We say you CAN make non-gamers into gamers

At least Old Grandma Hardcore is into gaming...The Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3. An analysis by Stan Beer over at iTWire says that the Wii doesn't have what it takes to attract middle-aged buyers, but Sony and Microsoft have it right. Why? Most middle-aged people are too busy "bringing up children."

So here comes Sony and Microsoft. They both know that middle-aged non-gamers don't want friendlier games or a cool Wiimote. What 30-something-year-olds want are "DVD players, internet connection, and video streaming." In other words, non-gamers want non-gaming things, and that makes sense.

QJ says you can! But we aren't absolutely comfortable with the analysis (it's good and you might want to read it because it makes you think, but one small indirect implication bothers us...). For example, the analysis almost means that if you're Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo and you want to attract non-gamer women, you shouldn't try to make women-friendly games. You should just pack up and sell cosmetics instead. And if you want to attract middle-aged non-gamers, you shouldn't even bother, because you're better off making making DVD players and garage door openers.

But our point is that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo would rather make gaming platforms. Yes, some platforms can play DVDs, but they're not really DVD players. They are still game platforms. And we thank the Lords of Gaming for that.

Sony's PS3 is getting screwed by the media because their platform's "too expensive" and "overheats" and is coming out "too late in the game." Microsoft's Xbox 360 is still getting screwed by the media over "hardware problems" and the fact that it's just "no longer popular." And Nintendo's Wii is just "a fad." But they're going to keep trying to market their game platforms, and they're going to keep pushing games to as many people as they can. Yes, you can make middle-aged people into DVD-buyers or internet-surfers, but the only way to make a gamer out of a non-gamer is through good games and good platforms.

» Nintendo's goal is to bring gaming to the "middle-aged!"

That is why they have the low price, "WiiMote," etc. I, however, do agree with the author of the analysis. More 'adult/non-gaming/entertainment' features have to be included such as movie playback, music, calander, planner book, and other things to attract the older buyers.

"Fad" is a lot older than you. Or I am. Or anyone living. Here, I'll help you out. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=fad

As for the article... Sony and MS have their heads stuck up their asses. They want to attract non-gamers, so they make their machine not a gaming machine. But they don't actually make their machine a decent ANYTHING. It sucks at DVDs, it sucks at internet, it just sucks.

If the PS3 is a SUPREMELY great "set-top box" for getting on the internet and does EVERYTHING a Windows PC can do as far as browsing, email, etc... It MIGHT attract a few old people with way, way too much money on their hands and HD TVs. Might. For $600, I can hook you up with a pretty freaking sweet PC. (And I'll still make a profit, too.)

The x360 doesn't have 'internet' abilities at all. No email, no web, nothing. Just gaming. So it's not even close to being in the 'non-gamer' category.

The Wii has it right. They have the best shot at getting non-gamers to play. If they can make games that people like my mother can't live without, and keep the price low enough (I think $250 is still way high for that crowd) then they could do it. If they want to watch DVDs, a GOOD dvd player is only $40 now. And if they want to get on the internet, a computer is WAY better for the task.

I'm talking games like Hexic and Bejeweled. She loves those on PC. But they'd have to be games more geared to the Wiimote control. The mouse works great for her, but a joypad wouldn't do.

A perfect game would be those search-and-find games that are on reflexive now, where they show a room with a TON of items and you have to find certain ones and click on them. The Wiimote would be a great interface.

i hate when 'analists' and the media make stupid guesses about things they know nothing about just to get some publicity. OMG! Joe Shmo says ps3 is gonna suck! he must be right! please.
