Yet another study was done on video gamers. This one has come to the
conclusion that gamers are more likely to be drunks and druggies, and
tend to alienate themselves from friends and family.The subjects of their study? University students. If there wasn't a better place to see if video gaming and drinking go together... (err... aside from our office...)
But anyway. The study was done by Professor Laura Walker from Brigham Young University in Utah. According to Walker, Texas Ranger:
The most striking part is that everything we found clustered around video game use is negative. It appears video games are related to a host of other negative outcomes.
It may be that young adults remove themselves from important social settings to play video games, or that people who already struggle with relationships are trying to find other ways to spend their time. My guess is that it's some of both and becomes circular.
Of the 800 students that were questioned, those who played games regularly were 10% more likely to go on a bender or smoke weed than non-gamers. They are also more likely to become withdrawn, and females in particular tend to have low self esteem.

Played video games ALL my life, never drunk a drop of liquor, and especially have never done drugs. I also have some of the best friends in the world. So f_ck your stupid survey and let me enjoy myself how I want, which is playing all the damn games I can handle.
When you see a 5 year old playing Mario you know he/she is going to grow up to be a drunk or a junkie and maybe even start robbing sewers too. XD
I don't drink booze yet I play video games, I do however smoke weed everyday sometimes from the time I get up till I go to sleep, You see it makes me concentrate alot more. When I play Socom on ps3 I need my weed. These people who did this study are Jokes. I bet none of them ever played video games.

They chose students from ONE university, didn't have a control population of non-gamers, did not provide a clear definition of "gamer" and so on. This study is pretty much a farce, and I laugh at the poor sops at whatever poor excuse for a scientific journal was willing to publish this. Maybe if the above complaints were addressed, I'd be less contemptful

I've played games since I can remember, and although I have smoked weed, and sometimes still do, it wasn't something that I did BECAUSE of games, they're just two different things that define my personality;
A lazy teenager with an urge for recreation is of course likely to play videogames and smoke weed, but it in no way means that videogames MADE them smoke weed.

I for one have been a gamer for the last 25 years. Yea, I started playing games when I was 12 and now I'm 37 and still heavily into gaming.
I did stop playing games and started drinking when I was 17 and I stopped drinking when I was 25 and I never played games during that time. I did start playing games again after I quit drinking and I have no reason to drink again.
If you wanna experience drugs then play Fallout 3. If you want to kill someone then play Manhunt 2, if you want to steal a car then play GTA 4.
There is no reason to do all that in real life as its all simulated in games.
In real life I am a nice, quiet person. I have respect for people (execpt asians).
All these studys are total crap. Why dont they do a real study instead of crap ones like this.
The reason this study says gamers are druggies is they did it at a uni where 99% of the students are druggies anyway. How stupid to say of all gamers are druggies where all the people studied are druggies....

me myself has been a gamer since 1988, thats 20 years of gaming, i have 2 kids that i already given all my ps2 games roughly all 200+ of em.
my friends also have kids which also plays computer games. non of my friends are drug users. i myself only drink socially and moderately.
i have a gaming community few years ago, and those kids never do drugs just occasionally smoke tobacco and drinks liquor mildly.

I have been gaming since the 70's. Most of you guys weren't even a cringe in your momma crotch or at the tail end of a spooge bubble of your daddy's last smack when I was gaming... So here is what causes the results of the aforementioned tests.
Rock music, a great work ethic, massive amounts of the aforementioned illicit substances and 2 or 3 individuals that still rely on peer pressure to justify their nefarious habits.
Now, having that information to work with... WTF makes anyone think that 'times' have changed so much that video games are a contributor?
