We all know the next-gen consoles' specs and their games as well as their price tags. Some people just have to compare things on insanely different criteria. Hardcoreware took the liberty of comparing just how much power each next-gen console gobbles up at different states to see of we have any power hogs in the mix. If you don't own any consoles just yet or are in the market for another one, this is not an article that will affect your final pick, but it's still fun to know what drives the meter up.

Also included in the mix was a PC with relatively good specs- enough to match any next gen console in the market. The game machines were tested in these states:

1. During game playback
2. During movie playback
3. While in console mode
4.While on standby

The testers used the new Watts UP? Pro power tester to gather the data needed for the experiment. These are the results:

1. During game playback, NBA Live 2007 was used for the PS3, Gears of War for the X360 and Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess for the Wii. The PC used PREY. We see that the Wii is phenomenally efficient in power, averaging 17.8 watts in half an hour while the PS3 used up an average of 185.9 watts over the same time span.

2. When it comes to movie playback, the PS3 was the leader in consumption with a 173.2 watt average. The 360 eats up significantly less at 125.6 watts. We also included a DVD player in the bunch for reference and comparison.

3. These are the average readings at console mode when no game is inserted but the system is active. The PS3 remains on top with177.15 while the Wii is still efficient at 13.5 watts.

4. The Wii was plugged to the Connect 24 which allows it to stay connected and remain updated through Nintendo's network. The PS3 consumes the least while on standby but the disparity isn't really significant. That's a dollar a month for the Wii and 20 cents for the PS3.

So there you have it. Knowing the nature of gamers, this probably wouldn't matter but to your mom, it just might. Click on the graphs above to check the data for yourself.

interesting

I wish the Gamecube was in this comparison, cause the Wii's graphics arn't much better than Gamecube. Also, high definition movie playback on 360 + PS3. Still...interesting how the Wii takes up less than a light bulb, or am I wrong?

PS3 even more expense

Wow so the PS3 is also the most expensive when it comes to your electricity bill 1!!!.

WOW 3rd post thats the best ever
by - 2007-02-23 04:24:37
Wii 360 PS3 PC

So thats why the bill was so much........
by - 2007-02-23 04:27:59
Takes money to be 1st

it takes money to be on top. No matter the situation, you got to pay! Even though i find that graph BS, because it states that the Wii takes up less than a light bulb (cannot be true) . Second of all PS3 and X360 have HD disk drives, the PS3 with a Blu-ray. And as well whats a litle exra 5$ a month eh? THat fools money!

poor ass nukkas

It's like buying a Hummer. If you can afford the vehicle, gas is just a drop in the bucket. If you got the money to spend on a PS3, your electricity bill doesn't matter. I don't give a ***** how much my utility bills are, It's not going to break the bank paying them. I leave all my stuff running all the time and I have 2 comps, a PS3, xbox360, and a Wii.

hmmmmmm

Wow very intresting.I would of though even in gameplay PS3 would be pushing more current. But just like when a company hires a firm to do a poll they never give u 100% of the questions asked so u can see for yourself. If you ask people the right questions u can come to any bias conclusion. What movie was used for all 4 platforms and were they bluray, dvd, orhdvd. My common sense is telling me some software might be more hardware intensive. NBA Live cant be pushing the PS3 as hard as gears of War is pushing the Xbox. o well just my comment.

Hmmmmm

Wouldnt It Make More Sense To Use Call Of Duty On All 3 Consoles As different Games Would Need More Graphics Power Than Others?
by Darth Manson - 2007-02-23 11:35:06
pffft

If by that you mean a Hummer that uses a lot of gas (electricity) + has no where to go (no games)

PS3

Wow, I have an energy hog! Maybe Sony will make a hybrid PS3 to lower power consumption. :P
by - 2007-02-23 12:28:23
hmm

These were a bit expected. However, if you notice why the PS3 and 360 are consuming much more power than a standard Blu-Ray/HD player is because of the stuff running inside. I think MS and Sony should release a firmware update that will stop the running of the HardDrive and all other non-essential components during movie playback. You really don't need an HDD and other things running while watching a movie. These alone take up alot of power. Will be interesting to see if something like this is every implemented in either console....

Inconsistant

1. - You Used 4 completely different games? There's going to be a big difference right there! Every game loads different and at different intervals. 2. - The PS3 is using a Blu-Ray drive while the others are using DVD drives, another inconsistency. 4. - The PS3 finally has a up in the category and it's played off with a "Phh, it's nothing!" - If it's nothing then why even do the article? Lastly, were you really f**king surprised? You've got a beast of a system with a demanding processor, vid card, HD, blu-ray, wi-fi and other such items up against a squashed Gamecube!
by - 2007-02-23 12:53:27
..

You need the HDD if the movie is stored there.
by - 2007-02-23 13:24:58
@hush404

the ps3 "up" was played off with a "phh" cuz it was a very small difference, unlike the ones where the ps3 used more power. and the wii is not a squashed GC. IMO, the PS3 is a beefed up PS2.....update the graphics and put in a couple of tilt sensors....woooooo....meanwhile the wii introduce an entirely new experience.....how is that the same? jeez.
by - 2007-02-23 14:16:34
mo jam 'me'

wat do the controllers hav to do wit the console using up power? the wii is an updated gc wit new controllers, get over it already, the ps3 is a monsterous baby at the moment(and ps3 is not a beefed up ps2 mind mosts parts are different not upgraded versions), and the 360 is lik full blown and needs more tricks(and wat the 360 is a beefed up xbox too?).
by - 2007-02-23 15:11:54
Hmmm...

Wow isn't Nba live 2007 for PS2? Theres no PS3 version of that game. Use a PS3 game and see how much it takes up probably less. Besides PS3 has PS2 chips in it for PS2 emulation, so i can't imagine why it wouldn't take more power than 360. But, use a PS3 BLU RAY game not PS2 DVD game. =] But, really who cares about power consumption my god everyone is more worried about playing the games, viewing their whatever...
by - 2007-02-23 16:41:18
WHY????

IF IT USES MORE WHEN IT RUNS ANOTHER GAME THAT ISN'T FAIR, SO THEY USED THEIR FLAGSHIP TITLES!!!!!
by - 2007-02-23 17:11:13
another

another pointless article
by - 2007-02-23 17:54:05
hahaha

i no they shuld do gamecube!!!!
by - 2007-02-23 18:44:05
dipset

um fi you were smart "me" you wouldve done your research. The ps3 is not a beefed up ps2 considering the architecture is completely different new cpu enw video card new disk drive new everything. the wii upgraded gc vgfx upgraded gc cpu and a wiimote? ok yea im sorry your rite the ps3 was the beefed up 1..... you fuuuuking wanker!!!!
by Vecha - 2007-02-23 18:54:38
hmmm

more power for less efficient gaming? don't think so. I think you fanboys are making a big deal out of this... so the ps3 is using more power...that makes it better? Dumbass.
by theTick197 - 2007-02-23 19:55:08
heh

so i guess the xbox2 and PS3 really are a power house
by - 2007-02-23 22:55:42
lawl

you shouldn't be talking dude, the reason why the ps3 uses so much power is because its a multimedia center and not just built for gaming.
by - 2007-02-24 10:09:36
surprised?

I'm not surprised with this, the wii was built to use less power. Also for those that are on the side of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, do you rememebr Mini-Disks, the so called revolution that was to bring an end to CD's, it didn't work, even though MDs are much better, because Cds had and have still got a strong hold, just like the DVDs have a strong hold today, so i very much doubt that the next gen of DVDs will take of anytime soon, if at all. The only advantage is Hi-Def, and when compared with the price of such players/disks, or in this case consoles, it's really not worth the extra money. besides consoles have moved past the graphics, the graphics wars are so N64, only retards hold onto that argument, it's all gameplay today, and if nintendo show some balls and take risks that other consoles don't, well done nintendo for bringing gaming into the next age.
