Wal-Mart jumps into used games biz

Looks like GameStop's got some competition in the used games business. Wal-Mart, which is one of the largest corporations in the world, has apparently started rolling out vending machines that lets gamers trade in their used PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, and Wii games for in-store credit.

NeoCrisis reports, however, that the machines are still very buggy. Of all the games they used to test the machine out, only one got scanned. The scanned game still wasn't accepted, though, as it was supposedly not in the machine's database.

Anybody out there seen these machines? I haven't so I'm still wondering how the whole trade-in process goes.

» Interact with humans? Nonsense!

Yeah.. no. Those machines will be easily exploited sooner or later.

» how so?

they have vending machines for things like ipods and rental movies, why can't this be used as welcome. It's time we start moving forward.

» *used as well

» GameStop is to blame

Every time they go over the quarterly earnings with the managers they always have something to say about wal-mart, and how our numbers compare.

I honestly think that this is going to pull a noticeable chunk of business from GameStop (If the machines ever work correctly)

I honestly don't even think that Wal-mart needs to sell back the games they take in trade and they will be making money on this. So many people shop at wal-mart that with a few well placed signs and adverts people will simply not make the extra trip to GameStop to do the same thing. (especially with kids in tow.)

GameStop poked and prodded the sleeping bear and now they are going to have to watch as that same bear rips a sizable chunk out of them.

» Great

I got a few crappy games to get rid of. hopefully this thing will burn them up

» HEHEHEHE

Am I an evil to think that scanning in a newer game and then slipping in some bargain bin crap is in store?

» Not To Mention

At least at Gamestop, and like stores, they check for scratches and stuff. Here, there's no way for them to even tell that there's a disc in the box...heck, there's no way to tell if there's even a box. This'll last MAYBE half a year.

» Well..

You're purchasing/renting something rather than giving something. I once got a burned DVD of a movie from the red box. I wouldn't doubt sooner or later someone will do something like that for 'free' store credit.

» what the heck...

are you talking about? "I honestly don't even think that Wal-mart needs to sell back the games they take in trade and they will be making money on this" do you not understand the business of trading and selling used? its Pure profit for the corporation. because giving the store credit or cash is like a mini investment in which they pay for. then people come in and buy a used game and say gamestop paid 15 dollars and they sold it at 55. they just made 40 dollars in pure profit. vs new sales they have to pay back companies and give them there share. i feel that in all reality, theres no threat to gamestop. people will always be willing to trade there games even for 50 cents...

this is pretty dumb... but even if it fails, Walmart will not suffer I'm sure... They probably don't care either way. It's just another ploy to get ppl to shop there. They already have cheap snacks, cheap clothes, cheap office supplies...

I would just like to stick a backup disc in there, for kicks... However, I wouldn't want to explain to the nice officer what I did.

» I assume:

There is a slot to put cd's in. They must scan the disk and compare it to an iso. I am thinking they could not use a full iso as that would be illegal for them to store... must just have a hash code they compare it against. The case goes in the box to the side. Since they are also not giving cash - but store credit, I assume when they review the days trades they can cancel any false ones. I can see this working.

» Interesting

I hate Gamestop and do a lot of my game stuff at Gamecrazy if it involves used stuff unless I have to go to Gamestop lol. If Walmart can pull this off right then it'll be something I'll utilize for sure just to avoid the alternative. I just wish there was a human alternative. Machines like this are prone to bugs and bound to be exploited in some way.

Of course I do. I am a third key at Gamestop. What I was trying to say was that it being wal-mart, will turn a profit simply taking games in for store credit and recycling whatever they take in. They don't need to re-sell them to make money. (though I know they will).

Apparently my sarcasm is either horrible, or so good it is taken as face value.

Burn em all!

» Weird

I like the idea of the trade-in process being automated. I can't stand talking to Gamestop employees, they're usually *****y bastards.

However, what's to stop people from putting completely scratched and f'ed up games in there? Do you still get credit? Does the machine actually judge the quality of the disc?

I'll stick to buying games as cheap as possible on eBay, thank you very much.
