions through the Wii's interactive format. Patients recovering from strokes, spinal injury, broken bones and surgery have so far undergone this treatment.

Developed by Dr. Justin Liu, chair of back and trauma rehabilitation at SMCC, the program aims to exercise the body in ways similar to traditional therapy exercises. He describes this innovative program as such:

In today's world of constant innovation, it is only natural that we use cutting edge technology to push the envelope of physical rehabilitation while making the overall process more exciting and fun. If patients have great success with achieving functional improvements by using the Wii, it is a very viable option for certain patients to purchase their own Wii system and continue using the program once they return home.

SMCC offers Wii-habilitation video games for tennis, ping-pong, and bowling. The equipment and set up of the Wii-habilitation program costs around US$ 1,300 - a price significantly more cost effective and space efficient than traditional gym equipment.

WTF!?!?!?!?!

How funny, the only reason I came to this article was to post: I'm waiting to see if Mr. Nonsense has the balls to come here and call these people Wiitards. Me waits as sees.... On a more serious note, I've been through physical therapy and it can be so BORING and despressing. I think this is awesome and it should make a lot more lives easier to get back on track.

WTF!?!?!?!?!

HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was great!
by Mister Common Sense - 2008-03-20 12:51:21
well

I did play Wii sports, that sucked bad enough. Other games I've read several reviews and saw the gameplay videos before. If the majority of reviewers don't like a game, why would it be better if I played it?

WTF!?!?!?!?!

"I did play Wii sports, that sucked bad enough" I STILL love that game. "If the majority of reviewers don't like a game, why would it be better if I played it?" Well, first you need to ask yourself, WHO the hell are these reviewers. Second, you need to realize that you are your own person and your views do not match those of others enough to base your sole decision on reviews. How many times has the "majority" of reviewers deemed a movie as two thumbs down yet you liked it? Reviews in terms of point scale should only be 20% of your decision IF that. The actual game content of the review is what your after.

well m.sense

"Other games I've read several reviews and saw the gameplay videos before." and this why you are not a gamer. gamers play games based on the game not the review

.

I would never insult the physically challenged, I feel bad for them. The mentally challenged, or Wii-tarded, deserve it because, well, there's just no excuse for that.

WTF!?!?!?!?!

"The mentally challenged......deserve it because, well, there's just no excuse for that." Holy crap!!!! How much a POS can you possibly be? Those who are mentally challenged do NOT have any choice in the matter and they deserve equal respect. Damn dude, you are total POS.
