Size matters: how big is your machine? |

Curious how the next-gen consoles compare in size when they're lined up beside one another? Here's an interesting little chart from Jason Chen that shows the PS3 (red), Xbox 360 (green), and Wii (purple). Heck!, it even has a cameo of the old school NES (yellow) console.
If you remember, these "size comparison" projects have been done before. Some replicated a PS3 model in wood and compared it with the 360. Another even made cardboard versions of the Wii and PS3. Although you might think that these kinds of projects are worthless, think again. Knowing the size of the console you intend to buy also helps you make a decision. Do you have the shelf space for it? Would you be able to fit multiple consoles in the little notch under your TV? In any case, the dimensions of the console is still a factor in purchasing the machine.
So does size really matter? Depends who you're asking. Because sometimes, some people would prefer their console to be monstrous and macho like the PS3, while some would rather have it small and lithe like the Wii. Regardless, the age old question of size will always have different answers.

But this is a good graphical representation that beats the models because it shows in stark black and white (er, in stark pastels) the differences in size.
I was like "Woah! I never really realized just how small the Wii is!" I mean, I knew it was small, but when you look at it like that, as a pretty little box next to a other pretty bigger boxes, you gotta wonder what the differences in technology, miniaturization , heat, and DURABILITY are.
Graphics may matter more than size, but size determines the configuration of the hardware, and when or if that hardware goes bust, there won't be no more graphics! LOL

Lol @ the guy who thinks the HD-DVD drive would make a difference in the 360's size if it was internal. Have you seen a bare HD-DVD drive? They're the same size as any Blu-Ray or DVD drive...
I don't get why people care about the size of a 1 ft console. If you need to worry about that, you need a bigger... house or something
And jesus #6, English please?

Not only are you entirely off-topic, but you're in entirely the wrong blog. (Same goes for some others)
I'm all for rational debate. But please, keep your NDF representin self away. This ain't risk, stop trying to 'conquer' other console-specific blogs.

Well I guess the size doesnt really matter (unless it is overly big...) its what is inside that counts.

Excellent point. Just goes to show you how far a person will go to defend the things they love. In the end, all the consoles will attain a certain level of success. Each console appears to be appealing to certain demographics. People tend to defend the things they love, even if its by using political tactics to ensue a "level-headed" argument. The fact remains that size does not matter to a fan-boy. What some one claims to be big and ugly can instantly become advanced and groundbreaking. If the PS3 managed to be half the size of the Wii, than sony fans would cling to that. Its not that they're holding on to false hope, its that they're absolutely certain that Sony will prevail and that whatever they dish out must be of good intentions. I really do not blame them, for all we know the PS3 can rise above and beyond all these negative expectations.
I for one try to stay away from all this bullcrap bickering over which one is better and who is going to win. I'm not buying a console so I can be on the winning side. I'm buying one so I can play the games that I want to play. Hell if I care about graphics or motion sensors. I care about good games that strike my interest. The sad thing is that all these fanboys will go to the lengths of never buying from the competetion in order to have their side be more successful. Its a shame though, your all buying in to exactly what the companies want - Blindly folling consumers. Enjoy your consoles.

I heard that too. It will be interesting to see if that was true by seeing the number of PS3s they buy in Japan.

How many 360's have 'exploded'? Ok, now, how many laptops with Sony batteries have quite literally exploded?
I'm (seriously) not suggesting the PS3 will suffer from severe battery defects, but such statistics/track records should at least be noted before making '360's double as grills' type remarks.
@ 25, yea, and then a year later we can expect PS3P featuring BMD (Blu-ray mini disks). lol. I would apologize for the 'fanboyic' comment, but is it not an actual possibility?

Now, we shall see if size is the determining factor or just nationalism.

More room means less heat and longer life I bet for the console. So PS3 not only the best console ever with best graphics, more, and more features and so on.
But the biggest next gen console as well. Woooooooooooooo lol.

Xbox360 + Power "Brick" takes up much more space then the PS3.
Not to mention this size calculation doesnt take into the addition of adding a HDD which makes the XBox360 bigger
So that slight increase in height the PS3 has will be just around the same when you add a HDD to the xbox360.
Also Consider the PS3 has a internal PSU instead of external.
The PS3 is probably less prone to failure then the Xbox360. Why? Because they had more time to test the system out.
Consider this, the final design of the Xbox360 was decided around the same time they started prouction. Watch the videos about the Xbox360 and how they went through many many design ideas.
They had less then 6 months to test the design and produce it for launch. That meant very little testing at all. This is why the first systems didnt do well. Only after a good amounto f testing, 1 year, did they finally get the bugs out of the design.
The PS3 final design was known 2 years ago. That gave them nearly 2 years to test the design for bugs and hardware problems.
The only thing that they were debating was if they wanted to remove the PSU to make cooling better. Other then that the system design stayed the same for over a year and was tested.
Whats the chance of the PS3 falling into the same problems the Xbox360 did? Very Very Slim.
Its very true that a bare HD-DVD drive is just as small as any other drive but the fact that the add-on isnt a bare drive, its a HD-DVD drive, a USB HUB, and a Drive Enclosure. So its size will be bigger.
The Japanese are all about size to function ratio. The Xbox played movies and games. Thats 2 functions and one of them wasnt possible out of the box.
The PS3, DVD player, BD Player, Games, Personal Computer, Media Center.
The PS3 was designed for Japanese by Japanese people. There is a serious space issue in Japan. For the cost of a one bedroom apartment in Japan, you could rent a 3 bedroom with the bells and whistles in America.
Space is a tight issue so the more features you can fit in a small amount of space will be the winning factor in Japan. Thats why the Xbox360 isnt doing to well, it can play games and movies and not much else without the help of other devices.
So is it really bigger? Maybe in size but the PS3 eclipses the Xbox360 in terms of features and usability. You wont be able to do half of the things in your xbox360 that is possible out of the box with the ps3. Thats why Japanese people will love it, because for 500 or 600, they get the ability to replace alot of devices in their home.
those of you who have a normal apartment in america. Consider this, the size of your bedroom is the size of an Apartment in populated areas of Japan like Tokyo. Everything is very cramp, everything you need to survive slides out or flips out of the walls.
So imagine your Bedroom, Kitchen, bathroom, Living room all squeezed into a room thats around 12x12 feet if your lucky enough to get a place that big. Tell me that you would rather have a PC, Xbox360, HD-DVD addon, or one PS3.

Hence I wouldn't expect a new slim PS3 model until atleast 4 years from launch (2010/2011).

P.S. The quote says "PLAY B3YOND" because it is hinting that if you skip the PS3 for now and wait a couple of years "Beyond" then there will be a smaller and better PS3.
