They have Xbox 720 and PS4. Why not a Wii 2?

revolutionIt has been settled before that the Wii is not about specs and technological wonders. Nintendo has always maintained that it's all about the experience. Given the Wiimote and all, the Wii indeed is like a breath of fresh air to the already saturated market.

With that said, some can't help but wonder if the Wii is something more of a Nintendo's crash test dummy. For all we know, this statement could have been uttered somewhere in their HQ in Kyoto, Japan: "Let's come up with a kick ass controller but keep the hardware at a minimum. If it catches enough steam, then let's bring out our real next-gen console."

Well, that sounds absurd probably to you but don't tell us that the Wii is Nintendo's "end all and be all" baby. There have been talks about the Xbox 720 and the PlayStation 4. Why not a discussion about Wii 2? Or Wee? Whatever. At any rate, there will be a next cycle of consoles and we definitely can't remove Nintendo from the picture.

Gaming site Destructoid already started discussing about the matter and here are their speculations:
  • Because of the heavily-funded development, Wii 2 is comparable or perhaps surpasses the PlayStation 3's capabilities, thus making Wii 2 the most powerful console on the market. With the right amount of money, it could be the leader for some time.
  • Wii 2 keeps the Wii control scheme but the entire system is tightened up and perfected. Games are now in HD and in full 5.1 surround sound.
  • Wii 2 is sold at $299-$349 in order for Nintendo to at least break even.
  • Wii 2 goes on sale in November 2008.
Is the Wii just a crash test dummy and a powerful Nintendo console is on its way? Also, it is possible that the Wii is already it, and it will take around five years before a new model comes around? Tell us what you think.

I'd buy it...if it was even remotely possible to be real.

is this thing even real, or a rumor, because there is no RUMOR: in the title

Yes, it is a rumour. Although it would be cool, go by the old saying, why fix something that isn't broken? The Wii has been a HUGE success and it would be premature to release another console so quickly. If it were to be released in 2008 it wouldn't have the market for a huge time as the Sony and MS next-gens are predicted to be released around 2010. For now Nintendo should be happy with the massive success of the DS and the likely continued success of the Wii.

that was about the dumbest report ever. Let me talk about the PS5

It will use a human soul and mind to power it

» What?

Both QJ.net and Destructoid Lose.

Wii isn't a testing ground whatsoever, the DS was. The Wii was going to be low powered from the start, it wasn't a "Hmm, lets do a low power console first, and then release a powerful one in 2 or 3 years time" type of deal.

Noobs.

» People just dont get it

People just don't get the Wii...

Its not about HD graphics or the power of the hardware, why on earth would Nintendo suddenly change their mind and release the most powerful console?

Ridiculous rumor.

by TaMs - 2007-01-03 01:43
» heh

if nintendo brings out some powerfull console (like ps3 :D) with alternate controller for normal games like ps3 games (because everyone doesnt like to play wii kind of games) then no-one can win nintendo.

by Bob - 2007-01-03 03:15
» to TaMs

Nintendo will win, Because they already have more than 3 mill consoles sold. (see nexgenwar)

And because all types of ppl like the controller

Ninty will wait at LEAST four years before they release their next iteration of consoles. For all we know they could be enhancing the user interface even further instead of concentrating on HD and 5.1 surround sound like everybody is hoping for.

I know this sounds stupid, but i'd MUCH rather have a system that was designed around a Wii 2 Glove (as in wearing a glove that requests movements for not only the hand, but for each finger as well) and for BOTH HANDS at the same time.

Making that work though would take some serious power and beta testing out all the countless glitches that would occur. I don't think IR sensing would work with it though, of course i can't think of an alternative XD so what do i know lmao.

Either way, back to the story. Ninty wouldn't bail out on all their loyals and newcomers by releasing a "ok, that was a test... here's the REAL" system. I'd be royally PISSED (unless you could trade in your Wii and only pay like 50 bucks more for it).

I'm sure that Nintendo is working on a new console already. But they will certainly not release it SOONER if the Wii is a success. It will be at least four or five years before a new Nintendo console comes out.

The only way that I could see Nintendo releasing a new console sooner is if the Wii does get left in the dust after the hype around the controller dies down.

"that was about the dumbest report ever. Let me talk about the PS5

That's funny ***** right there. People said that the Gamecube was a test dummy too. We just entered this evolution of gaming systems don't try to push the next-gens already. If anything you should know Nintendo doesn't number their systems. NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube. Nope no NES2 or Gamecube 2 there. Leave the sequels to Sony. And XBox 720 just sounds dumb.

by SBleed - 2007-01-03 11:20
» PS3? Don't make me laugh

Okay. I have DBZ T2 for the Wii and you can play with the Wii-Mote, The Classic controller (far better than the PS controller), or Gamecube controllers wavebird or wired. If people don't want to use the Wii-Mote, they don't have to. BTW PS3 aint got nothing on the Wii. So people can't ***** about not liking the controller, cause you have at least 4 to choose from

by mykennel - 2007-01-03 23:38
» agree!

TOTALLY AGREE... revolution was an awesome name! why did they change it to wii??? everyone laughs at me when i say i own a wii. not because of the system, they think its awesome.. just because it sounds like.. well. okay if you were two u'd appreciate the joke. my friends are 22 tho. lol.

by WC - 2007-01-04 00:37
» Exactly.

"Because of the heavily-funded development, Wii 2 is comparable or perhaps surpasses the PlayStation 3's capabilities, thus making Wii 2 the most powerful console on the market. With the right amount of money, it could be the leader for some time."

I stopped reading right there. I had to force myself to go back after I read peoples' comments.

Nintendo is about FUN, not graphics, or having the 'best' processor, and any of that crap. Part of 'fun' is 'affordable'.

The next line about having to raise prices $100 to 'break even'... Nintendo ALWAYS makes a profit on their consoles. Not 'break even'. PROFIT.

This article was obviously written by a Nintendo fanboy that has been hanging around Sony fanboys too long.

The way to own the market is NOT to copy everyone else. It is to innovate and make a product that people WANT and can afford.

It's not even a rumor, it's more like speculation.

by dig - 2007-01-04 02:55
» Name Change

I believe the reason behind this was because evolution(I believe this was the original name of the ps3) and revolution(orig inal name of wii) sound too much alike

by lol - 2007-01-04 04:02
» lol

you might need a wii 4 to compare to the xbox360 or even the ps3......, Nintendo ***** the bed on the wii.... great idea but it sucks playing a glorified gamecube, the wiimote should of been a attachment for the gamecube

by ... - 2007-01-04 10:20
» ha...ha.

this is the worst prediction I've ever seen. It will never happen. Stop dreaming and wake up to reality.

by mreverdred01 - 2007-01-04 15:15
» Name Change

If they had kept the name Revolution for the Wii then people would think that Nintendo was giving too much hype to the idea of a remote controller. Calling it the Wii is a far better suited name for it, since it's all about fun and not about new technology. Revolution sounds more like a deep and ominous name. Maybe they should have named the PS3 the Revolution (Even if it is a poorly executed revolution). The name would fit well with those scary-ass commercials with the crying dolls and wall-breaking crows. I can totally picture some guy saying in a deep raspy voice, "The Revolution" at the end of those commercials. If nintendo goes through with this plan of a Wii-PS3 kick-ass hybrid, they should deffinantly call it the Revolution. I agree with Koru-Sama though. It's too early for them to re-make the Wii, so they should do what iPods have where you can return them for the newer version and pay the difference.
