Wii Menu - Image 1Attention all Nintendo Wii owners! The latest system update for your game console is up and ready for download. As expected,  it gives users the ability to give downloaded Virtual Console games as gifts for friends.

Not a whole lot has been noticeable in terms of changes. We'll go mess around with our unit until the changelog hits town.

One note, though. Some people from the NeoGAF forums are claiming that updating the Photo Channel will render you unable to play your MP3 files, so be careful. The complete changelog isn't out just yet so stay with us for the update.

UPDATE: The official website of Nintendo has finally been updated with a changelog for the latest firmware that went live just a couple of hours ago. The changes are as follows:
  • Gift Feature in Wii Shop Channel: What do you give the Wii Friend who has everything? How about a Virtual Console game or WiiWare software! With this new feature of the Wii Shop Channel, you can now spend your Wii Shop points on a Wii Shop item that you can have sent to a friend.
  • Photo Channel 1.1: Personalize the Photo Channel icon on your Wii menu, and replace MP3 music file support for AAC compatibility
The second one, now, provides the explanation why Nintendo Wii owners who downloaded the update couldn't play their MP3 files.

Great job Nintendo!

Take away useful features like mp3 playback and add useless features like giving virtual console games! It is useful to Nintendo, however, because it helps them make more money. Do your friends a favor and give them a gift certificate or something. Oh yeah you can change the photo channel icon, a very useful feature with limitless possibilities. Nintendo is leading the way to innovation!

i can't wait to update

Mister Common Sense Gay Lover is right aac is a way better format then mp3

sure, but

It's funny how they can't support both. You know, like the other consoles. I've never seen an update remove features before. It also requires you to re-encode all your mp3 songs. I know this is an inconvience to you, but you would never admit that would you?
by demondirk - 2007-12-11 06:41:18
it's a semi inconvience

but its worth it i'm a man who like good sound output and it doesn't even take that long to convert it

that will be cool....

Im gonna go home and get that update! and oh yeah the only correct thing u stated was ur last sentence........
by CSFFlame - 2007-12-11 14:59:55
stupid

reencoding makes it sound worse unless you have a lossless source (like the CD). It won't sound better

Just don't upgrade, you have a choice

I don't see why people are complaning about this, you don't even HAVE to upgrade your photo channel. I'm not......

common sense-less

Its not stupid if people are going to use it.

CSFFlame your wrong

aac format is a better format and converting it to that does not i repeat does not degrade the sound the crator of the mp3 format said "the AAC is the true Successor to MP3"
by demondirk - 2007-12-12 10:15:35
AAC is Better

Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) is a standardized, lossy compression and encoding scheme for digital audio. AAC is promoted as the successor to the MP3 format by MP3%u2019s creator, Fraunhofer IIS. anymore question if this isn't it enough here more AAC achieves better sound quality than MP3 at the same bitrate

You can "downgrade"

Just delete the photo channel in Wii Settings>Data Management>Channels, and it'll be reverted back to the original. That is, if you got your wii before December of this year.
