Ten Gaming Myths, Shattered and Burned

Games are for children. Games promote violence. RPGs are dead. The PS3 was a mistake.

These are statements that gamers everywhere have had to put up with from other people and sometimes even from fellow-gamers over the years. Sometimes, these words come from our peers and our family, and again and again, arguments have ensued and debates have been carried out regarding these topics. These battles of beliefs could range from shouting matches to elaborate academic theses, complete with PowerPoint presentations.

However, one man has finally come out with it, and has taken up the responsibility to smash ten popular gaming myths to itty-bitty pieces, namely:Gaming Myths, debunked
  • The Playstation 3 will Fail
  • PC Games are Doomed
  • You Need a $500 Graphics Card
  • Console Games are for Twitch Gamers
  • Handheld Games are for Kids
  • Console Games are Too Simple
  • PC Games are Too Complicated
  • PC Copy Protection is Too Onerous
  • Games are Too Violent
  • I'm Embarrassed About Gaming
Loyd Case over at ExtremeTech has voiced out opinions that may have already been bottled up in millions of gamers everywhere, but have not seen the light of day until now. For example, he goes on about how the worst thing that may possibly happen to the PS3 would be a late launch date, and that though the next-gen consoles are very exciting, nothing can beat playing an RTS game on a PC.

Though personally, I agree with Case over some points, there are others that may need a little more time before it can be proven true. In the meantime, take the time to read Case's view on the matter, then let us know what YOUR thoughts are via the comments.

It will fail if they don't change the price and their attitude. They think they know the market pretty well, they're so full of it. I would like the old Sony back; the one that released the original Playstation. They are wasting tons of money to win the market, but they're only going to explode soon enough.

So ps3 will not fail... that put how does this myth shattered when the thing hasn't been released yet? Come on now we still don't know what's to come of it but yea right how can it fail when ps has such an insane following. I mean look at the ps3 and psp forums if one little tiny thing is meantioned about it not being what it says it is they'll be 50 comments saying f u in about 2 mins....

Sony is too arrogant. They stand a decent chance to lose the majority. Fail may be a bit overboard though.

"It will fail if they don't change the price and their attitude."

Bull s***

Look up some facts and numbers before you spew out stupid comments.

PS2 launched for $550 in Europe and it STILL sold off the shelves.

They'll also only ship 2 million consoles for launch and they will naturally sell out. As will the next shipment of 2 million up until March 2007.

After that the prices will drop, and the PS3 will go on as it's predecsors always have.

Saying that the PS3 will fail is either just plain ignorant, or you're just kidding yourself.

Speaking of that, why are Americans *****ing about 600 when others payed 550 for PS2, and will pay 700 - 800for PS3? People are either richer in Europe, or Americans are spoiled with low prices and cant pay what the console is worth.

wow Mii you're an idiot. It sold for 550 euros, not dollars. Which in case you didnt know is the same price that all other places in the world paid. Maybe YOU need to get your facts straight before making yourself look like a complete idiot next time.

# As others have said...Guest 2006-08-30 09:41
...while "fail" is a bit extreme, I suspect Sony stands to lose a fair chunk of marketshare.

On pricing compared to PS2... that launched in the UK for UK£299.99, which at today's exchange rates is about US$570 (compared to the US PS2 launch price of US$299.99). It appears like the "premium" model of the PS3 (which realistically seems to be the only one worth getting) will probably launch somewhere around the UK£425 mark, which equates to around US$800 - a significant price hike, and significantly more expensive than the US launch which is slated to be around US$599. You cannot ignore the numbers - this is far more money than most people have previously been prepared to spend on what is basically (despite Sony's pleas to the contrary) a games console.

Anyway. Not such an impressive article, all told.

Ps3 is gonna fail its sells are gonna be so bad it mightnot even make it through the first year without going out of buisness. Im sorry the onley way ps3 would suceeed is if they just plain out sold it as a computer but thats never gonna happen because ps3 will never run windows xp Microsoft is a direct compeditor with sony and they would never allow it. Ps3 is gonna die and its gonna die hard and fast.

Hey my Friends. When the PS2 came up we had no Euro we Had the "D-Mark".

The starting price was 600 D-Mark what you can compare with 300 Euro.

The ps2 in europe did launch for more then 500€ (in belgium atleast) and that is even more then 500$. And even games did cost less in usa then here in europe. Looks like finaly you guys get to pay as much as us. And you can 't say that ps3 will fail because it cost to much. In japan it will sell great as a blu ray player, like the ps2 did as a dvd player.

You act like windows is the only opperating system. There is something bether, calle Linux and microsoft doesn 't own it. so they could use that if they would sell it as a computer. I believe they said it was going to use linux anyway. I know the ps2 had a linux kit.

That's where the conflict is. If the PS3 fails then there will be no PS4.

I do expect game companies to pull out.

I believe one already did citing high dev costs and the high console cost.
