Does't the 360 and PS3 have discreet surround? This is superior to Dolby Pro Logic II is it not, which IIRC takes a normal stereo output signal and tweaks it to make it sound *like* surround. I'm sure it will be fine though, but nothing too awesome to write home about.
My stereo isn't the greatest with 2 channel and a sub, Pro Logic II sounds superior on it.
We knew since like forever that Wii would have Dolby Pro Logic II.
Pro Logic II is the process of dividing stereo sound into 5.1 by filtering certain frequencies to certain channels. It's good but not ideal as you still can't tell where the sounds come from, unlike true 5.1. I think all last gen consoles had this too
Yeah even the GCN had Pro Logic II, so it's definitely no progress in this department. I guess it's something none of us have been thinking about too much, always concentrating on the graphics, and how the Wii was cheaper cause it had no HD. But I'm concerned that we're in for a lot more cutbacks. Maybe the control system was just that much more expensive to implement.
I'm of course talking relative to NZ dollars. The Wii here is something like NZ$50 (US$30) less than the xbox core system. Of course, they're lucky with people like me who will buy it anyway cause of zelda and mario, but for the "non-gamer" they want to get, in NZ it might be an uphill battle, given the meagre price difference, but far inferior graphics.
Pro Logic II consists of 5 channels - Left, Centre, Right, Left Surround and Right Surround. The channels aren't discrete, but the general opinion seems to be that the perceived sound field is very similar to that of a discrete 5.1-channel track. You need a hardware decoder, but if memory serves you need a hardware decoder to play Dolby Digital tracks from your X360 as well, and chances are if it has one, it'll probably have the other.
This is an old but informative and very in-depth article that explains DPLII in more detail: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_8_1/dolby-prologic2-3-2001.html
the picture of the back of the Wii that was floating around the last week or so I can see what sort of audio out it has. I assume it's got 5.1 out (even though it's not discreet) or are we only getting the stereo portion of that?
...it has a single multi-AV out, similar to the GC. You don't need any special output connectors for Pro Logic II, though - just standard stereo outputs. The extra channel information is very cleverly encoded within the stereo audio track, and gets decoded when you pass the audio through a DPLII compatible decoder. It's really that simple.
