"...we bear Sony no grudge, it's impossible to ignore the fact that the news of the week will affect Nintendo, and so we have a stake in the fallout."
"One man's misfortune, is another man's gain," as the saying goes. According to him, Nintendo and Microsoft would be able to cash in on Sony's announcement regarding the PS3 delay. The article continues to point out that the announcement heard around the world was somehow expected.
Weeks of manufacturing rumors were circulating around the web. Advertising campaigns were slowing down. The 500,000 units for America and Japan and the ostracizing Europe is a huge PR nightmare. With vast European gamers now trying out, some even converting to, other consoles.
Add to that, their less than usual stellar showing on such events as E3 and the like. There wasn't even a Sony representative in the THQ 2006 Lineup Event in Australia. There were also some reports stating that Sony knew it was having a problem with the limited units on the launch date, but decided to keep it confidential until the very last minute.
Naturally, the competitors, Microsoft and Nintendo, will take the opening that Sony has literally given away. Just a few days after the Sony announcement, Nintendo reassured european gamers that they are on track and the Nintendo Wii will be out before the end of the year as promised.
The writer analysed that the Wii and the Xbox360 will be the only new "new gen" consoles by the holidays. Xbox 360 Marketing people are putting a spin on it as well, saying that they won the "PR" battle. Still according to him, come the holidays the DS Lites will sell more in one week in Japan than what they'll get at the PS3 launch (100,000 units).
He also questioned whether the Blu-Ray is worth the delay. One of the main reasons for the delay was the limited availability of Blu-Ray technology; it's supposed to enhance gaming graphics to HD-quality, and has the ability to hold up quite a lot of info. The Xbox360 and the Nintendo DS have no such capability yet they sell a lot. According to Nintendo, they will focus more on gameplay than anything else.
So what has Sony done so far to improve their image to the world? According to the writer, the company may now be seen as unreliable. Sony says that people should focus not on the launch unit numbers, but what they'll be providing by the end of the year.
In the end, we all hope everything turns out and we get great games from all three major game consoles because, as the writer points out, "we're all in this together, bound by a mutual love of games."

and the next gen does start with sony because the almost 100% says so, no crap like far cry predator!
i do hate on nintendo just for fun. they make it seem like they invented "inovation" without third party they would be ***** like their two last consoles. how much could they milk mario only a fanboy knows. they played it the smartest this gen with a low priced system and a good pr department. the name Wii gave them good pr it makes me sick. i bet they get away with games that look like snes and says its fun. and people will buy it. the can pump out games twice as good as RE4 but i think its going to make lots of quick cash. wak-a mole any one.
