Ubisoft responds to criticisms from Wii gamers

Wii - Image 1Game developer and publisher Ubisoft was met with a lot of criticism after the announcement of their games lineup for the Nintendo Wii during the recent Ubidays event.

Wii owners mostly reacted negatively to the glut of upcoming casual-themed games from Ubisoft. Members on the official Ubisoft forum harshly criticized the company for the lack of quality control and accusing Ubisoft of breaking its own promise of "significantly better" Wii projects.

In response to the criticism, Raide, the manager of the company's official UK forums, posited that family oriented games - in other words, titles labeled as "casual" - comprise the majority of the more successful Wii games compared to AAA titles:

Trends are changing and not everyone wants a new action game, FPS game or epic RPG, sales of the Wii proves that the majority want something different.

Parents who are buying a console for their children do not really care about Prince of Persia, Rainbow Six or Far Cry on the box, they want games that are going to be good for their children and not get them in the local newspaper. Why else would games like Brain Training/Wii Fit/Mario Party sell in the millions if people wanted hardcore games?

Raide also responded to the criticisms leveled against the Wii version of Shaun White Snowboarding, saying that "to damn a game just because of looks, and without actually playing it is just silly".

Just get an Xbox and shut the hell up! The Wii is not for you! Regardless of what some clueless tart at Nintendo of America wants you to think.

If you want hardcore games, get a hardcore system and shut the hell up. This is not Ubisoft's fault. Its yours!

Well I agree with your comment but I think the reason you had 0 stars on it is because you didn't include PS3. QJ posters don't like fanboy'ism...

If someone wants a great one player, no movement, serious game you'll only find a handful on the Wii and then it's like "nothing to see here folks" and you'll want your 360/PS3/PS2 for all the other games you missed out on like Bioshock, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and of course everyone's favorite game right now: GTA IV...

If it makes you feel any better, I dont own an Xbox, I have a PS3. But I cant recommend it over an Xbox. Unless you're bat***** loco about MGS, what does PS3 offer over Xbox?

Xbox gives hardcore gamers everything they can ask for: INCLUDING RPGS!!!!!!, PS3 simply doesnt.

"This is not Ubisoft's fault"

Yes it is!!! they choose to make their crappy games for the non gamers.

They need to realise that the Wii also has a hardcore market.

There have been great games released for hardcore gamers like Super Mario Galaxy,Zelda:TP ,

Okami,Metroid Prime 3, SSBB etc

Ubisoft made there half fleshed attempt at Red Steel which had so much potenial but Ubi runied it.

Game developers like High Volatage software are listning to the hard core crowd and making their own exlusive game.

It down to the game developers wether they want to take the easy route and make a crappy games such as Dogz or Catz which millions of kids will buy

because they dont know any better or take the harder way and risk to make a great game which if it is good will sell millions.

I fail to see how any else can be blamed than the game developers.

Wow, that guy is seriously full of $hit... This simple phrase sums it up :

"they want games that are going to be good for their children and not get them in the local newspaper."

First he pretends that his crappy casual games are "good for children", which is already pure bull$hit... But then he also implies that "hardcore" (ie real) games make kids turn bad... Seriously, coming from a guy in the video game industry, this is absolutely unacceptable. There's already enough cr@p that's said against video games from people outside the industry...

And all in all, this guy only tries to hide the obvious truth... He makes "casual games" because they're cheap and fast to produce, and they *might* sell more because there are more "casual players"... And anyway even if they don't sell many copies, the cheap games are quickly profitable...

Basically, he tries to hide his company's greed behind stupid excuses like "our games are good for children" and "hardcore games turn kids into gangstas". Way to go, dip$hit...

I agree with the direction but not the reasoning. Maybe this guy spoke out of line? After all he is ONLY a "forum manger". I would hardly call this "UBISOFT Responds".

Based on facts, it would seem there are more casual gamers then "hardcore" gamers. Especially if you consider all those who are BOTH!

So, why not cater to casual games? It's their company, their choice. Sounds like a wise one to me. Although catering 80% casual and 20% hardcore (or similar ratio) seems more wise...

There is a distinct market for casual games in today's world...there always has been. Most of the people who complain about the lack of "hardcore" games forget that they grew up with these games. People can scream about Metroid Prime 3, Zelda Twilight Princess, Super Mario and the like all they want, calling them "hardcore" titles, but they forget that those games didn't start out hardcore, they were casual games made for children. The market for children's games has never gone away, because, well...we keep squeezing out children, don't we? But games have been growing up with us, and that's fine. But I don't want my six year old playing a Grand Theft Auto game, I'd rather they play something a bit more wholesome. So, frankly, I'm really glad to see the "casual" market making a resurgence. Now, all we need is weekday broadcast cartoons to come back...

But, at the same time, I want to see more focus put on "hardcore" titles for the Wii. I really enjoyed playing Metroid Prime 3 with the wiimote and nunchuk. After that, I never want to play an FPS with a Dual/Axis or X360 style controller again. I really like the Wii control scheme, personally, and crave the day that us gamers of a more hardcore bent get a little more focus.

Balance, in all things, is key, after all.

You have the refresh the page after you post then the formatting will be correct.

QJ still has a LOT of bugs to fix that they probably never will.
