Warning: video games can make you insecure

Study: Gamers Self-Conscious To “Extreme” Body-Types - Image 1A study says that playing sexy video game characters can make gamers (both guys and gals) feel insecure about their body-image.

I assume this is the same brain fart that Shigeru Miyamoto got to inspire him to make the Wii.

The study showed that after playing video game characters with "extreme" body-types (muscular men, very thin women) for only 15 minutes, gamers have a negative impact on their looks and body.

The study had guys playing WWF Wrestemania 2000, while girls played a beach volleyball game. If guys can get insecure over beefy 64-bit dudes, I'd hate to imagine what the girls were feeling (especially if they were playing Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball).

Questionable methodology aside, I find this study... how should I say this... useless. Whether or not their findings are accurate, the same argument can be said about other forms of media. Porn pretty much has the same effect.

yep.

Any other media can do the same thing. What makes them realize this now? Just more fodder for the dumbass anti-video game groups out there.

That's why I only play games with titties. :3

I don't find watching a bunch of sweaty muscular men groping each other enjoyable. (I'm looking at you WWE fans).

oh yea...

Oh yes I'm SOOO Jealous of the body and masculinity Kratos has. And because of this, I eat a whole bunch of cake and Ice cream while be depressed.

Oh wait, that's right, game characters aren't real and games are totally unbelievable or unrealistic as people use. So yea, with that said, game characters don't give me body issues. They're just eye Candy to go along with the in depth storylines and graphics. Then again the media also is to blame.

The only difference between porn and games is, porn actually is real in the sense of the actors with those types of body parts. The only thing real on Video Game characters are the people voicing the them.

But by all means, lets waste money on useless research that we already knew awhile ago thanks to the media. I could think of better ways to use that money, maybe a cure for aids or cancer, but of course who'd want to do that.

by kaizoku - 2008-12-28 19:33
hmm?

aids is a problem? can we do more research on game facial gestures and what they mean? thanks! keep up the good work researchers! lol jk haha

true. lol

by jacobian91 - 2008-12-29 03:21
Actually

Porn stars aren't that real either.

I can't wait to see what these "researchers" say about fat princess.

"Fat Princess causes increase in national obesity percentage!!!"

lol

People are actually paid to study this?

Definitely more anti-video game propaganda here. Anything with hot women or muscular men will make the viewer insecure if it's something they want to be but aren't. Pornography videos and magazines, women's magazines like Cosmopolitan, and other similar media are probably among the top.

by solidus4prez - 2008-12-29 05:14
.

Seeing Old Snake made me feel insecure about how young I am.

That and he never got to bone Naomi.

8+D go to 8++++++++++++++ ++++D

by sesa - 2008-12-29 12:42
Six-Pack and Big Titted Gamers?

So according to study, because of those insecurities then most gamers have near-perfect bodies whether it's because frequent visits to gym, anorexia or Lypo.

Am I right?

by yoshi314 - 2008-12-29 21:15
i think he has a point

it's just that it does not apply to everyone. some people try to identify with their game/tv/movie idols too much and get disappointed when they compare movie reality to real life.

if you take games too seriously you might get into various complexes. same goes for girls(/guys?) who try to be as beautiful as photoshopped models in commercials/magazines.

that's what advertising has been doing to us for a while - selling us delusions, which we slowly started to take for granted.

porn

I just want to know what those guys eat to have *****s that scary.

by Dorkus-1983 - 2009-01-01 07:54
ok, are we done?

seems a lot of people here seem insecure about their body image, this jump was supposed to be dead since last week, its still on the top ten jumps.
