Wii: 5.2 million consoles sold worldwide

While Shigeru Miyamoto will be discussing Nintendo's future over at the GDC, a recent poll has shown the sort of success their Wii console has enjoyed since its initial launch. VG Charts indicates that as of late, the Wii has sold approximately 5.20 million units worldwide, with the bulk of these sales occurring in North America.

And while the Xbox 360 still holds a near-double 9.36 million in sales, keep in mind that the 360's been in circulation since 2005, with the Wii out in the market only as recently as November (US) and December (in Japan) last 2006.

In a span of roughly 3 to 4 months, the Wii is already at a more than half the 360's total sales in two years - only time will tell if it Nintendo can keep up this scorching pace.

The Wii's gaming line-up is also experiencing similar success, with the game sales charts dominated by Wii titles like Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn for Japan, and Wii Sports for the US.

err " with the game sales charts dominated by Wii titles like Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn for Japan, and Wii Sports for the US." -- i didn't know they were selling wii sports seperately in the US.... unless you're counting every wii console sold as a copy of wii sports sold, in that case no other game will be that unless some people buy more than one copy of the same game to play on one console

i don't think you can expect the wii sales to keep up this high.. i'm cheering for the wii but i think we have to be realistic here...

I'll go ahead and beat the 360/PS3 crowd to it and say..."graphics and power are all that matters". Even though the least power system won last gen (PS2), even though the DS is killing the PSP. Now, the PS3 has proven to be NO competition to the Wii. Or, the fact the Wii is already deleting the 360 1yr and a half head start set to dominate by end of this year. Hell my fun, gameplay and originality still stand a chance. Crazy thought that Wii is....I mean actually giving people something NEW to do...imagine that.

that with a much harder to produce system, Sony has only sold a little under half of what Wii has... and its not even released in any other area but JAPAN and USA? Generally most of the world so far has leaned towards Sony, I wouldn't be suprised when the gap gets really close later this year.

Americans are buying wii because of wii sports, thats what i think QJ are implying. But i think zelda and red steel, dragonballz etc all have something to do about this. And someone mentioned about being realistic....look, in UK it is full of play station buyers. I recently spoke to one of the workers in GAME (Very popular gaming store in the UK), he said that the PS3 has more units being shipped out but less are buying them. There were faster pre-orders for the wii then the ps3. Also i bet if amazon uk got a bunch of 100 wiis in right now, they will be gone from the site in like 6 minutes.

nintendo fans think its the greatest thing since sliced bread. Regular people buy it because the media says it's oh so good.. It's a friggin joke. And all those users will be sick of playing it by the end of this year, and nobody will want one again!

No store I know of has received WIIs in any sort of supply. They simply must be making up the numbers :) Why can't nintendo produce enough to get them in stores? Do they only sell them in japan? It's fully possible that they blasted through the 2 million us sales in the first month, because I don't think anyone has seen them since then.

to something like I only will comment nice things about stuff I like. Common Sense points to the fact that people love the Wii and can't get enough of it. Nintendo made 4 million to start with and we all know that for Nintendo that's a huge amount! What are they suppose to do make 10 million for launch not know it's going to be a 'mini-phenomenon' and just think they'll sell that many. No they make what they think is right and no they know they have a winner and are making the supplys faster and in a larger amount

ps2 had the most power of the last generation and dominated the market by being in 71 percent of the sixth generation households. Both the xbox 360 and the ps3 will beat the wii in game sales. the wii was hacked in the first two months that it was out and already i know two people who will not buy anymore games because of all the iso's out on the net. Psp game sales are dead and wiis will be soon also.

psp1.5 creator the fourth entry from the top...your an idiot look at the specs PS2 was the weakest system powerwise. As for 360 an ps3 saling more games..well 360 been out for nearly 2yrs so it has a bigger library, as for PS3 I'm sure it's saling alot the same two titles which would only be Resistance, and VF5 while the rest set on the shelf much like the PS3 itself.

What's realistic is that Wii is STILL sold out everywhere. Every time a shipment comes into a store, people rush in to buy it out along with any peripherals they can get their hands on. PS3 and 360....notsomuch

First of all, having a system that they can't produce quickly is NOT impressive. Secondly, even the units that they HAVE produce, are NOT selling out as fast the the Wii units which are produced much faster.

Wii's arrive at stores more often, but yet it's harder to find a Wii than a PS3. That is impressive on Wii's part, and unimpressive on PS3's.

It's not that stores aren't receiving supplies, it's that every time a store gets a shipment, no matter how large, they sell out within a few hours.

First of all, PSP sales are not dead, they are just lower than DS.

Secondly, piracy is high for PSP because it lends itself so nicely to piracy. Technical savvy people rush and buy PSP's solely for the purpose of hacking them. But the average Wii consumer is not some tech-head looking to hack the ***** out of their console. There are mods out for PS2/Xbox/Cube and even Dreamcast, but sales were hardly affected for them. The Wii will be no different.

So what is a real game? DOAX2? Viva Pinata? Oh I know your probably talking about arcade games that surpass the VC titles like 'Beer Tapper'. Oh wait I know you probably meant that uber cool game of Kameo with it's wonderful graphics and not so good gameplay. Was I close to guessing what real games you were talking about?

As far as you making an attempt to make claims that every game that comes out on the Wii has 'Weeble Wobbles' is an very bad attempt. Wii has Manhunt 2, Godfather, Scarface and many more of these "Real Games" you so want. Oh plus Wii will have accual real games come out for it too instead of this junk that the mass media 360 and ps3 bots want. You know like the games that are GTA but not GTA like Crackdown.

this is for the josh fellow..........saying why the psp's sale is low because of piracy. yea psp's software piracy is very common, but why would that effect the hardware sale. i mean wont people buy to psp just so they can have free games. if anything that should boost psp hardware sales.........duh

People like Mister Common Sense are grown ass folks who still wear underoos.

Power and graphics aren't the end all, gameplay and fun are.

These graphic whores are the type of people that probably think Fantastic Four is a better movie than Star Wars (1977) because the special effects are better.

The Sega Master System was more powerful than the NES but was crushed.

The Genesis was less powerful than the SNES but put up a strong fight.

The Playstation was not as powerful as the N64 but won.

And the PS2 was the weakeset of the post 32/64 bit generation but won.

All of these consoles won because they had the most and better games.

The PS3 has priced itself out of most people's price range, why pay $600 for a PS3 when you can spend a little more and upgrade your PC.

Nintendo will once again rule the video game world, and Sony doesn't make games, Nintendo has created the most known video game icons in history (Donkey Kong, Super Mario, Zelda, Metroid....)
