VC's Wave Race 64 now featuring Nintendo ads

Guys who just got their copy of Wave Race 64 on their Wii's Virtual Console may want to take a closer look at the scenery for a bit of Nintendo-style guerrilla marketing.  Screenshots taken of the game indicate that the big "N" has done some reworking on the title's ROM, and revamped some in-game ads to promote their Wii and DS (screenshots via Siliconera):

As this demonstrates that Nintendo can alter a game's data if they will it, it does pose some interesting speculation on future possibilities. For one, what's stopping the company from re-releasing an otherwise Japanese game into a English-translated port? Most tempting.

On a parting note, this author does find one thing strange: while it's understandable that Nintendo posted a DS ad to promote their portable, it seems pretty redundant for them to post a Wii ad as well. After all, by playing the game, it's already implied that the guy already has a Wii console.

The ads have better graphics than the VC N64 game. That funny.

» Wow. That is odd.

What is next, Nintendo ads in Zelda or Metroid?

This means they CAN change vc games! This could potentially mean new content or secret areas in old school games!

Of course they can change old games, they never delete the source to something they make.

I think they placed those adds to cover the Kawasaki banners. The original game had Kawasaki and JetSki banners, as well as on the vehicles. Maybe Nintendo did/could not get the license again?

They've deleted some content from old games; like the secret passwords in Kid Icarus (land I can't even beat the first level anyway).

Sure it makes for some good advertising but this is just a case of losing the licensing for the original advertising in the background. If I remember correctly there were Kawasaki ads plastered on the sides on the old cartridge. It's not like Nintendo is just randomly placing ads in a 10 year old game. There is a reason guys.
