Wii eclipses Xbox 360 in overall sales, becomes new market leader |

Game industry sales tracking site VG Chartz reports that the Nintendo Wii game console has hit total lifetime sales of 10.57 million in the period ending August 23rd, surpassing Microsoft's Xbox 360 to take first place in this generation's console war.VG Chartz says that its figures come from samples drawn from consumers worldwide, and not retailers, meaning that there may have been more Xbox 360s shipped, but more Wiis have been sold.
The Wii launched a year after the Xbox 360, but saw rapid sales in every market it has been distributed in. Since its launch late last year, it has outpaced its rivals in monthly market performance.
VG Chartz says that very few analysts would have even conceived of this development happening a couple of years back, but Nintendo proved all its critics wrong with innovative controls and casual games that expanded the market.
The last time Nintendo led the market was in the early to mid-90s during the heyday of its SNES system. It saw tough times with last generation's GameCube but rebounded strongly with the Wii.

Im telling you guys, Those mofos there are biased tword the 360. I dont care if anyone believes that or not. It wont show up on their site that the wii has surpassed the 360 for another six months.
ever since March (when the PS3 launched in PAL regions) i've already been hearing about how the XBox 360 already has a 10mil install base and the charts show that as well...
with the months going by hasn't the 360 moved on from that 10 mil mark yet? i mean the Wii has obviously jump from one mark to another in record time and even the PS3 has moved from 2.5mil to 3 mil and now 4something mil...
and the 360 is still at 10 mil? that number has stuck in my head cause the 360 boys has always mentioned that from the get go.

There is no reliable source here. The fact is, the 360 outsells both the PS3 and the Wii. If the Wii is actually outselling, it's because it's a cheap piece of last-gen garbage, and goes to show how stupid people really are.

Be aware that you are the one who is acting biased. As Quixand stated, the 360 has been at the same number for practically a year. I would bet that if VGChartz.com were to post that the 360 is outselling the other consoles, you would be calling it the most reliable site you know, simply because you're an XBox fanboy. If you were to pull your head out of you butt for two seconds, you would see that the Wii is really an excellent system, but you're too wrapped up in your precious 360 to give the other consoles a chance. Your post demonstrates how idiotic you are, congratulations .
Congrats to the wii, this was expected since the price is affordable to all the children out there and the games are more fun than serious.

i do have one and although it's not played that much in my household it is quite a riot to have...
infact i'm buying another one to send cause my wife younger kid wanted a game console for his bday and even though the core is the same price as the wii here in australia i have a feeling that he'll like the Nintendo Wii more.
as for the 360 supporters don't get on my case yet as i'm going to pre order an elite, just in time for Mass Effect... hopefully my unit pushes the 360 over 11 million :)
I agree that the Wii has won so far BUT with the basic 360 pack now almost the same price as the Wii I think it will impact the Wii sales over Christmas especially if the 360 also includes a big title in the pack to, I also agree that the PS3 will always be last it has dropped TWO models already only leaving the most expensive One as its only choice, the Elite launches this Friday in Europe with a price tag BELOW £300 again will make a big imapact over the Halo and Christmas times..

The Wii is fun at first, then the novelty wears off after about two weeks. Then you realize you should have spent the $250 on games for 360 or PS3. i got a wii and xbox 360 and i gotta say that the wii is fun but the xbox 360 has one thing better than the wii and that is online play. i play my wii but it gets kinda boring after abit, so does the xbox 360 on single player games but onlne gaming keeps the console alive. i think that microsoft know that they have hit the 10million mark and console sales are going down so they have released the xbox 360 elite to get back into the game. but i doubt they will outsell the wii.

Don't people realize it's just an overclocked gamecube (which sold horribly and is now available for less than $100 new?) This system is maybe worth $150 at the most since it has wifi and an improved controller.

The games are unimpressive! Wii Sports is horrible! Excite Truck sucked! Red Steel sucked! Zelda is good but you can get that on a $100 gamecube. The rest are minigames!

I know so many people that have bought 360s since then. I think all these sales figure sites are total crap.
One of two thigns happened:
1. The 10mil number was shipped in March, still though they would've outsold that.
2. Someone is innacurate. I'm pretty sure its this site as I'm almost certain I read a figure over 11m for 360s sold.
Anyway, who cares? I mean it' s great and all for nintendo, but really this isn't going to make any type of difference.

i think its because people want to try something new and reliabilty which sucks on the 360 most 360s die by the time their a year old and this is true i have had friends where their 360s havent lasted more then a year what does this tell you personaly this is the reason i got the wii i want a console which can last more then 6 months after i get it.But i will also be buying the PS3 when the price drops and better games come out.
The 360 was rushed it thought it could win the console war by being first to release a console now that the wii has overtaken the so called "Gamecube 1.5 or 2.0" and got to 10mill units sold in half the time it took the 360.

The 360 sales numbers have stagnated while the shipping numbers continue to climb because of all the overheating issues with the 360. It doesn't help Microsoft jerks people around so badly on the EZ-Bake 360. I'm personally on 360 number 3. About the only plus side is that I've talked MS into an upgrade for my trouble but it's incredibly hard to get them to actually replace the hardware in the first place.

PS3 has sold 4.5 million since the middle of july idk what it is now. the wii out sell the 360 its whats expected , the 360 sold almost 4 million the holiday season when GoW came out. G4 is so biased towards the PS3 on the AotS they were complaying that it took a year and a couple months for any A list exclusive to come out like MGS4 wtf!!! i am waitingf almost 2 years to play H3 games like GoW and BS arent A list there compared to RFOM, LAIR, HS devs that make exceptional games that havent made substantial mark on the gaming world.
People wanted both next-gen graphics and motion control. Since Nintendo decided to over clock the Game Cube and add motion to it, most multiplatform will come out only for PS3 and Xbox360. Games like GTA, Assassin's Creed, UT07, Resident Evil 5, and Devil May Cry 4. Instead, the Wii gets PS2 ports and mediocre games.
Now if the Wii came with next-gen graphics, I'd be willing to buy the system.

Even though the Wii may not be up to the standards of 360 and PS3 we need to look on the bright side. If the Wii wins this console war, we all can look forward to a graphically better Nintendo system that offers alot more than what the Wii offers now.
X360 has a headstart in the market as it was launched in late 2005. On the other hand, Wii was only launched in Nov 06 and currently it is only 10 months old. I wonder how many units of X360 was sold during its first 10 months? Maybe 5 million units.
Apart from the hardware specs which Wii definitely loose out to PS3 and X360, Nintendo probably wanted to adopt the same formula that make its DS so successful. X360, PS3 controller are not much different from PSX, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube.
Wiimote give its customer a totally different kind of experience by giving its customer a controller that can interact more freely with the console.
Granted that PS3 and X360 definitely has much better graphics than Wii. But what does all of us want from console? Fun, to relax, or to enjoy visually pleasing graphics. Everyone has different needs. For now Wii's sale seem to indicate that the fun factor is more important.
In the handheld areana, PSP has much much better CPU processing power and graphics than DS. But DS has sold much more handheld than PSP.
the wii is the leader in console sales ,but thats only due to the big hype machine they have implaced,if they want to truly be the leader then they will take 1st place as the leader in online as well and then i might be impressed . because people are cheap by nature and good selling hardware isnt $$hhhiiittt without good software with good campain and good online multiplayer with good looking graphics.

Fact: The Wii is a video game console, so therefore it has won the race regardless of whether or not its in "a whole different market".
Fact: The XBlowx711 has had not made significant sales in the past six months.
Fact: The PS3 has sold better in July, and in turn has sold more units faster in its lifetime than the XBlowx711 has despite being "overpriced".
Here are some things to consider:
A) If the Wii is not in the "race against console market", then you would have one since you wouldn't be buying it to compete against your XBlowx711.
B) You act as if a sudden surge of FPS games will suddenly boost up sales of the system. Halo 3 along with those 2345432 FPS games aren't anything new and can be experienced on a PC.
C) You don't give a damn about the Wii because it's technologically inferior to your console. LOL I love how you disregard it as a competing system considering you bash it. That's what you call "insecurity".

Finally, just what i wanted to see, the Wii in first place.
Since the Wii launched and was sold out everywhere for months, anyone with a brain knew it would eventually be the #1 console.
That being said, I seriously doubt that it happened this soon. Before Christmas MS was saying they sold over 10 million 360 units, does VGChartz expect me to believe they havent sold that many since then? Come on, MS sold over a million Elites when that SKU came out. Thats just in the span of the Elite launch. Thats not counting since then, or the premium/core sales since the announcement I cited.
VGChartz pulls their numbers from the same place Nexgenwars and Nexgen.com. They simply dont know. If you look on their site they will say something about following sales trends and the like, but they simply dont know. For more accurate numbers NPD is there for observation, but even thats not accurate because NPD omits several large retailers, most notably WalMart.
Dont worry, when the Wii is the #1 selling console, Nintendo will be sure to let us know. Until then, we dont know for sure.

The Wii is bringing in more consumers to the market, raising their sales and expanding the gamer community, what is the 360 doing to expand their market? Nothing. The fact is, Wii concentrates on customers - all of them. Graphics are nice, but fun is better. If you disagree, well, that's your decision, all I know is there are 10 1/2 million Wii owners that chose Nintendo over Microsoft, and the numbers are rising.
Accept the facts, man, the PS3 and 360 ARE behind in sales, get over it.

The PS Eye "next-gen"? It's just another gimmick, like the Wiimote you also mentioned, and like the useless camera MS already came out with (people who are not MS have said the Vision Cam is capable of motion recognition, like the worthless PS Eye, but it will never happen because NOBODY CARES)

the xbox 360 has ***** hardware. everyone I know that has an xbox360 has at least broke down twice. xbox can contribute their slow sales to their hardware failures. besides in 360's first year they had really crap titles as well, with exception of a few. just like the wii. when are you all going to get off the graphics... they really dont matter that much. the wii and ds have proven that.
why is it acceptable for a system to have such high failure rates. xbox has one game and thats it, and that "games" franchise is about to come to an end. As you can see the 360 is selling around 60,000 per week so over 1 month I would make that around 240,000 so as this is just the USA figures for the USA alone can someone care to explain how the 360 can still be on 10 million?.

The PS3 is only managing to outsell the gamecube now that its sell off of 20 and 60 gig hard drive PS3s is coming to an end.
So when the next hardware official world sales come up expect to see the Wii and the 360 at much higher figures than showing in world total at the moment, as you can see from th chart the Wii is selling around 360,000 per month and the 360 is selling around 240,000 a month in the USA alone so the next OFFICIAL figures the 10 or so million will be far higher

by the way the xbox 360 lasts for a long time as i have had mine for a year and a half now, + microsoft have extended the warranty to 3 years so there is nothing to worry about.
Heavenly Sword has averaged a rating of a terrible 7 out of 10.go take a look its getting bad reviews.
Most of the other titles you mention are just old PS1 revamped titles NOTHING new.
Bioshock and Blue Dragon come to the 360 TODAY NOT NEXT YEAR or whenever.
Listing games that may or may not be good is pointless as LAIR has now proved.

They dont like the fact that the 360 now has an amazing 3 year guarantee and they only get 1 year, the time the 3 year guarntee ens the next gen consoles will proberly be here, perfect situation for 360 owners.
And they akways forget it was just the first round of consoles with the heatsink problem that has since been fixed by MS, the Elite is an amazing machine with all the latest tech and with its big hard drive and under £300 its going to sell well.
PS2 DVD DRIVE OF DEATH still in production but xbox owners dont point out that like the 360 it had a major fault but it being in its dvd drive by the millions, and like the 360 that was in the past so why mention it ? weird or what...
Sell or cook? I don't know that this one is going to put up with it. The upside is that it's the "heavier" version MS is putting the extra heat sinks into, so we'll see. I think Wii is looking to Battalion Wars 2 as their HALO killer. I wasn't so keen on HALO 2, but the original was fun. I think it's likely I'll rent 3 before buying.
Xbox360 figures:
There's a difference between units shipped and units solde.
M$ gives out the units shipped, nextgen / vgcharts etc give the actual sales numbers.

first the xbox360 sold 11.6 million unit as of June 2007 still ahead of wii & 2nd the PS3 didn't outsell the xbox360 in July.

Yea thats cause not even movies get that much, and for all we know halo3 can suck. Im not saying its not the most anticipated game ever but not even FF games get that much in one day. The only thing i remember getting figures like that is the harry potter 7 book which was 376 million in 6 hours. that includes pre-orders. and thats only for 6 hours.
