Take-Two's Zelnick criticizes AO rating for Manhunt 2

Adults Only - Image 1In light of the AO rating that's been haunting their Manhunt 2 game for the Wii and PSP platforms, Take-Two Interactive once again stepped in to say their piece. This was part of the discussions that came up during a recent conference call company chairman Strauss Zelnick attended.

"WeÂ’re determined to bring Manhunt 2 to the consumers for which it was intended, and to do so in a responsible fashion," said Zelnick during the meeting.

Aside from the AO rating it received from the ESRB in North America, Manhunt 2 was not rated by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). This effectively bans the game from the UK region.

Zelnick further questioned the point of a rating system if it meant that the game could not be played even by its target age bracket. He was mindful not to pin the blame on retailers:

In that instance, one has to ask oneself whatÂ’s the purpose of a rating if it in fact means that a title cannot be released? But I donÂ’t think that that issue falls at the door of retailers. Retailers are acting responsibly, frankly, and I think a retailer has a right to say, 'This is what IÂ’m prepared to put on my shelves.' ItÂ’s not correct to be critical of the retailers at all. Because this is a voluntary ratings system in the US, we have to be critical of ourselves if weÂ’ve allowed a system to develop that prevents us from bringing a title to market that we want to bring to market. ThatÂ’s something that we have to address.

As an AO-rated title, only gamers aged 18 and above - still a sizable demographic of the community - would have had access to Manhunt 2. As a last note, Zelnick let the fans in on some good news. According to the Take-Two boss, Grand Theft Auto IV is expected to launch under an M-rating (Mature, age 17+) and shouldn't suffer the same stigma as Manhunt 2 did.

I'm sure manhunt isn't as gruesome as some of the movies that get released nowadays, or is on about the same level. I mean ... like many people say, the Saw series was pretty gross (and epic), yet their dvds are on store shelves. Why not Manhunt 2?

These people are just being babies because to them, "video games" means "little kids."

That'll just make things worse. Jack Thompson will be on the case, maybe more people will agree with him, and less people will buy the game.

Ok, I really can care less about this game, and I actually hope it doesn't get released (and I wished that movies like Saw, Hostel, etc never existed)...but honestly...why even have an AO rating at all? Consoles won't support it, retailers won't sell it, and most of all...there is only a one age difference between the two. There are many people at age 17 who are more responsible than people at age 20...so whats the point? It seems that it being age 21+ would make more sense.

Movies nowadays are Crap when it comes to gore.

I prefer 80's Gore/splatter movies. That0s something to ban.

"Cannibal Holocaust" come in mind?

though the fact that why movies and games are treated different? Is beyond me. :S

stupid I would say

Last time I checked, parents were the ones to decide what their kids watch and play. Zelnick is right; what's the point of having an AO rating when it isn't even allowed? It's more of a slap in the face than a useful rating.

This is rediculass, games about finding and killing psychopath humans (Manhunt) is deamed to be sick, but a game about hunting down, gutting and killing innocent wild creatures (Monster Hunter) is acceptable?

Just gose to show how *****ed up this world is, if anything it's the MH games that should banned.

Because in a game you're the one in control. Your thoughts are what makes you mame, slay, decapitate, dismember, etc. at your will. You're the one thinking the thoughts, and playing them out in a video game, whereas in a movie you're only watching the gruesomely disturbing thoughts of someone else.

I say to hell with Manhunt and take-two. To hell with GTA. It's time to clean the *****. People think we're weird for banning/bashing/hating these games, but think of it this way... These games are your idea of fun. You thirst for them so much. You WANT the gruesome violence, the sex, all that. These games do affect people, I don't care how smart or strong of mind you say you are, they affect you no matter what. You're only being naive if you think "psh I'm a big shot I can handle it. If you weren't affected by them you wouldn't have such a desire to have Manhunt 2 reach the shelves. Face it... You want it, because you like it, and you desire to play it and see the effects of your thoughts in the game.

Friends think about it... Society doesn't need these games.

how about everyone that dosent want the game shut the ***** up. and let the people in a FREE country choose what THEY want to play. YOU are not my care taker. YOU have NO right in saying what I can and can not play. YOUR OPINION is just that your opinion. Just cus I don't like it dosen't me I'm going out to force you to stop thinking that way. I just ask you stop trying to force your views on me too.

You are the whining moral minority. If you think society as a whole is against these types of entertainment then you may as well go back to your Ivory Tower and get a clue. If you can't handle a game like this (and a game is all it is) then maybe you should erase yourself from existence because you yourself aren't able to control your dark urges like the rest of us. Yes, everyone has dark thoughts every once in a while, thats human nature. Maybe you should clean up your own backyard before forcing your draconian views on others.

In the end, it's people like you who look to blame everything else but the people who actually carry out murderous impulses. They are the problem, not the games, movies or literature that have been shouted down over the centuries (yes, books where often banned before movies because they were "immoral")

I hate censorship and people like you are the real scum, looking to decide for everyone else what they see or indeed what they can say. YOU are the problem, not the solution. There are more realistic thinking people out there than you and your type of closed minded cronies.

a slap in everyones face. It gets an AO rating, but it still gets banned? The fn parents should moniter their kids. If they can't even do that, then why give two shootakees about it. They've probably played worse, or seen worse. So things like porn, killing inocent animals,(monste r hunter again) and movies like "Faces of Death" are perfectly alright for kids? This is trulet a slap in everyones face. They should just release the game, it couldn't be that detailed and gore filled anyway. Detailed high-def games on PS3 and 360 don't get banned? Is it just because the wii has motion sensing? This is truley BS. There are other people that play the wii besides kids. I guess until these ignorant people see this, we won't see manhunt :(

@ sumguy... you call me stupid yet you spell like a noob. Games ARE supposed to be fun. My point is modern society has a sick interpretation of what is "fun"

@ my impersonator who calls himself the real revolution... I don't need to erase myself from existence because I don't have any dark urges that need controlling. I have no desire to play a game like Manhunt because the urge to act out such violence is not there. I could care less if you need or want to play this game. You need to realize that you aren't the only one being "censored" so stop YOUR whining. Religion is censored all the time, because people don't want to be made to feel guilty or accountable. These platforms actually have sense sticking by their no AO rated games. It's not the fact that "it'll make people go on murderous rampages" but it's crap. It's mindless pollution. I hope Manhunt 2 dies along with Take-Two.
