The Wii Controversy: Is Nintendo fooling us all? |
Listed in: Wii Tags:
Ó
Everyone must have heard about it by now - the disaster of a brand name that is "Wii", the supposed new name for Nintendo's Revolution console. With thousands of Wii jokes now in circulation, Nintendo fans all over the world in shock, and haters laughing their asses off, how come no one has questioned the actual legitimacy of the name? Of course, we got a press release straight from Nintendo filled up to the brim with pretentious phrasing. But couldn't it be that they're toying with us all, merely utilizing the backlash as free advertisement? The name and branding blog Snark Hunting is one of the first to step forward and call out their doubts - and they've got some good points. The first one we should all have witnessed ourselves now, possibly without realizing it.
"Allowing your audience time to vent is not SOP in a name announcement, and also telegraphs that Nintendo knows what a stinker this name would be."
In their opinion, it's not possible to come up with a worse name for a product - and people's reactions mostly seem to show that. But here's the most interesting aspect so far - no trademarks for "Wii" have been registered.
"This is unprecedented for Nintendo and it is not possible that this is an oversight."
This leads the author to the conclusion that Nintendo must have registered the real name under a dummy corporation, to be revealed at E3. The whole truth has yet to show up, it seems. Is the name genuine or not? Whatever we may think, articles like these will boost up the hype even higher. And with that - Wii or not - Nintendo has already won. Clever.

But they just might be. They aren't ones to flat out lie. What if 'Wii' was the name of their controllers but not the console? Or the name of the consoles as in, the community the consoles would create?
Like you call a bunch of Mourning Doves a flock. What if a bunch of Revolutions, the WAN of them, was called 'Wii'? It wouldn't really be a lie then, now would it? Then again, Nintendo hasn't revealed the other big secret. Maybe there's more than one console? Both together are called 'Wii' or maybe a peripheral. The possibilities are endless, IF Nintendo isn't being straightforward .
But as the article said, either way, Nintendo knew what they were doing. It's not that hard to change the font on a website banner if you have the original PSDs, so that's not a problem for sites to change (especially if they were in on it for a while and Nintendo told them to do it to help increase the believability of it.)
That would explain why Nintendo's site still (unless it changed today) has Revolution in the URL. Hmm...something to think about, non-the less.

if it isn't a lie then they've also done well with their pr etc as everyone's talking about it, but for the problem that the marketing chaps have said 'they couldn't have thought of a worse name' (well some of them).
for N's sake i hope they're pulling our legs, and there's a big joke behind it. they love to show off, and surprising us with this would make them wet themselves... so bring it on!
that 'tm' in the logo is exactly why it's suspicious, it's not got a trademark, it says tm and given it's N's next big thing it should have a trademark... but it doesn't appear to have one!
so perhaps it is a trick, perhaps not. either way this release is designed to get people excited pre-e3. and aren't we all having fun!?

All of these pieces of entertainment had stupid names, but because of their success they have created their own image to a odd name. No amount of typing will change nintendo's mind, so change your own.

excuse me flow? hahAHAHAH
Would you only be able to play Nintendo Flow during the last 6 days of the month?
Nintendo Heaven?
Maybe if Playstation's new console was called Playstation Hell, thatd be a good rival.
You'd be excluding many other religons by naming your console, heaven and setting the stanard pretty high, what could be after Heaven? Reincarnation? ick
this might be why you dont work for Nintendo

Naming it Blade has nothing to do with the system. System names should speak something about them, but naming it Nintendo Blade makes it seem like something out of the Marvel universe. Might as well call it Nintendo Daredevil. No offense.
The same for Katana and the like. It has nothing to do with the system. All past names of Nintendo systems had something to do with what they could do or looked like.
Even Tamagotchi makes sense, because "Tamago" is Japanese for 'egg', which is what the little virtual pet containers were and what the pets hatched from.
I'm not saying the list of names is necessarily bad, but has little or nothing to do with the console. Nintendo Go would have been cool, since 'Go' is Japanese for "5" and it's the fifth console and the name sounds cool.
But regardless of how they sound and as bad as Wii may sound, the idea makes sense and the logo does as well. Personally, Nintendo WiFi sounds cooler to me and makes sense. Heck, WiiFi would have been a little cooler sounding. But it's not just about sound, but meaning as well.

As was revealed in an interview with Nintendo of Canada's Marketing Director by VGM Daily, this "Wii" decision was made straight out of Kyoto without any input from anywhere else. They didn't eve bother to do focus testing outside of Japan.

My whole life I've said "playing Nintendo" when I meant any videogame. "Playing Playstation" sounds redundantly retarded anyway.
But like I said in another thread. Just call it the "Nintendo W" if you're worrying so much. So when your friends ask what you're doing tonight you can just say
"Gonna play some Madden W".
