Microsoft Xbox 360 - Image 1There's something a-brewing in Australia: According to the results of a survey filled out by the country's top retail chains, it looks like Microsoft's Xbox 360 console is losing its grip on Aussie retail stores. The numbers have revealed that the gaming industry retail business in the country down under benefit more from the sales coming from the Nintendo Wii and the Sony PlayStation 3.

The reason behind the Xbox 360's poor performance in the Australian market is mainly its longstanding Red Ring of Death problem that cropped up last year. On the other hand, the factors that made its rivals the Sony PS3 and the Nintendo Wii more popular were that the Sony console had a Blu-ray player, while Nintendo's console appealed to the casual gaming market.

One of the retailers said that the Xbox 360 sorely lacks something new that would revitalize consumer interest toward Microsoft's next-get console, and that their relationship with Microsoft is the only reason why they keep units in stock.

If that's the case, there may be some hope of stirring up gamer interest toward the console: the rumored Xbox 360 units outfitted with Blu-ray drives. The Internet grapevine is abuzz about the existence of such consoles, and we sure are interested in seeing them come into existence. More updates to come!

surely it will be the actual sales figures and not surveys which will give the true picture of how the consoles fair in australia. yes the ps3 has an exciting year ahead, hence the optimism, but that doesn't mean the 360 doesnt, and who is to say what surprises are just around the corner for all the consoles. all it needs is for a few games to be revealed for the 360 that blow gamers away to change attitudes and leave gamers and retailers feeling more positive (yeah i know, easier said than done :-)), but to me, this is just another in a long list of reports with a lot to say about nothing.

» Its not the games or the year ahead that makes the PS3 popular here...

The games and the year the PS3 has ahead of it have very little if at all anything to do with why it sells so good over here in Australia - where I live.

Yes the 360's RRoD is a contributing factor to why its falling behind but its also the fact that over here in Australia, PlayStation and Nintendo have been the only real brands to buy in the past.

To the mass public, reguardless of how much they are into consoles and video games, they are both well known brands that they know to be reliable. Over here in the AU, it was the Gameboy and the orginal PlayStation that people bought. Next came the GBA and the PS2 however this time alongside the PS2 was a box called the Xbox.

AU is not like the US in the way that majority of us don't browse online looking at mountains of news on the Wii, PS3 and 360. The majority just go out and buy something that they are comfortable and familiar with. Theres also the fact, like mentioned above that the Wii captures a much younger and casual audience and the PS3 is a Media Center Hub with Blu-Ray (the format set to replace DVD) built in.

Hopefully I have explained that enough, as I'm not too sure how to put it into proper words lol.

» fellow Aussie here

i second ValiX...

and to add consumers here and careful spenders but still won't hesitate to spend for value (if you should know the core here is cheaper than the Wii and the price difference between the PS3 and 360 is more glaring here than in most countries)...

and the RROD is a big factor, i think it is just mostly in America where this has gotten a certain level of acceptance...

» Well

Well it's not that strange. Xbox and Xbox 360 as a brand has never been as appealing as Playstation and Nintendo (Mainly their portable consoles in the past 10 years) as Microsoft when it comes to consoles.

The Xbox 360 is doing really well in the US, head to head with PS3 and even a bit above it in monthly sales.

In Japan and Europe the situation looks pretty different. Besides the UK (which is 360 friendly) it's not doing so well in Europe compared to PS3. And obviously not Japan.

I'm not an expert on Australia, but I do however not see this as sirprising, because I'm used to it, because the 360 isn't a very popular console where I live.

Though if it used to be in Australia and then started to decline, that's a slightly different matter perhaps.
