The Zelda Wii and GameCube Scenario

Legend of ZeldaIt seems something interesting is brewing. Apparently, in the recent issue of Nintendo Power, an update about the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess seem to reveal that aside from controls, their aren't any significant differences between the Nintendo GameCube and Wii versions of the game. If this is proven to be true, then this news tidbit just quashed all those rumors about the game - rumors such as several added features.

With this predicament at hand, we can't help but think that the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is a double-edged sword in the sense that its release would be marred by positive and negative scenarios.

On the positive side of things, whatever happens Nintendo is coming out with two versions (1 for the Wii and another for the GCN) which could mean more profit coming Nintendo's way. On the negative side of the street, if the GCN version turns out be better than that of the Wii version, then this might hurt Wii in its competition with the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

What do you think about this development? Do you think it's a good thing that Nintendo is coming up with two versions of Zelda or do you think it's such a bad idea? Which version do you think would be better? Let us know through your comments.

It's Zelda, it's not like it's going to be horribly bad.

If the wii version turns out to be bad then by the time people realise that, a million+ copies would already have been sold; besides, Zelda is not the only game in the Wii launch.

Paranoid articles ftl.

Despite what this article seems to say, there are going to be major gameplay differences between the two consoles. The Wii is a fully interactive system, and the control scheme will show this. Rather than sitting on your duff and playing on the GC version, players will be more likely to be up and moving on the Wii. The Wii controller is designed to make players have to move to make things happen, such as what was shown in the unique little fishing game demonstrated at E3. Another sample showed how the controller when pulled back will draw the bow, and a small speaker in the controller will sound the creaking of the bowstrings in the player's ear. I don't know about you, but this sounds like some interesting differences to me!

Nintendo is dumb to release both right away. They should release the Wii one first with no plans for a GCN version. People will by a Wii strictly to get the next game in the Zelda franchise. If the game does well, release the GCN one 6-9 months down the road. Someone in marketing should be fired...

# Money grabbing?Guest 2006-06-21 05:55
I don't get it. Why would they release two versions if the only difference is the controls? Surely they can just add the code to the GC version and have it only activate when the game is loaded on a Wii.

If there is absolutely no difference between the two other than that, then this just seems like another attempt from Nintendo to squeeze more money out of its customers.

So Chekote does that mean that Sony doesn't try to do that as well?

Chekote, you are an idiot. How do you think they are trying to 'squeeze' money from people? Are you implying that they are trying to get people to buy the Wii and GC versions even though they're the same game? Why the hell would someone buy both when all the Wii one is is the GC one with Wii remote support. No one knows if it is possible to include wiimote support on a GC disc, but that isn't even the point at all. I can't beleive all these comments are saying "OMG nintendo why are you doing this, your marketing is dumb. It should be wii only" etc etc etc...

They are doing one of the most generous things a game company has done, they've taken a flagship title and not forced you to buy the next gen system to play it. They are offering a more featured version (wiimote feature) for wii owners but still giving the option to own the game for people who can't buy a wii just yet but own gamecube. How can you even think to criticize them for that?

# SCRATH THE GC ONEGuest 2006-06-21 07:54
i think they should scratch the GC version...

I dont know about other people but i feel ...like i would miss something if i only play one of the versions..like there is something different in each version to experience...but if there was only one..I will be 101% satisfied :) then you know you wont miss out ANYTHING...

How do you know that they could do that? Theycould have filled a GC disc with just the normal disc. Remember the Wii discs are larger.

If they were squeezing money they would only release it on the Wii, so people would have to get the Wii to play it. By releasing it on both, it's letting people who don't want a Wii straight away.Actually, this is the only time I can ever think of a company doing something for the customer instead of profit.

seriously why cant they just release 1 version of this game that has optional wii controls if played on wii? i remember n64, the expansion pack could put out better graphics and features or somethin... I want to have a choice, if i dislike playin it on wii den i can play it on my gcn, or better yet use my freakin gcn controller on the wii (like for ssbb)

# Are you people stupid?Guest 2006-06-21 09:27
Why in the world would you complain about nintendo giving the consumers a cheaper option for those that can't afford the upgrade? That's like saying that PS2 owners should have to buy a PS3 just to play God of War 2, even though they could release it on a PS2. Its idiocy.

# They promised a Gamecube versionssj3fox 2006-06-21 11:58
They said it was for Gamecube and they do not want to betray Gamecube owners. Also it takes a long time to make a good Zelda game so this is the only way Wii can have one any time soon.

I think it doesn't really matter if it is the same, the controls will be different and that is what matters. I think the controls will be great and it will def. be better than the GC one.

# its a zelda game!!!Guest 2006-06-21 13:53
first of all the whole wii & gcn is not a good idea, this is a nex gen game & we should not force it apawn an old system, the wii controlls to tp will b like nothin we have ever felt & it will put a whole new, & better perspective on the zelda series, the wii verson WILL be better, more enjoyable, & much more fun then the gamecube version, i know nintendo doesnt want to force everyone on there new console & ditch there old, but they need to move on, & do it quick, get the wii version people! it WILL b better

personally, i think the wii version will be better because it puts you in the game allowing you to control everything. plus, if they dont like the wii version they will go return it and buy the gcn version and play it on their wii, so the wii is still going good market.

What might be a very wise move for Nintendo is to package both versions together. Let's say I buy a the dual package for my GC. Whenever I'm looking to buy a nextgen console, I'll remember, hey I already have a wii game. This may not seem all that bright to those who read this website, but it would be a way for Nintendo to "prepackage a game" without actually doing so.

# I think you've got it wrong...Guest 2006-08-15 18:35
I think this article is on the wrong track. As far as I know Nintendo intends to release only ONE version of the game. Kind of like marketting it as a gamecube game with special features for the Wii (more specifically, its controller).

What you have to understand is that the Revolution is very similar to the GameCube. It uses basically the same processor & video chipset, it is simply faster, and some extra GPU features have been added for it. Kind of like how PC's evolve, taking doom3 as an example, depending on the hardware it runs on, different code paths get executed. However, more or less it runs on the same hardware. It is the same case with the GameCube and the Wii.

So, even IF Nintendo did physically sell two versions, they would probably be identical executable code wise - if not, the gamecube version will definately run on the Wii anyways since the hardware layout and everything else is virtually the same, it would just probably get better frame rates and such. It is probably more a case of the game detecting the Wii's controller and then enabling its special features.

The only thing I can think of is that perhaps they want to have higher res textures, in which case doing a separate release on the Wii's larger capacity discs make sense. However, to put everyone's fears to rest, the Wii is basically a beefed up version of the GameCube, so if you bought the game for the GameCube, then got a Wii, you won't have to buy the game again at the very least.

Hope that clears things up.
