Some think that Sony needs a face like Major Nelson or Miyamoto |
Ó
Alex Donaldson over at RPG Site has a rather lengthy article asking if Sony needs a "Major Nelson" figure. Before I give my take on this, here's a little background for y'all. For those not in the know, "Major Nelson" is the XBL Gamertag of Larry Hryb. Mr. Hryb is the XBL Director of Programming for Microsoft. So whenever he has things to say over at his blog, people listen. And as evinced by fan reaction, most people welcome it.
People like Major Nelson are so effective for Microsoft because fans feel like these people are fans too. Instead of "them, the console people" milking money from "us, the players", this results in "we, the console community."
So Alex Donaldson asks: Who for Sony? Who could be that "go-between" needed to bring the company closer to its fans. After all, Sony fans are some of the fiercest and most loyal of all. Who from the company could make Sony more available to the fans?
In the humble opinion of some of us, Nintendo still has to find their own Major Nelson, but they at least have the "gaming god" Miyamoto, who's quite good with the fans (that's him in the picture trying to be Link). So I say, Sony should hire Gabe from Penny Arcade. He did more for Sony with that "White knight? Well goddamn it" panel from their strip than Sony marketing did for Sony in the past few months. Then again, the Penny Arcade guys would probably like to stay independent.
Back then, Sony did well with the PS1 by targeting the older audience. They put ads for the PS1 in clubs, in sports events, and in parties for reasonably older fans. The PS1 was the big boy's console from the faceless company. All the younger kiddies wanted what their big brothers were playing.
Now that the world is online, Sony can't afford to be the faceless entity you get your entertainment drug from. Yes, as some say, Sony just has to get the product out (and out ASAP), but in a war this heated, Sony's drug needs a good pusher.

Nintendo doesn't own because otherwise they would be in first place by now. Nintendo 64 sucked and the Gamecube also sucks. So no they do not own.
*****
well if nintendo suks y does everyone want a gba, n64 snes or nes emulator, on their psp. this wouldnt have been possible w/o nintendo just my opinion. im no fanboy of ne sytems. I own me a psp and a ds an i like them both.

SONY has a long way to go to be able to keep up with MS online power... oh and yeah, don't say its free, because watching over those servers and databases cost money...
That picture looks sooooo gay
what about kaz harai

Why does Sony need a fake spokesman like that to act like they really care about the gamers?
The fact that they have been in first place for the past 2 generations without even having a "Major Nelson" means there is no reason for it.
major nelson is a tool, and has proven that he is indeed the "friendly face" of a company dead set on milking every goddam penny they can from us. he sucks, his information is designed to placate rather than satisfy, and he is VERY frequently wrong about things he claims to be %100.
don't be a fool, use your own tool.

What the f***? Are you retarded?
REGGIE FILS-AIME
for those people that don't know, miyamoto is a litte prick, he called the rare people unartistic retards because he didn't like what they did with donkey kong even dkc was one of the highest selling game for the snes. he also called the pokemon creator a retard too and called pokemon a fad even though pokemon games are the highest selling games for the gameboy/ds and the "fad" is still going strong after 10 years. miyamoto is just a little ***** for all i care
Reggie Fils-Aime looks a lot like Donkey Kong. So naturally he is the perfect spokeperson for Nintendo.
sony at least has KOJIMA who rules them all.
to # 6
why is there a bigger croud for psx emulators than?
plus.. sony stuff harder to emulate hahaha is easy to emulate the 64 bit crap n64 got lol, sry but im just a sony fan... I have to say something in return, plus... is not nintendo who made those games, for example... front mission and final fantasy are all made by square soft.. not nintendo
so yea...
Nintendo is gay
Look how quickly this degraded into worthless drivle.
"After all, Sony fans are some of the fiercest and most loyal of all." = People who sit around and say "Nintendo is gay" all day long.
Only from the Sony camp. I will repeat this as many times as I witness this consistency.
guess what? nintendo really doesnt own, ever since developers had sony to go to when nintendo treated them like ***** they havnt owned at all. They have a few high selling wonders from their tried and true and pokemon and the few and far inbetween top sellers. People put SNES and NES and GBA emulators on thier psp because they arnt what nintendo is now, they are for profit, they put out cheap systems and dont take any lose for them. The GBA has had a monopoly on the handheld market since tetris died out then pokemon took over how many years later, then nintendogs took the tomagatchi thing to a new level with brainage getting the older folk. Besides Nintendos tried and true, and their few hit wonders, they havnt owned really anything. The N64 had a few good games outside the tried and true, but Sony kicked their asses with so many more good games on the ps1. We want N64 on our psp for those few games, SNES for the great games from when devs had to make games for Nintendo, NES cause it brought back gaming to an even bigger extent than atari before it died it out and because we grew up with it. If we had the possibility of it, we would love to have Dreamcast games on our psp's as well as Saturan games. Might not be as many but we do want it. Dont forget that their are emulators for the Master system, MAME, atari, commador 64, genesis, and hell even a few for computers on the psp.
To be blunt, Nintendo did own when they were the choice for gaming, they had the games. They treated devs *****astically, so now they are cheap and looking for profit out of the box of every system. I can at least give props to Sony and MS for taking a dive for bringing out larger advances, than multiple revisions of the same hardware fixing artifical problems with the current. Yes im talking about the Gameboy.
Sony already got Kaz, Ken, and Phil Harrision already. And most of all, Sony doesn't need a bald dude with a tatoo like Nelson.
I think you got Major Nelson confused for Peter Moore...
I think the article meant to state that Sony needs representatives that are RESPECTABLE, not representatives that make laughable remarks all day.
Riiiidge RACER! Giant Enemy crab. Massive Damage. 599 US dollars. 2 HDMI outputs. 2 internal ethernet ports. up to 7 wireless controllers.
Thank you Sony. Thank you Kaz. And Phil Harrison, you can bet your flying stars I'm throwing away my Inspiron 9300 laptop for you PS3 "desktop replacement". You bet.
