Wii 2 already in the works; can it live up to expectations? |

Ó
Although the Wii is still selling like hotcakes, Nintendo big boss Satoru Iwata has revealed that they are already working on its successor. We probably won't see it hit the market until Wii sales die down though (which might not be anytime soon). At this point though, the question really isn't when they'll release it, but what they'll be releasing. The Wii made a pretty huge impact in this generation of consoles for its revolutionary design - but can "Wii 2" live up to these standards?
Iwata himself isn't sure on that point.
Every hardware needs some revolutionary features. This time around, it happened to be we had a revolutionary user interface. Will it be the same for the next generation? I really can't tell.
It's natural for the current customer to expect Nintendo is going to once again do something different. If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it's going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again.
So what's the deal with this new Wii anyway? Iwata didn't give much clues, but he did have this to say about it: "We are always preparing for the next hardware. We are under development. Â… But the hardware is a kind of box that consumers reluctantly buy in order to play our games." Probably won't be the case when it actually hits the market though.

The only people who adopted the Wii before it became a fad were their loyal hardcore fans who are now completely abandoned and disheartened.
This is Nintendo's build to a big big fall and I cant watch to watch it unfold.

The only thing that has abandoned me in the Wii years is the fact that the BBFC are run by commie pig dogs (to quote vice city) and have banned Manhunt 2. Thats it.

the new wii is goning to need many things to improve the machine thats starting to die for me
-a built in hardrive
-allow the gamecube controller to control the main gui so i dont have to get out a wiimote just to start up smash bros then switch back to the controller
-a wiimote with internal charger similer to the ps3 controler
-im not gonna complain about wifi just the friend codes. if they arent gonna completely rid of this then at least make the wii friend code universal. for instance if i have one person added to my wii address book he is automatically a friend on all my wifi games, so do away with games individual codes
there of course are other things but their the top on my list i need a consel that can live up to my gamming patterns

It's always been the case with Nintendo anyway.
To create a new sysytem it takes a long development time. If Zelda takes 2-3 years can you imagine building the system that runs it ? And then there's going to be the final fase of development where they will have to actually build the sales unit and do their sales marketing.
It will take at least 4 more years till a new system will hit our homes.
Not the one of this two dudes that posted before me obviously which don't care about Nintendo if all they can comment about such a news is how pitiful the current hardware is.
I wonder why some haters don't just hang around their favorite PS3 or Xbox360 forums....they must be so bored with their multi-tasking/entertainment hubs so called consoles that in order to relieve their agony they have to go and write something about Nintendo....
Seriously guys, go and play some Halo with Mister common douce or whatever his name is....

as for controls? why not expand on the wiimote and have a betrer nunchuck like thing?
Oh and pleas switch the IR camera with the sensor bar: one IR camera, and 4 infared devices. if each device blinks in a very rapid but different patern then I think the camera could see each remote as seperate.

Speaking of pathetic hardware.. of the 3 consoles I own, only the Wii has been sent for repairs (less than 3 months after purchase.)
I expect even my Xbox to last more than 3 months.
Reply
And that was based on what? The information in your head?
I talked to people in line that had never owned a Nintendo product in the past. As well, I'm a fan and am completely happy with my purchase to this very day.
That alone proves your comment false.
Reply
Of the three consoles I owned ONLY my 360 was sent in for repairs MULTIPLE TIMES.
So your point is hopelessly lost.
There is nothing to justify.
But, your comment does help to prove something. It proves that your comments are based only on your own experiences. That tiny little box you live in when compared to the great big world we all live in. You claim the Wii to be pathetic hardware because it broke on you while your other two consoles did not yet you ignore FACTS and DATA that prove the Wii to have a smaller failure rate then the 360.
Hum... interesting. No wait...not really...

and the IR camera thing is very ingenious... i hate the sensor bar... always gets loose...

All 3 consoles have set a new bar of mediocrity this generation and as such, is a poor choice of ammunition to criticize any of them.
The only benchmark that matters is attachment rate. Not Game attachment rate, but system attachment. Microsoft and Sony both have a good enough following within their industry to continue on. Nintendo has a niche following that has yet to prove it is willing to continue into the next generation. My bet lay squarely on "No"

And yet YOU ignore that the PS3 and 360 pwn Wii anytime.

WTF? Now what kind of revolutionary features does the Wii have? I have a 20-year old TV and it has a F*CKING REMOTE CONTROLLER.

"Nintendo's always been a generation behind, look at the N64 to PS1, GC to Xbox and PS2, and now Wii against PS3 and 360. Lol, what'll this be? HD in 2011? When virtual reality or holograms or whatever is what Sony and Microsoft will be doing?"
You're wrong on all points. N64 held up decently to the PS2, hardware wise. Graphics were generally better, and no loadtimes. What was it lacking other than discs? I do admit the carts were prett limiting, though. As for the Gamecube, technology-wise, it beat the ***** out of the PS2 (any game made for both consistently looked better on the Gamecube) and was at least completely on par with the X-Box, so why exactly would you call it a generation behind? It looks like you're just trying to find an excuse to Nintendo bash.
Reply
And in the xbox vs gamecube vs ps2, core2kid18 is talking about features.. not graphics wise... like xbox and ps2 had both online play, and GameCube had it, but was little to none supported by the devs, even by 1st party devs.. so thats a win for the ps2 and xbox..
ANYWAYS... i dont understand why you argue than the gamecube is better because it had better graphics than the ps2 and the xbox?? isnt the same with the ps3/xbox 360 and the wii now?? so are you saying than at this point, the ps3/xbox360 are better than the wii? ;)
Oh and then it comes the wii vs ps3 vs xbox 360...
1- wii doesnt have a in-built dvd player
2- i can count the online games for the wii with the fingers of my hand
3- The wii has poor graphics. (dont yell at me.. i just said this because of "imapterodactyl" as he seems to care too much about graphics.)
so you could say in some ways that the wii has been always a generation behind, but the thing is that nintendo owns some of the best games of the world (zelda, mario, metroid), and they surely know how to make them beautiful, and i like that from nintendo..
just my 2 cents. :)
peace out ^_^

To cancel out ISOHaven's anecdotal evidence with my own, I am thoroughy disappointed with the Wii's game lineup as is the person I dumped my Wii off on.

Let me clue you in to English 101.
When someone makes a comment that suggests 100 percent of all loyal Nintendo fans are disheartened and you can prove that at least ONE is not disheartened then that proves the original comment false. Just because you jump out of the word work and claim you are disheartened yourself, still does NOT bring the total to 100%.
KingPoubar also proves his comment false.
So yeah, do you care to explain how you canceled me out again? This should be good!

How can anything I express as a feeling be untrustworthy? Are you honestly this stupid or do you just act this way to "get the girls?"

@Keith K - So then how is "Arm73" Defending the unjustifiable? If the 360 is worse off then....what? Everyone should just stop talking?
"The only benchmark that matters is attachment rate. Not Game attachment rate, but system attachment."
Then you prove yourself wrong right here. Nintendo has the highest rate of all three.
I would bet top dollar that MORE people have been burned by RRoD then people that have been burned by game disappointment from Nintendo.
By shear volume alone this Gen, the next Wii will do just fine. Winner or not, it'll do well.

The remotes see the sensor bar not the sensor bar sees the remotes. Dont believe me? Unplug your sensor bar and get two candles. everything will work fine. Your idea would not make a difference. The sensor bar is only for placing the cursor on the screen. The accelerometer does the rest when it comes to motion.

I really shouldn't have to say anything to show the sheer stupidity in what you just said, but just for good measure...How exactly does your having a 20 year old TV relate to the Wii having a remote controller (which by the way, every system has, so kudos on that one, asshat).
All I got out of your statement was that you're too poor to afford a new TV, meaning you clearly can't afford any video game consoles, so why are you posting here in the first place?? Ba-zing.

Tell me guys what's wrong with the Wii as it is now ?
You wanna know something ? I play very often 20+ years old MAME games and I enjoy them very much !
If you wouldn't be 12 years old fanboys(fan-girlishboys) then you would be an hardcore gamer who's been playing for over 20 years and knows what to look for in a video game.
I like games with good gameplay, I care for graphics to a certain extent( I must admit that today at least 480p and 16:9 is a must) but if I can enjoy Moon Patrol, why can't I enjoy a Wii game ? Plus I like Nintendo's games, I like Zelda, Mario, Metroid and also their way of making video games.
I recognize that Xbox360 and PS30 have better graphics, more processing power and a much needed hard disk, only I wouldn't buy them because the kind of games that's getting released doesn't appeal to me.
That's right, I know they are very good games but I don't like to play GTA or Metal Gear ( i got bored before I could finish MGS for PSone ), don't care for FF and absolutely hate to play FPS with an analog controller.
Am I guilty ? I enjoy the Wii, I am a working person and I don't have too much time to play, and I find that the Nintendo schedule is just right for my needs, I couldn't bare to play and finish 2 Mario Galaxy type of game a week because I wouldn't have time to sleep otherwise.....
The Wii doesn't even try to compete with the other so called next gen consoles, so why keep on complaining ?
Is it because the Wii is outselling the others ? Or because the majority of hardcore games love Nintendo ?
If all you can think of is strictly raw power system, can you explain to me why in 1989 the monochrome Game boy with an outdated Z80 processor was able to destroy the competition ( the likes of Lynx, Game Gear, Neo Geo Poket and many others ) even tough they had a colour/backlit display and much better specs ?
Oh yes, you can't because you wheren't even born, friggin 12 years old fanboys !
Every body at some point unsuccessfully tryed to imitate Ninendo, even every modern so called standard controller is based on the Snes pad and N64 analog controller ( which offered a rumble pack too as a first ).
No wonder MS is trying to go after the big N market by adding avatars and family friendly games.
If you don't respect Nintendo as a company that goes a long way back in the entertainment history , then you are a bunch of disrespectful loosers that obviously are too blind and stupid to admit when somebody is doing the right thing.
I like Xbox live and the PS3 ability to play BR movies, and I don't go around posting on their forums on how boring their games lineup is to me, why can't you just do the same ?
Don't like Nintendo ? Hate to hear good news and sales figure about Ninty ? Then it's easy, just stay away from this message boards and hang around more familiar places.

When 2D graphic reached its pick in mid 90s then they came up with 3D, which took us back quite a big step graphic quality wise, in fact early PSone games look terrible, with low resolution, low textures and badly designed poligon based characters.
Then they improved things with next gen and we saw some excellent graphic even on the PS2.
Personally on that generation of consoles I liked very much the smoothness of the Xbox graphic (which often had a steadier frame rate and more detailed graphic then the same games ported to/from PS2 ) but I stayed with Nintendo GC because I liked the controller plus there were some kick ass launch games that really made me want the system.
The point is from there on major console manufactures just aimed for even better graphic capability (unneeded if you ask me ) with higher resolution and more lighting effects.
Can you tell me where are we going with this ? Soon video games will look like movies or even better, but even movies can be bad, in fact there are a lot of crappy movies out there.
So people will judge a movie by its content, not by the speciall effects used in the shots * which are nice , but hardly make or brake an already good or bad movie ).
It's the same with video games, when will people stop asking for better graphic ?
Nintendo knows al that and that's why they went a different route this way around.
Many people stopped playing games after the 8-bit NES, probably because the controllers bacame to complex and gimmick for the average person to even think to touch.
Now with the Wii a gamer is finally no longer a geek, but it's some cool dude playing something fun with his friends.
You have no idea how grateful should the entire industry be grateful to Nintendo, even EA recently acknowledged that they under estimated Nintnedo and made a mistake by focusing on the other 2 systems out there in the past year and half.
The Wii is the leading platform in this console generation, get over it, it's a fact whether you like it or not.
Just sit back and relax and enjoy the show, none of the Nintendo fan boys will come hunt you in your living room to make fun of you and your console choices, they are too busy enjoying them self and their great system, whether they like old school games, or innovative puzzles or action games , the Wii has it all and it's only going to be better in the next couple of years, now that most game companies have realized how much potential does the platform offer.
Stop insulting Nintendo and its large crowd by calling them retards or gays or stupid just because you are jealous.
Enjoy your games instead, I will enjoy mines.

I have a buddy from Japan. His name is Chennai, but we call him Chin because we're American. I met on vacation in Japan along time ago. He works at a mechanic shop. His main partner is the son of a high-ranking hardware official for Nintendo, Inc who doesn't always keep his mouth shut. This is what I've been told:
- Ok it will not be called the Wii 2, mainly because the Wii itself is an actual test-product for the so called "ultimate gaming system" ever. Wii is just part of the full name of the next console. It's like a beta, but this beta isn't even half complete.
- The graphics will be dramatically improved but not in terms of what Sony and Microsoft are doing. It's more like representations and outlines of real objects. Somehow, someway, the user will interact with these objects. He didn’t say Holoscreen. That's way ahead of our time anyways. All I know is that it's going to be completely and fully interactive. Based on my own knowledge, I think Microsoft may be doing something in the same ball-park but not nearly the same bleachers. Peter Jacksons Halo project… it will apparently merge the line between movies and games: full interactivity. You all know that though.
- These consoles will not just be used for Nintendo products. Am I saying Sony and Microsoft? No way. But that’s not out of the question. I know that’s crazy but this is what I'm told. Their next console is “more than just a standard video game console that is in control by one end of the market.”
- The next console will be wireless, even the console. It will come with an AV/HD adapter but without wires (duh). I'm thinking this is farfetched because transferring high-def isn't exactly a walk in the park for even wires. Nintendo is apparently not only working on their console, but are doing modifications to use a higher resolution screen or other visual display device, but with less requirement.
- It will run on less power (watts) than even the Sega Dreamcast had ran on, and all consoles which came thereafter.
- It will be of the same color (mainly taking advantage of white, like apple sometimes does), have a far more sleek design. He said this man told him that the current specs for the console are not fully done but the design is finished. "It's far more intriguing than a box" (what Chin wrote in the email to me?)
- This console will allow you to play every single past Nintendo game for any console. It will have the same "suck-in" disc reader. There will be a way to copy your currently existing games (whether they are cartridges or discs) on to Nintendo's next console. Don't ask me, this is what he wrote, ok?
- Games for this next console will be released in hardware form as before, but almost half of game sales or as this man said: "expect games that are being developed or games that have been developed to appear in hardwareless form. It is unwise to say this so soon, but we believe that we will rely on online software sales just as much as we rely on the child in the market to buy our games. This isn't news obviously, but the fact that half its software sales will be from downloads? We're guessing their having some sort of new network, but also another way of accessing it. And from his words, he's talking about all games, massively large games-not just arcade titles like the live arcade.
- Apple is supposedly helping Nintendo's next console offer an entire online music network. It will use a form of iTunes called WiiTunes (not pronounced like the Wii is, but like "Wy" or like the "i" in "iTunes". So it's WiiTunes. After the Wii's time is over, it will be replaced by the new console name. As we said before, the actually word Wii is still a part of the next console. Think of it as the small end or beginning to a much more kickass word.
- Ok this is strange bu

As for the comments about the N64 vs PSX and so on, the N64 had twice the power of the PSX, no questions asked. Controllers, well, Nintendo came up with the analog stick and rumble and Sony just improved on it. When the PSX was first released, it was nothing but a souped up SNES with a disc drive and more comfortable controller with 2 extra buttons. (early models even had SNES slots in them) The only reason FFVII was on PSX was because of the disc based medium. There were tech demo's for the N64 that showcased what Square was planning for the next FF until they switched to PlayStation.
The GCN was superior to the PS2 in processing power and speed. Though Xbox had them both beat for that. The controllers are up to personal tastes. I like where they put the analog stick compared to the DS2, but the C stick and d-pad are bull*****. Though people who say the d-pad should be where the analog stick is are PS2 posers. Even the Xbox's controller took what was good from the Dreamcast controller and put the analog stick in it's rightful place.
Why would Wii need a dvd player? Seriously, if you don't have a dvd player already (at least 2) odds are you can't afford a Wii either...
Sure, the 360 and PS3 are both powerhouses and kick the crap out of the Wii for graphics. And you can now get a 360 for almost the same price as a Wii. Also, developers at this point are mostly pouring out shovelware like it's the NES days all over again. But then there are some jewels hidden in the swamp, like Zelda TP, Mario Galaxy, Metroid, Resident Evil 4, Manhunt 2, Smash Bros Brawl, and hopefully The Conduit lives up to expectations.
And I'll say it before anyone else does... Those are mostly first party titles and Wiimakes/ports of PS2 games. And The Conduit's not enough to hold the Wii up. But who knows? If it wasn't for a little game called Halo, I highly doubt the Xbox 360 would exist today. In it's current form anyway.
But yeah, I can't see Nintendo falling for a long while. What's the first thing that comes to your head when you hear Nintendo? Video games. What's the first thing that comes to your head when you hear Sony? Most likely tvs and dvd players. Microsoft? Windows. They survived for 2 decades and did more than Sega or Atari ever could. They're here for the long run for sure.

On the technological side the entire industry praised the VB. I attended the CES in which they revealed the unit. The demo's where awesome. But the demos where not production units..... that's where they failed.
The unit itself had the SAME problem that all other like technology had. It has to TRICK your eyes. The problem here is that our eyes and brain are smarter then we think. You can only trick them for so long. Prolonged use of the VB caused major problems for some people and slight problems for many others. Reports of headaches were off the charts!
The other problem with the unit is that because strain it causes on one's eyes the device was not recommended for anyone under the age of 7. That murdered a huge demographic. Add this reason with the reason above and what parent would let their 8 year old play it either? 9? 10?
Last, the production units had horrible stands. Most people were willing to deal with the above but once you add uncomfortable game play to the mix....that broke the camels back. These units weren't all that portable.
As for douche bag's comment on Yokoi. This comment of his only serves to prove that he's nothing but an ignorant little boy that knows NOTHING of business. First of all, nothing was rushed. Secondly, some mysterious entity known as Nintendo handled the project MORE then Yokoi? WRONG!!!!!!!! The entire project was Yokoi's responsibility and the VB cost Nintendo a LOT of money. Someone had to be held accountable and he LEFT the company. There is NO factual data to prove whether he left on his own or was fired.
Not to mention the unit, for what it was, was too expensive for most.
