Thirty-dollar Wii: dubious, but interesting

An even cheaper Wii? - Image 1 According to one story that's making the rounds on Digg, one lucky and quick-thinking couple managed to snag a Wii for only US$ 30. If you're thinking, "Shenanigans!" then trust when we say we feel the same. Still, entering a Wal-Mart and getting a manager to fess up to an oddly-priced Wii without resorting to violence deserves some recognition, just in case it's true.

BrokenWear's tale on the TribalWar forums states that he and his wife went to Wal-Mart to go and buy a Wii. They noticed, however, that Wii seemed to have been placed in the US$ 29.96 area. He says that when an item is sitting in the wrong spot in Wal-Mart, you can actually pick up the said item for the wrong price.

His story continues thus:

It was sitting in a US$ 29.96 price spot, and not just one of them. All 7 were in the wrong spot, so with a little quick thinking, i snapped a quick cellphone picture and had my wife call the home office. She called them and they called the store manager, and 20 minutes later we were leaving with a $30.00 Wii.

Some commenters on the original forum post were debating the truth behind this, especially since the receipt picture can't be accessed at the moment. We ourselves can't hold a copy of the pic, so if you've seen it, let us know. That being said, do you think it's the truth, or a well-made lie?

that's sweet. i wish something like that would happen to me. i already have a wii, just bought it last night. hope that happens to me with a ps3 though, that would be sick. the only time that's ever happen to me with something was when i was little, buying a like 50 or 60 power rangers mega zord set for like 10 bucks or something, i don't really remember.

If that is true, I might try moving expensive items to the checkout lanes. 50c LCD TV anyone?

Well ive been working at wal mart here in canada montreal and i can say.. Yes it is possible... When there is 1 product on a 5$ then it is sayd that it cannot be sold to that price... BUT if more then one product is put on the 5 $ Tag. then it is a mistake from wal-mart and if a product is higher then the price they even use the 5$ price -10$ so that comes back to free... But like i sayd this is here in Montreal Canada.

i personaly did that for my earphones... on an other wal mart hehe. the 50$ earphones (panasonic if you ask)was given to me at 20$ (price tag was 30 and there was 5 of them in line)

highly unlikely as this is the hottest item selling right now. for starters, it'd be locked up not "sitting in the $30 area." the only way I could see this possibly true is maybe some absolute idiot was tagging and pricing a new shipment and screwed it up. Then this fortuneate gentlemen came in right as the Wii's hit the shelf. I still say unlikely though...

1st from what is going on in my area (ny/nj) they dont last long enough to sit around and take cellphone picks and make calls. But assuming this is a slow area what would stop anyone from moving all 7 boxes to the $30 area and then taking a picture.

If that's the way Walmart works, great. They have no obligation to do that, however. An advertisement (including the price sticker on the shelf) is merely a decleration, if you will, that a contract oppurtunity exists. The contract would be you buying the product. However, the advertisement is not actually an invitation into a contract. What this means is that the ad means "Hey, you can buy this from us" not neccesarily "Buy this from us for this price." The price that shows up at the register is the true offer into a contract. This is when the company says "If you'd like to buy this product, you give us this much money, and we give you the product". That's pretty interesting if Walmart works differently than that; it's probably just so they don't have to train cashiers in buisness law. Because, really, how often do price dips THAT huge occur? Not enough, I'd think, to make a policy change worth it, and if these problems did occur enough, well, let's just say it's time to fire the guy who shelves the products.

I think you missed something there... the ticketed price is an advertisement for the said product associated with it. So if the price on the advertising price tab differs from the price at the registers then it can be considered false advertisement. So to keep from being sued from ancient workers *****ing up they have the price check policy to keep their revenue source coming back and to keep from being suid.

Yeah, its true. I worked in worked in walmart electronics. Lots of people try that if something is in the wrong spot. If its not much of a difference we give it to them. We'd always say no if its THAT big of a difference, but I can definitely see a district manager doing that in order to keep a customer.

i once bought a logitech wireless xbox controller for $15 at a target knowing full well it cost 40, it rang up as 40 and i said that it was marked as 15 so they called electronics and checked that there were more in the row like that and they gave it to me
