Videogame may help detect depression: cheer up emo boy |

New Scientist Tech informs that Neda Gould of the US National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland, and her colleagues have considered the use of a Duke Nukem inspired videogame to measure the severity of depression. The basis for this is that depression has been linked to a shrunken hippocampus, a region of the brain that plays a role in spatial memory. The idea is that if they get a videogame that can test spatial memory, they will be able to measure the severity of depression.
They used a videogame that was developed based on some scenes from Duke Nukem.
Participants of the test were asked to navigate through a virtual town and find their way to as many landmarks as possible within a set amount of time. It was found that depressed people found their way to an average of 2.4 locations compares with 3.8 locations for healthy controls. It was found that the more depressed a person was, the lower the score would be.
Gould hopes that the test may eventually be able to provide a quantifiable measure of depression.
Always finding yourself lost in Saint's Row or GTA? Cheer up emo boy.

Depression is an illness that's certainly not funny, emo is a style choice.

Sure, depression itself isn't funny, but it's no illness. It's like when people claim being an Alcoholic or being Obese is an illness. You can't catch depression. You can't get infected with depression.
Whatever, I'm probably going to get flamed like crazy for this post, but thats my opinion.

I'll agree about the alcoholism thing and mostly about the obesity part, a lot of people are fat because they don't wanna get up and excercise (and don't say that isn't true, I was like that).
However, there is a gene that can possibly be to blame (in SOME people), it's one that makes a person not feel full even when they are, so it's difficult for them to stop eating.

2. Emo is certainly not something that is related to depression. It is a lifestyle, nothing more nothing less. Some emo's (where the stereotype comes from) are confused with being depressed but are usually just attention seeking.
3. Emo boy! Do girls not play videogames? Do girls not get depressed?
Some of the QJ writers (Ian C in particular) should stop and think before writing. He obviously doesn't know that emo stand for emotional. Happiness is an emotion but if he was writing about something happy I'm certain he would not have said anything about being emo.
Ian C you're a moron, I can't believe you are being paid to make fun of a stupid stereotype and a disease.

And don't bother saying that "OMGWTFBBQ NO WAY YOU MUSTNT LAUGH ABOUT DEPRESSION"... Yes, it's possible to laugh about it, just like everything else. That emo boy joke was pretty funny, actually, although I'm kinda tired of the current "emo" trend!
I don't read qj comments very often, but I'm always surprised (or even "shocked") to see people insulting the authors of the articles, or saying the articles (and the authors) are crappy / useless / stupid / boring... Well guys, I've got one thing to say : if you don't like the articles or their authors, DON'T *****ING READ THEM. Nobody forces you to come to this site and read the articles, right?
