Jennifer Strange, courtesy of http://www.news10.net/display_story.aspx?storyid=23350 Expect someone to spin this to point all the blame towards videogames. A woman seems to have died of water intoxication after participating in a water-drinking contest sponsored by Sacramento radio station KDND-FM 107.9.

The contest, called "Hold your wee for a Wii", had participants drinking water every 15 minutes, with the winner being the one who could hold their bladder the longest. The winner would then win a Wii console. Jennifer Strange, one of the contestants, died a few hours later after calling her supervisor at work while driving home.

"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," said Laura Rios, one of her co-workers. "She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her." Strange was found in her home some time later, after one of her office's supervisors called her mother, prompting her to check on her daughter by visiting her residence.

For now, we have one of the early news clips that reports Strange's death. Checking our sourced link below should give you more information on what happened, and while it does seem as if KDND is to blame, there may still be other factors that contributed to it. Still, there was no doctor present during the contest and the report indicates that little warning was given about the dangers of water intoxication. We hope KDND does accept responsibility for what happened, and we also hope this doesn't become sensationalized like Connor O Keefe's death. Updated video with more details thanks to Aaron.

Jeez, i just read this and thought? hmm i wonder what causes water intoxication and so i did a google search and checked the wikipedia. This is already in there. Almost the exact same article, as a famous case of water intoxication death. Crazy....

» why is the radio station responsible

They never said she couldn't go to the bathroom, just that she wouldnt win the Wii if she did. She chose whether or not to forfeit. However bad I feel for her does not negate she is responsible for her actions.

» not enough warning about water intoxication

The radio station should be held responsible because they didnt tell the contestants about the dangers of drinking to much water, also they didnt even have paramedics on site.

It was a stupid contest, they should never have had it, drinking too much water causes your sodium levels to drop, just like drinking salt water causes your sodium levels to rise, any heavy change of your sodium is dangerous.

It didn't have anything to do with going to the bathroom, even if she did (which im sure she must've) it wouldn't have made any difference.

It only takes a gallon of water to kill some one, some times even less.

Did you know about water intoxication? If you had kids who really wanted the wii for x-mas, and you werent able to get one until march and told them that they would get it until then, then you saw this contest, and saw an opportunity to surprise them with it in the middle of Jan., would you have entered it? I bet you would, not even thinking about water intoxication.

» Agreed

People put the blame on everybody else in America. Bottom line, it is sad she died, but it is her fault. Nobody forced her to drink the water. It should be a pretty safe assumption that somebody would need to pee well before any medical issues arise. I am no doctor but I know what water intoxication is and know when enough is enough.

» Accept responsibility

The radio station is NOT to blame. And I am responding to "Pat". Uh no, a gallon of water does NOT kill you. I typically drink a gallon to a gallon and a half of water a day. I have never had any problem. Bottom line, there are warning signs. If she started feeling weird, she should stop. People need to quit suing just because something unfortunate happens. She should have stopped. She doesn't need someone to tell her drinking too much water could be dangerous. At least she shouldn't need someone to tell her that.

» wrong nate!

A person with two healthy kidneys can excrete about 900ml (0.24 gal)/hr[2]. Consuming as little as 1.8 litres of water (0.48 gal) in a single sitting may prove fatal for a person adhering to a low-sodium diet, or 3 litres (0.79 gallons) for a person on a normal diet.
