Run Linux on Wii and win prizes - Image 1The folks at WiiLi.org are after a very important bounty, it seems. In fact, it's so important that they're making it a race for folks to cash in on their technical skills. At least, it will be once the bounty actually goes live.

The quest? Boot Linux on a Wii. The prize? US$ 499 (possibly more) and the knowledge that you completely pwned every other techie who took up the challenge. The bounty is currently a draft though, so there's no official word on when this race actually starts, but here are the specifics of the criteria for winning the prize as drafted on April 20:
  • Boot Linux on the Nintendo Wii without voiding the warranty.
    • Using attached hardware on USB, etc, is fine, as long it is documented what it does and where to obtain/build it.
    • X needs to run.
    • Wiimote, keyboard, mouse, dvd drive, sd-card and network support.
    • Documentation off the code execution technique on the Wiili.org wiki.
    • YouTube video and how-to.
    • Any files used to do it must be provided
      • Needs to show the full av cable during the whole video to make sure it is for real
      • No cutting out parts of the video
Since the bounty hasn't gone live yet, you may want to start tinkering with your programs to see how to get it to work. In the meantime, we'll keep you posted on when this goes live.

This is just what was needed to kick-start homebrew on the Wii, as soon as we workout how to run linux, in theory any homebrew would be runnable.

if wii can manage to run linux, i dont think you'll be able to do a lot with it considering xbox, which is near wii's specifications, could barely run it.

# You haven't got a clue about Linux have you.Guest 2007-04-22 05:21
Linux isn't one operating system. It's a core lots of operating systems work off of. They have linux working properly on iPod Nanos. Bit of a difference between a Nano's specs and an XBox's specs.

If they wanted to, they could have created a XBox version of Linux, or adapted a current version to run on it properly, but no-one was that bothered.

if you use the way to get linux running on a game cube to work on the wii then you would just need to open the usb ports, and get the blue tooth to work and use ppjoy and glove pie and you could use linux on the wii with the wiimote and 2 4-port usb adapters.........................

I don't think that would work because that is in limited compatibility mode isn't it?

# opera browser exploitGuest 2007-04-22 16:10
The JPEG vulnerability in OPERA seems to be found in the WII opera browser too, so anyday now. Its a little unclear as to at which time you were to download the channel.

Read up @ http://www.opera.com/support/search/view/852/

I would suggest not updating your system or opera browser for a bit, this is likely to lead to many things.
