Tretton warns that Wii may be a fad, and investment there may yield a high price |
Ó
In a recent interview, Sony bigwig Jack Tretton shared his thoughts on the success of the Nintendo Wii and gave some comments on the subject of developers and publishers investing corporate resources on the hottest-selling console to date.Tretton pointed out that the Wii may be a fad that could fizzle out in time, leaving investors out in the cold. To illustrate his point, Tretton came up with this interesting analogy:
We have seen it time and time again. Tomb Raider was a revolutionary product on the PlayStation. Everyone tried to do a rip off. By the time they got there, it was too late. When Grand Theft Auto came out, everybody gravitated to Grand Theft Auto. Now the Wii is having success. They are touting casual gaming. Supposedly everybody is going to race over to casual games. The unfortunate thing is the fruits of those labors will show up two years down the road, and if the consumer tastes shift, they will find themselves all dressed up with no place to go.
Tretton then continued referring to the Wii as he explained that technology, in his 21 years in the business, has never stopped or taken a step back. "From the Atari to the NES to the Super NES, the technology got better. The graphics got better. The game play got more immersive," he says.
However, Tretton did concede the success of Nintendo's platform and said that the Wii has a market entirely its own and that comparing how Sony does business with how Nintendo does it is a bit difficult. "I made a comment in one interview that comparing us to Nintendo is like comparing us to Nike," he recalls. "We are more divergent than we have ever been. We have different views on how to approach the consumer for the long term."
Along with these points, Tretton answered a slew of other interesting queries. If you want to read the full length of the interview, simply follow the read link posted below.

ALL HAIL KING JACK!!!!!!!!!!! !! HE IS GOD YOU ARE HIS *****. JACK 4 PRESIDENT!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!
of course a sony executive would say something like this. but just look at the sales.........
I have friends that own a wii and a 360 and they say they get bored of the wii fairly quickly, ranging from days to 3 weeks. Right now, not a lot of titles for the wii appeals to me except Resident Evil 4. I also think the Wii Zapper looks lame, come on no iron sights like the GunCon?
the location on the TV and where you are pointing the gun is different. even being able to "calibrate" it you still have a good margin of error. so adding a sight would be useless, thats why they have the aim curser so that removes the need.
I've had a wii since launch and have not even played with it for over 3 months and that was after I beat Zelda:TP, and really the games the wii currently have are mini games, the wii infact reminds me of an arcade machine, you a have a burst of fun and then your done with it until you need another quick fix, as for some serious play time then their is simply no other real option other than a PS3/PS2 and 360.
i laugh at people that buy that crappy wii
Wii is a fad. I claimed it for months even tho I own one.
So far the Jackie Tretton boy seems to have his head on straight. Real straight shooter. Keep it up Sony.
PS. I'm a self-professed Sony Whore. Any company that gets behind making games like Shadow of the Colossus is the best in my books.
Anyone else agree that Sony always seems to be willing to take a gamble on artsy stuff like that?
I've owned a Wii since the month after they came out. I haven't picked the wii-mote up since May. I just bought a PS3 yesterday and I'm only keeping the Wii around for Smash Bros Brawl. Metroid not having multi player at all completely turned me off to the idea of a decent FPS on the Wii for this year. Maybe next year.
Ofcourse a wii owner would say that, they aren't busy playing any decent games.
I bought a wii the second week it was out, sold it in January because all it was doing was sitting on my entertainment center next to my Ps2. Still haven't gotten a new console since, i like my ps2 just fine till i see some decent games for Ps3. As far as the wii decent games go, i don't see any in the future that look very interesting.
madden, no more heroes, medal of honor, mario strikers, mario galaxy, red steel, trama center, resedent evil, zelda... You guys arent looking hard enough... XD
Also metroid and smash bros
The Wii isn't a fad it is the greatest thing to be released since the Mighty 360!!!
I get off off my fanboyism!!
I gotta say the Wii has been a huge let down for me thus far. I own only one game, Zelda:TP which was great but it's the only game that any good on the system. I had metal slug but that got traded in after only a few days. Nintendo really needs to get their ***** together cause i don't see anything on the system worth getting now or in the future. Really sucks cause i was looking for Nintendo to deliver this time around.

fads ..yeah ..sure
he does have a point about comparing the wii to ps3 is like comparing them to Nike. The wii was meant for immediate boost while the ps3 just like its predecessors was meant for mean for the future.
So he does make valid points. Besides the wii being a fad is a possibility. I mean look what Nintendo has been advertising these last few weeks and month Wii fit etc i mean the games coming out for it won't be here til October. Also the wii is definitely going off in other area's besides casual games to get non gamers to by them, like Wii fit, Wii yoga etc.
nintendo,360,the ps3. who cares what is what to the market. I like me consoles because of what they are to me. On the wii, I like the virtual console. On the 360. you cant beat x-box live. on the ps3.. well its got a lot of promise.
I like all three of them, I have two of them now. and i'll get a ps3 as soon as something worth playing comes out.
None of the games you listed were hardcore.
The ones that come close exist in better forms on better systems
do NOT mention medal of honor and madden when saying the wii has game. They don't count because they both look WORLDS better than anything the wii can poop out and have better, more responsive controls on other systems.
pwnt.
wtf? Smash Bros, Metroid, Red Steel, Resident Evil, No More Heroes, Zelda, and Trama Center are not hard core?
i laugh at this bull, expecialy the guy above not being able to spell pwnd. the wii is experiencing a definate drought right now, but if u ******* think that there arnt any hardcore games comming out this year, then you don't even know what a hardcore game is!, you know bull **** when it comes to what games are comming out for wii, so shut the **** up!
Anybody that thinks wii games are "hardcore" thinks Harry Potter is a hardcore action flick.
Anyone who can deny that nintendo knows how to make a quality product, hasnt been keeping up with the secene long enough.
how many nentendo products have you ever had to send in to be fixed?
Nintendo may have a soft cute image. But the mane some of the best games and most quality hardware. And if someone is unable to see that. the only reasons must be blind fanboyisim,
And anyone not immature enough to accept people like other consoles ,a nd that Metroid is not hardcore should stop watching teletubbies and otehr kids shows and grow up.
Of course a PS3 owner would say that, nor are they. Both systems lack the game quality and selection of the XBOX 360.
The 360 has an over-abundance of fps's... so to keep the chain going... of course a 360 owner would say that. None of the consoles have games that keep me playing... tired of fanboys saying which one is better... unless you're a mouth breathing hick who buys every year's new football game, then we're out of luck until the holiday season draws closer.
I've noticed that on occasion, but you're probably not standing far enough from the TV, and make sure you're not at an angle. I used to have problems, but as long as I'm six feet from the TV my aim's always pretty accurate, though it's never going to be perfect since the sensor bar isn't directly synched to the TV.
How many Sony products as well. It definietely not as much as xbox these days.
