Slight hitches with running YouTube on Wii Opera?

People are having so much fun with their new Opera betas on their Wiis: viewing pages, posting on forums, commenting on articles, and watching videos on their Ninty consoles, but the road isn't all that smooth, however, as there are people who are reporting on forums, especially Opera's, that they're having erratic YouTube experiences.

Reports vary among the users, but the general consensus is that there are times when YouTube would not work at all in their browser, or it would run for a few minutes and then simply stop, and so on. On the other hand, there are other people whose YouTube surfing went smoothly, which just adds to the confusion.

Some of the speculation of why this happens revolves around the version of Flash that Opera beta is using, and if it's mismatched to YouTube's requirements. Another floated, and more plausible, theory is a sort of "memory wall" beyond which the Wii could not handle any more data packets streaming in. One observation is that the erratic problems occur when one of the YouTube ads is in Flash code rather than HTML.

However, like we said, some people find absolutely no hitch, hangup, bump, freeze, or whatnot in their WiiTube viewing. Proof of this is Gamertag Radio's godfree playing with his Wii Opera browser, looking at stuff in the Gamertag YouTube page, and listening to streaming music and podcasts. Yeah, it gets confusing, doesn't it? Why does it work for some and others have to bear with hangups?

No word from Opera, Nintendo, or YouTube about this yet, and it's all strictly forum talk right now. Hey, it's a beta, but hopefully, things will improve.

» The problem

The problem is actually all upon the speed of the person's internet connection. I have a fairly fast connection, but sometimes it has hiccups and I have to reset it. During those hiccups, YouTube would lose connection and be unable to finish loading the video or the connection would be so slow that the connection would timeout and YouTube reads it as simply having no Flash program to use. But during all those other times for me, YouTube would work perfectly fine. So if you do have problems, it's about time to get a better wireless router; one with a lot more distance and power.

» News to me...

I go to Youtube almost exclusively with the Wii Opera and I haven't had a problem yet except maybe a slight hiccup here and there.

» Not too bad

I've had small problems. Hiccups and sometimes a video stops but the thing is a beta with months left in development. I really can not complain.

» Yep

My Youtube experiance made my wii die lol

I loaded youtube and all was fine for a moment...then my wii froze

I had to unplug the entire system as it would not turn off.

When i rebooted it was a black screen for a while and then i got an error mesage about corrupted system files.

I rebooted again and the wii loaded this time to the channels but then froze again.

Left the console unpluged for 10 mins, switched it on and I was back in business...

I wont be going back to youtube untill theres a opera update :) lol

» forget youtube problems...

i can barely run the internet channel at all. if i run in EDTV mode (which i'm always in), my tv skitzes right out when i load the internet channel, and i have to restart the wii. even if i run in standard definition, every few seconds it switches screen modes and goes black for a moment. bleh.

» Not on my Wii

I go to Youtube and news and even check my e-mail but at no time did any of those problems happen. It's kind of neat that youtube is working on the Wii along with all the websites it's cool to have it on a console! Now anyway if you are one of the unlucky few who are getting problems have to fear and remember this is a Trail Version and the full complete one is on it's way come March

» ummm

this is probably a dumb question i know...but where do you go to by the cable to hook the wii up to the internet.

by SlidEx - 2006-12-25 02:37
» -_-

You have to connect it to your wireless network, or wait for Nintendo's Wii Lan adapter around January 2007
