Wii firmware update 2.0 to bring HD capacity? |
Ó
And the Wii rumor mill continues to churn its way around gaming communities everywhere as new bits of information seem to keep circulating around this nifty little console. And the latest addition to this batch of maybes? That a simple firmware update will make the DVD version of the Wii an HDTV-compatible system. This theory is gleaned from a short interview with Ninty's Reggie and USA Today, from which he is quoted as saying:"Tough choices about not including a DVD player at the start, tough choices about not including high-definition capability at the start. ThatÂ’s because we wanted a mass-market price, and we believe the market will validate those decisions come launch day on this Sunday."
To further chase this shadow of a possibility, Game Informer is also noted to have given Nintendo PR people a call about the matter, and was given the answer that "if Microsoft could enable 1080P with a firmware update, then Nintendo might be able to do the same thing". Well, let's just hope that later firware updates don't end up bricking the Wii, though...
Because of these two pieces of information, speculations have been flying as to how exactly this may affect the way that the Wii is sold. Until we receive confirmation about the matter, though, let's just sit back for now and see if all the necessary ingredients for this supposed-feature will jump into the cooking pot on its own, and graduate from rumor to fact.

When Reggie says that, he's saying that "mass market will validate [the decision to not include DVD functionality and HD capability]" meaning that he believes consumers will understand Nintendo's decision to leave out those two capabilities.
I'd like the option to keep the blue light around the disc slot on when playing.
stfu i just bought a lcd for 500 at frys wii connect 24 is on and i have the widescreene option and the HD 480p (or i..dont quiote)option thats inside the 4page wii menu
Wii 2.0(U) is already out.
I havent seen or heard any of my friends have a bricked wii yet... just having a stable router does it. and as other people have said its possible to redo the fw if its bricked. id love to know what kinda drive is in this wii already, and if there is just a fw update to enable the dvd if there is already
What in the ***** is "Ninty"? You just lost some respect.
this is so funny
but the wii has no HDMI port or am i missing something
hdmi isnt required for hdtv; component, vga or plain dvi can do it. hdmi or dvi with hdct is only needed to play blu-ray or hd dvds with the image constraint token enabled at full resolution. but that doesnt matter for the wii since it cant play either of those formats. it doesnt even matter for the 360 or ps3 since most studios have said they wont use the ict for a while
Some rumors on the net about unconfirmed Up-Scaler that enable Wii 720p, 1080i and 1080p resolution on HDTV with component cables. NYKO is suspect about this. If it true is so amazing! I imagine Zelda in 1080p in my HDTV WHOAAAAA!!!!!!!!
And upscaler does NOT enable HD. It simply resamples the image and outputs it at a higher resolution. This is not any better than what your TV probably already does if you have a halfway decent TV. And if you don't, take the money you'd spend on the upscaler and buy a good TV instead. They aren't that expensive. Simplified: Once the signal leaves the Wii, you cannot improve it. It's done.
what will it matter watching a game with crappy graphics like far cry in 1080p? i think they would definately need a graphics update to validate a big update in res like that
