Sega's Sonic Unleashed for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii - Image 1After Sega's recent announcement regarding the upcoming Sonic Unleashed (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii), the general question on everyone's mind was: "What makes this game different from the previously released Sonic titles?"

The question was answered by none other than the game's lead designer at Sonic Team, Yoshihisa Hashimoto. During a recent interview article posted on the Official Nintendo Magazine, he stated that Sonic Unleashed "has no relation" with the last game.

Considering the relative unpopularity of the last two titles on the Xbox 360 and PS3, the new title will be built from scratch and "will purely be Sonic's new product. Of course, players will still be able to enjoy Sonic's symbolic actions such as Spin attack and Homing Attack".

In addition, Hashimoto had a few things to say regarding the new project:

As a development team, we originally started off this project planning to create Sonic Adventure 3. In our minds, this game will have more in common with the older Sonic Adventure series. It has no relation to Sonic the Hedgehog [on PS3/Xbox 360] or Sonic and the Secret Rings.

The new game will also feature unique features such a day and night system which will have a pointed impact on gameplay. For one thing, Sonic actually turns into a werehog with distinctively different movements in this form. For more details about Sonic Unleashed, keep coming back to this spot for more updates.

Not only was Sonic on the PS3/360 horrible, but also unfinished. At least they figured out how to ruin a once popular series. Now all they need to do is the exact opposite and with no new characters damnit!

They go back to the good ol days.

Sonic was teh sh|t back when it was Sonic, Tales and even Knuckles worked but back in the era of the Genesis when Sonic was all about speed... thats what sold. Since then and the whole time Sonic has been in 3D it's been nothing but a childish "cartoon" version of Sonic with 4 billion made up, forgettable retard characters.

Here, here. I agree with the above two statements we need to go back to the old school for the Sonic franchise, which is now quite frankly a joke. Cut out all this crappy characters and 3D gameplay.

We need a 2d style Sonic Megadrive game that keeps its roots but updates it with 3D graphics and HD quality, plus a few extra things, that make it feel next gen but having the solid gameplay like the old ones had. Im hoping this is what they aim to do with Unleashed... though lets not hold our breath.

Sega have forgotten its mascot, ending up with these cheap cash-ins. Nintendo have managed it with the fantastic Mario Galaxy.

Change isnt always a good thing.

Im off to play some old school Sonic, like it should be.

# I suppose somebody should tell them we want 2D...platon 2008-04-09 11:31
They're always trying with 3D, just like konami did with castlevania (and castlevania, even if it was boring, was better than any 3D sonic games). What the studios can't seem to understand is that they'd make more money doing 2D games! I mean, a 2D castlevania or sonic game would be great on next gen graphics and animations, but they think 2D is too old... wich is sad.

Since recent years after Sonic arrived to 3-D, Sega has been screwing up. I believed that the first two Sonic Adventure games were fun, but the rest since then have been lacking a good gameplay engine, introducing ridiculous characters, changing Dr. Robotnik's name (Eggman sounds really stupid), and the stories don't tend to be very good.

It's a bit sad. I still remember the times in my childhood when Sonic games were really fun. On my school's playground there was always a fight between those that liked Sonic and those who liked Mario lol.

One thing that both of this iconic plataformers was that they always had pretty much the same goal in every game. Mario was a simple plumber in a world ruled by mushrooms in which he had to save the princess from his nemesis Bowser. Sonic was a cool and fast hedgehog from a forest whose goal was to save the forest animals captured by Dr. Robotnik to use for giving power and intelligence to his machines. After the years passed Mario has stayed the same but Sonic has changed, and we can see the results. Franchises succeed because they find a formula that really works, and after each incarnation of the franchise comes it doesn't changed, just gets tweaked. Probably by constantly changing the formula for Sonic games by creating so many spin-offs it has really hurt the series, and now it's so far along that there is currently very little of its original roots in the new games (excluding the handheld Sonic games and Secret Rings).

I saw the video of Sonic Unleashed, and from what I see I think that, at least gameplay-wise, Sega might be trying to bring Sonic to it's sidescrollers roots while still having the 3-D elements. The story seems a bit weird, but if the gameplay is good then I'll give it a shot. I think that Sega should start going online and see what their fans are thinking, since it seems that it might be the best way to bring back the series. I think that a good way to bring back the series is by making a game similar to the very first one on the Genesis, bringing the fast elements to the game as well as a story that we could relate to the franchise (and start calling Dr. Robotnik by his real name, Eggman is REALLY stupid!!!).

Just a thought from a lifelong Sonic fan....

I agree about how they ruined sonic after it was made in 3D.

Also Eggman was the original japanese name for robotnik.

Lol, thanks. Seriously, no joke intended, I didn't know Eggman's name was ever supposed to be Robotnik, I thought it was always Eggman, lol. (lol might imply there is a joke, but that's just to indicate I laughed)
