Station faces Wii death lawsuit

The Strange family files a wrongful death lawsuit against KDND-FM. - Image 1Perhaps you've heard the news about Jennifer Strange, the woman who died after participating in a radio contest called "Hold your Wee for a Wii". It seems after 107.9 KDND-FM fired 10 people, including the hosts of the Morning Rave show, the radio station now faces a wrongful death lawsuit from the family of Ms. Strange.

Roger Dreyer, a personal injury lawyer who'll represent the Strange family, said that the station knew the dangers of the water-drinking contest but decided to go ahead with it anyway. Although he did not put up an amount to be sought after in the suit, Steve Clark - a Bay Area attorney and legal commentator - did estimate that they would be "talking seven figures" including compensation for Strange's lost income and the family's loss of her care and comfort.

Now there are some rumors flying around that Nintendo could face a lawsuit, too, on top of the old lawsuit regarding the Wiimote straps. This has no confirmation as of press time; also there is no indication that Nintendo was responsible for the recklessness of the station. But Dreyer has his sights targeted on the employees responsible and the hosts of the show.

We will follow up on more developments of the lawsuit as we get them.

» Not Nintendo's fault

I can't see how Nintendo could possibly be blamed for any of this.

Thats like me having a "Shoot yourself in the face for a PS3" competition and then suing Sony after someone 'wins'.

"Nintendo is saddened to hear the recent report about a consumer who allegedly died as a result of a radio promotion to win a Wii. While Nintendo is not a sponsor of the promotion, we extend our sincere condolences to the family." - Nintendo

its the stations fault completely. No way is it nintendos fault. at one point one of the hosts said she could get water poisoning and they just laughed and said that she signed a "waver"

» who's retarded?

douche, suing hurts the radio company so maybe they'll think twice before running a contest that could kill someone. the contest should not have existed to start with, it was basically a case of almost definitely fatal.

» I personally agree.

Not that I'm on anyone's side, but looking at it from afar, I can't see anyway Nintendo could be involved in the wrongful death of Ms. Strange.

It's a sad, sad thing what happened to her, but the program's recklessness ultimately spelled her doom. It's the people behind it that should be held responsible.

It makes me think twice of joining contests now, actually. O.o

» american lawsuits

all has really gone to h3ll in america hasnt it!

if nintendo get the blame at all for this cr4p then all i can say is GROW UP.

as for the radio station, they should have revised health and safety laws when operating this "hold your wee for a wii"

although everyday i see the uk slipping further and further into the state that americans have at the moment. (the endless lawsuit list)

please stop yourselves before you destroy your country.

» Stupid Americans

I dont understand how Nintendo or even the radio station could be sued for this. In the real world with real ideas and real logic, its the Womans fault. You cant sue someone for doing something stupid.

I dont understand american Logic and american government, and you know why because they are a bunch of idiots.

Niether Nintendo or the Radio Station are to blame.

» it's not even the stations fault

they didn't force her to do it; it was her own choice. it's sad, but it's still not their fault.

im surprised they can even sue, dont radio stations have the contestants fill out waivers as do tv shows when involving people in dangerous and possibly fatal acts? seriously who these days doesnt know that holding your urine in is dangerous? you learn this in elementary school! i wouldnt sue the station ide sue the family for allowing their wife/mother to do this. if someones son had been hospitalized or died for holding their pee in at school i doubt they could sue the school for that.
