Survey suggests why Wii is popular: motion sensing vs high def |
Ó
According to a new survey by InterSense Inc., more and more gamers are
buying more than one console, but the Nintendo Wii still continues to be
at the top of the wish list for Santa this Christmas.The results show that 39% of the respondents own more than one console, and 45% said they plan to own more than one by next year.
However, the survey also indicates that motion-sensing seems to be a particularly appealing factor in deciding which console to buy, which is a huge advantage for the Wii due to its emphasis on motion sensing gameplay.
The survey also suggests that screen size matters in deciding to buy a console. People who own 40-inch televisions are more likely to buy a console, and the Wii is the more popular choice for those with uber-screens (the 60-inch kind).
The findings suggest that motion-sensing is more popular than the option of high-def that the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 offer. (Suddenly, pained cries are heard from both Blu-ray and HD DVD camps.)
The survey, for the benefit of the curious and lovers of statistics, had 1,000 respondents from the US. As always, do note that these are survey results. They reflect general subjective public opinion, and may not necessarily dictate facts as they are.

To be honest, and not meaning to be bashing, I think the reason Wii is top of the wish lists is because it appeals to kids more then 360 and PS3. It has game characters and series that they recognize and have played on their DS and NGC. Nintendo is always a very good choice when looking to buy a console for a kid, always has been and probably always will be. Most people who want a PS3 or 360 can save the money up for themselves and don't have to ask to get it for Xmas
Im 18 years old and my dad bought me the Wii when it came out. Then, like 3 months ago, I bought an Xbox 360 because of Halo 3 and I bought it with my own money. Even thought the Wii costs less, my dad bought it for me and the 360 costs more, and I bought it with my own money. I never really thought of that before.
anyone find it interesting that a motion sensor producing company tells us that everyone prefers the motion sensing technology? and personally, i dont believe that with uber screens prefer wii. literally everyone i know that has an hdtv has either an 360 or ps3. maybe the survey was sent mostly to a group of people who are uneducated about hd, and dont realize how crappy a wii will look on a 60 inch tv compared to either 360 or ps3. i dont, im alway skeptical of companies funding "research" in their own field and then finding they are the best...
PS2 graphics are horrible, yet many people bought them over the Xbox with its superior graphics.
If you own a 60" HD TV and all you buy is a Wii, you should be shot.
The Wii, when compared to PS3/360, is cheaper and kid/casual gamer friendly and thus those demographics are falling in love with it. Those more into games are drooling over the aspects of the PS3/360 crisp graphics and ability to handle new + more realistic types of games.
Also, in the end, when Billy's mother goes to by a console and see's two behemoths at $400 and then the Wii at $250 with clerks saying "kids will love this" - she will go for the Wii.
Yeah, but the PS2 had the games. It didn't matter what kind of game you liked, the PS2 had it. The Xbox was always known for shooters and sports titles... and generally still is.
Also, this time around I belive it's a very different "war". It seems like the war is between Sony/Microsoft and the Wii is something on it's own that it vying for a different audience.
I still say that if you own any kind of HD tv and you choose the Wii as your single console, you need your head examined.
What developers don't understand is that they can make way more hardcore games with the wii than with any other system. If you can create an FPS experience that has customizable controls, where presets are only the starting point, then I could see some developers then going the whole nine yards to create the next Video game Sensation kind of like Halo.
To do this, developers have to understand that not everyone wants to point at the screen to turn, or if they do, they don't want to be stuck to the "invisible box" that most games have given us. What if someone wants the "invisible circle", or "invisible triangle", or "invisible octagon"? That should be up to the user......
To these idiots realize the PS3 has high def AND motion sensing? Listen to this BS:
"While the Nintendo Wii is the only console that currently features motion sensing technology, the survey revealed motion sensing is an important consideration for consumers regardless of the platform they planned to purchase. In fact, half of all survey respondents considering the purchase of either a PS3 or an Xbox 360 indicated the inclusion of dynamic motion sensing technology would make them more likely to purchase a gaming console."
"Screen size matters. The survey confirmed that owners of large-screen displays (40” or larger) are most likely to have plans to purchase any given gaming console."
Duhh no s*it that says nothing.
"Interestingly, the Nintendo Wii was the top gaming console choice among owners of ultra-large screen televisions (60” or larger)."
I call BS. That makes no sense whatsoever.
"The Nintendo Wii has clearly closed the gap on the Microsoft Xbox 360, in large part due to the integration of first-generation motion sensing technology that provides an intuitive gaming experience," stated Sean Wargo, Principal Consultant and President of The Market Sage.
Wow the company that makes motion sensors for the Wii (not the PS3) is endorsing the Wii.
I see these kind of things and people always forget that the PS3 has motion sensing, AND High definition.
I dont mean to sound like a fanboy by saying this but the PS3 is a complete package. It has motion sensing, Great online, HD, blu-ray, blue tooth/wireless remotes, and even a webbrowser. In my opinion the hardware has everything your could ask for. Now the PS3 is only asking for features, and if people just wait they'll see that where getting them.
nintendo said long ago when it was called the revolution (way better name imo) that they werent competing with the others. the system has sold 14 million but it is more of a nintendo game player than a console. the kids that love it wont love playing a fps but they will love mario. they also wont be getting a large screen tv and if they do they dont know enough to know what kind to get. 1080p may as well be moon speak. ps3 and 360 have high def and actually use it well in combination with graphics that deserve it. ps3 has motion sensing and uses it in much more inventive ways rather than requiring you to use it for every little think. ( lair is the exclusion to this...)
i guess we will have to wait to see who will be the new gamecube or n64 or dream cast.
wii- wait till No More Heroes comes out [highly anticipated and not by nintendo but had a bad launch in japan currently ranked 38...]
ps3- this year was a bit slow but the price drop has put it in the lead for a while. possibly that combined with next years game MGS and Hopefully FFXIII we can see a change it the tides
360- losing in japan winning else where.still mostly shooters although it seems like they are trying to buy their way into the rpg market. still japan favors a japanese console so that wont change things too much. even with the 1 year head start the 360 is not too far ahead of the ps3. im not sure if it can keep that lead for too much longer.
The graphics weren't horrible, they were just outdated.
The problem with your argument is when "Billy's" mother goes to buy a console ($400 vs $250), there isn't the $250 option because the consoles are always sold out. So in reality there is only the $400 dollar argument.
Your "get shot" comment was just dumb....
Not to be a hater (Cause I think that all the consoles have their selling points), but in my opinion the PS3 motion controls are garbage. I mean honestly, who actually buys a PS3 for the motion controls? People buy them because it's a high def system with great graphics, bluray player and media options. Not because of the SIX-AXIS...
Why is everybody hating on people with HDTVs with Wiis? Nobody talks sh*t about people who still watch standard DVDs on HDTVs. That's like saying that you "need your head examned" or "should get shot" because you don't have a HD DVD/Bluray player with ur HDTV.....
Let’s just have a head-to-head grudge match. How about this? (^^)
(just for your reference) Bioshock and some other X360 games will be released on the PS3 about one year later. In such cases, only a few people will buy those games on the PS3 because they’ll be old games then; moreover, people already played those games on X360 long time ago (vise versa).
[ Best X360 exclusive games ]
* Gears of War (90 points): Graphics! All you do is hide-shoot-hide-shoot-hide-shoot-(repeat this 9999 times more)
* BioShock (85 pts): Graphics & atmosphere! The entire game is only 10 hours long; no big reasons to replay
* Project Gotham Racing 4 (75 pts)
* Forza Motorsport 2 (70 pts): All those various customization is only for lifeless idi+ts
* Halo 3 (80 pts): It has almost same gameplay as the 3 year old Halo 2. Terrible and highly pixelated graphics in close proximity
* Burnout Revenge (70 pts): At first sight it looks fantastic, but once you played it for 1 hour then it gets extremely boring
* Dead or Alive 4 (50 pts)
* Mass Effect (40 pts): Its graphics is even much worse than the 2 year old game, Perfect Dark Zero; Bad frame rate very frequently; the gun fight is terrible and laughable (just compare with any shooter game)
* Command & Conquer 3 (45 pts)
* Eternal Sonata (20 pts): ROFL
* Saints Row (30 pts): Terrible frame rate all the time and blend graphics; the multiplay is a joke (LOL)
* Dead Rising (70 pts)
* Lost Planet (70 pts): If only a few things were right, this deserves 90 pts
* Crackdown (20 pts): Crap down!
* Prey (40 pts): X360 version was rushed; terrible frame rate with mediocre graphics; trashy multiplayer, too
* Blue Dragon (90 pts if your mental maturity is ten): or 20pts
* Quake 4 (40 pts): X360 version was rushed; horrible frame rate with garbage graphics; the multiplayer is LMAO
[ Best PS3-only games ]
* Warhawk (90 pts): Technologically and graphically mind-blowing, because the map is ridiculously huge, ground combat is terrible, but the air combat is groundbreaking; this is the real bomb so far, a lot of X360 fanbots I know are mesmerized by this game
* Uncharted Drake's Fortune (60 pts): Luscious graphics! but the entire game’s 5 hours long; the gunplay is weak as hell; brain-dead enemies (LOL)
* MotorStorm (80 pts): Top-notch graphics and technological achievement! The maps are too big (if the maps are smaller, then we can see more car versus car actions – this is MotorStorm’s strongest point)
* Heavenly Sword (60 pts): Gorgeous graphics! but the combat sucks a+s; and the whole game’s 6 hours long (and repetitive); no reasons to play again
* Resistance Fall of Man (70 pts): when you look at things closely they are very ugly and highly pixelated; average graphics in general! mindless run & gun garbage
* Ratchet & Clank Future (fantastic! 90pts, if you’re mentally 10 year old): or 30 pts
* Ninja Gaiden Sigma (30 pts): Same as Ninja Gaiden Black (years old)
* Folklore (20 pts)
* Lair (10 pts): LMAO
One reason I bought a Playstation 3 was for the motion controls. I enjoy games that use it. The is nothing wrong with the motion controls in the Playstation 3 setup
Lost Planet, Eternal Sonata, C+C3 and BioShock are not Xbox360 Exclusives
LostPlanet and Eternal Sonata are getting their PS3 Release and C+C3 and Bioschock was already released on PC.
(Although I agree that, if you can use a keybaord on mouse with thisgame on x360, the x360 versions owns, because you can get the good looking graphics)
So where is Unreal on the PS3's list ?
that because you have no common sense what so ever you sad little man
I think its perfect, like in heavenly sword you used it to move the rockets and blow up half the army lol. In Metal gear thats coming you can use it to lean and shake off your camo.
I dont want motion sensing for every little thing cause then it gets in the way (one example is when you turn on all the Sixaxis options in GRAW 2.) I like it actually better in the PS3 then the Wii. Obviously I didnt buy my PS3 FOR Sixaxis, but its a nice add on with a little in every game, Try out high velocity bowling if you dont know what im talking about!
I didnt buy my PS3 for motion sensing, Thats why I dont have a wii, cause thats about the only special feature it has.
I disagree with Resistance and Heavenly Sword.
Heaveanly Sword has some crazy combat in my opinion. It is short but also sweet.
Resistance was a launch game so its kind of obvious on the graphics side (and I still think it looks good.) "Mindless run + gun garbage" that's totaly your opinion.
You forgot to mention the strong points in the game. Resistance online has great support with Map packs, and updates that actually give you stuff and takes out bugs. And of course 20 vs 20 which no game on a console has beat so far.
Did any one know that Sony added its motion controls last second?? They did it because of the wii i remember hearing about it!And screw blu ray and HD DVD! Theyre way to expensive brand new movies are like 20 dollars already if they can make bluray and HD DVD the same as regular DVDs than i might actually care......Graphics and Picture clarity will only get so good.
rather than everybody defending what they have and stating why it is better we are missing the whole point of the comment.
Here in Asia people love the Wii as it is far more interactive. The high end graphics consoles are cool and I have one as this is my choice. The Wii though has far more fun element for people and especially groups. There are bats and rackets guns rifles steering wheels just about everything you can imagine on sale here for the Wii here and people are loving it. The point is having fun and playing games. Not everyone is awed by blow your mind graphics or puzzles that challenge the grey matter. Many people just like to be entertained together and at a simple fun level.
One appeal of the Wii is that grandma can play ping ping with her grand daughter but I cannot imagine many grandparents sitting down to Assasins creed or blasting aliens in Halo.
as a footnote to my previous comments we should also consider what may happen next gen with Wii. MS and Sony both need to compete as Nintendo now have a system that sells. Next gen Wii could have high graphics and HD content. Nintendo is closer to the living room VR experience than any other maker right now. How about golf fanatics that could use a real golf club with a sensor coupled with high end graphics. Nintendo have a system which has come closer to anything from anybody else for bringing the old style Amusement arcade into the living room. And Yes a large screen of 60" would be mind blowing regardless of tech comments that their resolution is not up to par with the PS3 of 360.
I do not have Wii but if they were to deliver such a system which is a logical course when one looks at the developing market then I will buy one.
FYI to you. If they added motion control last second, how could they design and manufacture the amount they did in less than a month?
well the news of the wiimote was around for a while before release i think sony added it because of all the Hype it was gettin so but doesnt matter even if they didnt Companys in all types of business pull that crap so who knows??
Wii is selling great for 2 reasons it's the lowest price point and it has motion. What bugs me is the pitifull effort of developers to implement good motion controls i have a PS3 as i hate using thumbsticks yet in spite of the potential for good use of motion in games (other than simple steering etc) it seems like developers are pretty useless at interpreting motion sensor signals for games in better ways. Being a programmer and an engineer I have some understanding of the signals from the accelerometers (wii & Ps3) and gyro (ps3 only) and IR camera (wii only), so it seems like the developers cant be trying to hard. Admittedly these signals are complex like voice recognition but the huge volume of PS3 and WII consoles ( 20+million combined now) should have developers doing far more than what they are to use motion controll techniques in games rather than falling back to those last-gen thumbsticks.
