*UPDATE* FYI for Wii WiFi: you don't need Nintendo dongles

Datel's WiFi dongle. Not everyone knows these little tidbits about compatibility. Instead of shelling out extra cash to buy new equipment to augment your consoles and handhelds, you can always try recycling your equipment for use in other situations.

Take this neat little trick. Say you own a PSP and a Datel Wifi Max dongle for it, and you bought yourself a Wii. Now you want to use it to go online and look for old games. What would you do?

Under normal circumstances, your first step in trying to connect your Wii to the internet would be to rush out and buy the necessary equipment to get you up and running for online Wii use, either from Nintendo, Datel, or some other company. If you had a DS, then you might even remember our earlier tip on using the DS' WiFi dongle to hook your comp up to the internet. Well, you can skip both those ideas if you have neither, because Raven from Wii's R Us tried using his WiFi Max for the PSP with the Wii, and it works.

Here are his directions:
  • Grab your WiFi Max.
  • Install the software and choose DS Wifi (may work with PSP, I didnÂ’t try it).
  • Install the Dongle Driver.
  • Switch on your Wii.
  • Go to settings -> Internet.
  • Search for your connection.
Well, you just saved 30 bucks or more just by recycling your stuff. Now you can use that cash to buy even more games for your console. Enjoy!

Thanks to RL for the tip!

UPDATE:
It's nice to see what happens when you ask nicely. For the benefit of those who aren't sure what to do, Hman posted a tutorial of how he got his WiFi on. He also lists his basic connection and OS specs and is willing to help people out if need be. Just remember to be descriptive with your explanation and problem, and he'll get back to you.

I have my Wii set up using a Datel's PSP WifiMax. Works great. Just set it up for PSP, set to Access Point (I have it set to Chanel 11, not sure if that'll make any difference), give it an SSID, turn on sharing for your broadband connection, then search for the access point from your Wii.

At first my Wii wouldn't find the Wifi dongle, but I manually entered my SSID into the Wii and it picked it up fine, and works great.

Just some FYI.

If you've got a video, why not make a tutorial? We'd love to see what you did to get it to work. :)

I alctually own a DS, PSP and a Wii and I have a wifi connection for them, WITHOUT ANY DONGLE.

I just used my psp to check out if there was somekind of wireless internett (I think it's my neighbours :P ). Then I tried to connect to them and after a few basis passwords I tried the password 'internet' and voila: I was connected!

Now all my portables and my Wii connect to the internet using this wireless network!

Costs: $ 0.00

Loempia, you can actually get in to pretty serious trouble depending on your country for "breaking in" to someones network.

I have mine check to see if there are any unauthorised machines using my connection. Now, with a password like "internet" I'm sure they probably don't have a clue other people can even use their net but do be aware and would you like people using your connection without asking?

# I know it isn't decentGuest 2007-01-14 00:43
I know it isn't decent what I 'steal' the internet of my neighbours, but espacially for the low data applications like browsing the internet on your portables and getting the weather on my wii it's ideal: it doesn's uses a lot of his bandwith. If it were me I wouldn't mind. I'm actually thinking about getting a Wifi PCI card or a cheap USB dongle: but there is no way I'm gonna buy the official stuff put on shelves to be used with the NDS/PSP/Wii. It's really a waste of money: you can get the same hardware for half the price.

The only thing is: it a little harder to set up.

# Hack Nintendo's dongleGuest 2007-01-14 06:58
Well Datels Wi-fi does not come WEP enabled so why not just hack the Nintendo DS Wi-Fi Adapter to work with all wireless products? And then it is passwordable.

Nintendo's Wi-Fi then works with Wii/360/Laptop/Anything with wireless.
