*UPDATE* Xbox Linux team member claims Wii already hacked. Now with video!

Snapped, Crackled, and waiting for the final pop.Achtung! claims Michael Stiel of the Xbox Linux team, during the Chaos Communications Congress in Berlin, "the Wii is the perfect goal for hackers." The gist of his speech is that the Wii is perfectly hackable because of its backwards-compatibility with the Gamecube. As such, the Wii has inherited a couple of hacks from its predecessor.

For example, a variant of the Action Replay hack works with the Wii. Hackers also found a back door in, well, as Google Translate goes, "With the interface, over which the DVD drive assembly with the core of the Gamecube communicates." This probably refers to the interface between the DVD drive and the legacy Gamecube parts or code, or so says another participant in the Chaos Comm. Congress, Felix Domke. The most successful hack for the Wii, he says, is one similar to the DVD firmware hack on the Xbox 360.

Speaking of which: compared to the Wii, the 360 is in fact a harder nut to hack. And the PS3? That's a different story, says Domke. His opinion is that Sony has provided a "compromise" to hackers by offering Linux capability in the box. On the other hand, it didn't stop some people looking for exploits...

UPDATE: Guess what we found on the Tube of You (as Borat might put it)? It's a video, it seems, of a presentation during the Chaos Communications Congress, explaining comparisons between GameCube and Wii, and theories on DVD security and hacking.

» Felix Domke is a GOD :)

..but I'm not sure if I want the wii to be hacked. It's somehow a new experience to for example xbox. and in my opinion pirated games would destroy everything. But if they would find an homebrew only exploit it would be great :)

» hahahah

what about the ps3 , it was just about to say it . unless ps3 can run wiii games, hahahah. wii is just gamecube, get over it. its really 1.5 wii.

» Bad news

This is actually pretty bad news, funny as hell too. Was Nintendo really this stupid when it comes to security? I can say that within the next few months mod chips will be out (Similar to the GC one that he talked about for the BD 2 exploit) and once that happens, Wii games can EASILY be pirated. This is potentially a death sentence for Nintendo unless they start making some revisions. Why you might ask? One of Nintendo’s major flaws last gen was lack of 3rd party developer support. This round, they have a bit more, but it’s still lacking. If they don’t patch this, they might lose the majority of support ( a la Dreamcast).

I’m not being pessimistic here, only realistic. I think the wii is great, but its lasting favor is questionable right now, and without some serious damage control, this console could go down.

» Engrish

The dude in the video needs to speak some *****ing English, pronto. I can't stand people who think they can get by bull*****ting the English language with gibberish. I'm not being ignorant, but learn the *****ing language or be stupid. Don't pull half-assed attempts and do any form of speaking.

What?

by Anonymous - 2006-12-29 18:07
» Its harder than it looks

You try learning another language and see how well you speak it. its hard to adjust how you speak because your used to speaking in one language. For example, try rolling the "r" sound like in spanish or say the whole japanese alphabet(hiraga na/katakana?) properly.

lmfao instead of working on hacking systems, learn some english

» Geez!

It is not game cube, you fool! It is somewhat like gamecube but in the big way..it is a brand new Wii system.

I think it's fake or something. I don't know and I do not care.

» english is fine

I thought his english was fine. When you speak with a ccent its hard to pronounce things the way we do. all this good news and people pick at his accent. *****ing retards.

by nightshade15 - 2006-12-29 19:15
» Well

Sandman, Wii IS directed towards more abroad people, which completely and uttly outnumbers the Hacker/Pirate Community, I wouldn't be TOO worried unless someone figured out a device that could attack the Wii from an SD card and re-write the firmware and access any copied DVD of the game, it might be alittle more accessable to the non-tech ediquate. We'll see, We'll see.

My god. You understood him didn't you?

Idiots like you shouldn't be able to watch those fabulous videos.

by Jack - 2006-12-29 23:33
» Fair point.

But.... What you are forgetting here is that to dump Wii games to an ISO you need hacked firmware in your PC DVD drive. This would mean that all pirated games would have to be torrented. So far there is only 1 Wii game being actively torrented and it was released weeks ago. There have been none since.

» German accents

I'm a Swede and I understand both English and German, which is sweet.

And by the way, the guy in the video had an awesome accent, I really like that English accent, it sounds neat and scientific.

But to get on topic;

That is pretty awesome stuff right there, but I always had a premonition that Nintendo would do precisely the same thing that they did with GameCube on the Wii and hoped for the hack-breakthrough to happen rather quick, and it seems I was right.

by Sandman - 2006-12-30 03:49
» Not really

You guys seem to be forgetting the real point though, this is a MAJOR security hole that is nearly as big as the one that was on the dreamcast. To make this work you could just download and burn a game, forget about actually owning it. That is where the problem is. The sheer fact that ANY game on the wii could be downloaded and burned and be playable as well as ANY GC game is a very bad thing and takes very little effort on the part of the hacker.

by sosbojam - 2006-12-30 05:01

He probably thinks that American + English too.

» he speaks better english then I do german

for all the wackos *****ing about the accent.

1) English is a GERMANIC language its origins originated in german.

2) can you speak German better then he speaks english?

3) english IS probably the most international language. but i bet more people speak chinese or a chinese dialect

4) I can understand it just fine

5) its you dumb asses who are causing god damned everything to have subtitles even when it IS IN ENGLISH.

6) stop making posts competely off topic (unless you are me and making this post)

» I lol'd.

Wow, Nintendo. Nice security. The GC had an authentication bypass password, and it was discovered, so they made it lower-case. I applaud you for your idiocy :)

i don't think that it's that bad , if the wii is hacked.

didn't the fact that you could easily copy ps1 games made the console successful?

i copy games but i also buy them and not everyone is able to copy games because it needs technical knowledge. maybe they sell a bit less games but it won't be critical for the wii.

btw i'm from germany and i think his accent is really funny because he pronounced every word the way it would be pronounced in german. that's not how we are taught to speak english, we learn british and american accents in school.

but to claude, like the others said, talk a foreign language better then he does before you offend him

by man - 2006-12-30 13:44
» It's quite good information.

I can't wait when chip or firmware mod will come to Wii. The reason is simple:

1. Run backup copies of my games.

2. Get rid of game regionalization - I'm gonna import Trauma Center right away to play it on my PAL system :)

» hmmm

you guys are tards, this is about the wii and most of you are analyzing the guys accents and who speaks better this and that. haha. well i dont know if this is good or bad for the wii. i just want it to do good. i mean itd be sweet to have homebrew and backup your games and all but if its gonna lead to some downfall of nintendo then eff that.

by Anonymous Coward - 2007-01-29 10:16
» hmm

stfu, felix domke is a well-respected hacker from the CCC, and that is a very cool organisation in germany. so don't be so ignorant, it's the knowledge not the accent that counts, btw i'm from germany, too, and speak flawlessly.

motherf***ers!

nice going, big N, now you're f***ed!
