Glenn Entis - SIGGRAPH keynote speaker - Image 1Remember Glenn Entis? Academy-Award-winning senior VP and chief visual and technical officer for EA Games? Made that little remark a while ago about Final Fantasy? He was invited as one of three keynote speakers for SIGGRAPH and his speech had some interesting insights to offer.

Basically his points were a much more lucid and detailed version of the thoughts he had always expressed about the gaming industry, and this time he also compares it to the film industry. He also brought up the same point he made when he cited FF as an example, that graphics with more polygons lose their realism when their motions wasn't as realistic.

It's when a character's visual appearance suggests a certain experience of life, but when their movement falls short of that expectation, the character feels like the undead. [...] Just adding polygons makes it worse. We must be able to believe what characters do, think and feel, but we must also believe how they response to unpredictable input.

He explained his point by citing the less-than-fluid motions of muppets and characters from "Final Fantasy: the Spirits Within." Basically his point is that the 3D modelling is stunning, but it loses its realism when it starts to move because the motions look fake.

He also compares this with graphics in film and has high hopes for graphics in video games. He says that while "graphics in film are nearing the plateau but the best thrill moments are yet to come in gaming." He says this in light of the fact that graphics in films aren't real time. It's pre-rendered and doesn't need any processing once it's being shown. Video games, on the other hand, demand control from gamers: control of their character, control of their environment, and control of tools.

While he believes that it's impossible for real-time graphics that video games thrive on to match the pre-rendered beauty of graphics in films, there will come a time where the differences will be so small it will be imperceptible. Imagine controlling the "Transformers" as beautifully rendered and fluid as they appeared in the movie. Now that's the future of graphics.

He sums up his thoughts best as he says "Gaming has made the fastest improvements in graphics, but what is exciting is that we still have the furthest way to go. That's phenomenally exciting."

» and...

this is coming from somebody that uses the same motion captured files of sports games from 2003 in all or most of the "new" games? ya, its "real" when you copy and paste motion, update the graphics a lil, and make avatars that slightly change looks with a new name and be called "completly new"...the guy should learn from mgs4 and RE5...way more real

» ps3

the idiot must not know that ps3 is easily capable of going b3yond movies, like in killzone and final fantasy, also drakes fortune, and gt5, he needs to catch up

the only future the 360 has three red rings. lol.

» ROFL, no

Sorry, KZ2 and Drake look good, but nowhere near some of the CGI found in movies.

Perhaps you haven't seen a big-budget Hollywood movie in the past decade, in which case YOU need to do some catching up. Those games come nowhere close to the level of realism in Transformers for example

» MGS4 on Xbox360!

aww, youre just upset that the ps3 only hope of a future is still over a year away. :(

» 360 wins!

i never thought i would see someone so far up sonys butthole that they even use their slogans, thats just b3yond lame.

also, i know that since youre a sony fanboy and had to make a huge leap from a console that had the WORST graphics last gen (ps2) to a console that has the second best graphics (ps3) of this gen, but everything the ps3 has shown has been poor to mediocre at best.

Killzone - all colors are brown or some shade of it, plays worse than it looks, and still doesnt beat gears of war.

Drakes Fortune - i actually like this one and will probably pick it up once it comes out. but its graphics arent really that impressive if youve already played some of the better titles on 360.

GT5 - LOL, dude dont make me laugh. Forza 2 mops the floor with GT. From everything to the lame jazz music on the desktop screen, to the 15mph single car "racing", and even in the flat grass boooring race tracks. Dont mention GT like its something to brag about, because its definately not.

» You guys just don't get it.

Go read it again, what he says does make sense.

Eventhough a game graphics make look super real, their actual motions won't. The only game doing what Glenn Entis is saying, partially is heaven sword for the PS3. They look at key movements and what not to add that type of realism in their game.

Im not someone that is into graphics, i still get kicks of N64 and Nes. But i do have a nintendo wii and a 360, so don't call me biased.

» Graphics will be awesome.

I'm guessing within the next 50 years games will be as realistic as movies are today which is almost lifelike.

» Famitsu Employee (Reviewer)

I have been working for Famitsu for the past 2 years. I'm one of those reviewers at Famitsu. Just for a reference, Famitsu is like the biggest game related magazine company in Japan. My specialty is on western shooters and RPGs (I mean I mostly write reviews for shooters and RPGs); but I have more than enough data and info to write reviews for games in other genres.

[X360]

- Bioshock (review score 80): (Cons) single-player isn’t very compelling; repetitive

- Alan Wake (75): dated graphics

- Gears of War (90): hide-shoot-hide-shoot-(repeat this 500 times more)

- Fable 2 (70): ret+rded combat system

- Halo 3 (65): H3's graphics is even worse than the 2 year old game Perfect Dark Zero (PDZ and H3 both are made by the same company called Microsoft Gaming Studios. PDZ's graphics is much better than H3's because PDZ was made from scratch to take advantage of most power from the X360 hardware). H3’s run n gun ret+rded gameplay can’t be compared with other blockbusters such as Call of Duty 4.

- Splinter Cell: Conviction (55): f+cking weak combat system

- Project Gotham Racing 4 (85):

- Forza Motorsport 2 (80):

- Lost Planet (50): just another 3rd rated sh+t

- Lost Odyssey (55): mediocre

- Crackdown (30): trash

- Burnout Revenge (85):

- Dead Rising (60): hack n slash

- Dead or Alive 4 (55): weak combats

- Too Human (20): garbage

- Ace Combat 6 (10): should be freeware

- Overlord (10): another freeware

- Halo Wars (30): 10 year old graphics

- Mass Effect (30): even PDZ has better graphics

- Blue Dragon (20): only for kids

- Eternal Sonata (15): only for kids

- Shadowrun (10): another freeware

- Huxley (10): crap

[PS3]

- Killzone 2 (90): gameplay seems generic

- MotorStorm (90)

- Warhawk (80): sadly failed to become a blockbuster

- Metal Gear Solid 4 (90): too achromatic

- Heavenly Sword (90): combat system is even better than the most sold games, Ninja Gaiden and God of War

- Tekken 6 (80): environment graphics is bland

- Ratchet & Clank Future (65): only for kids

- Unreal Tournament 3 (65): terrible run n gunner

- Haze (60): even worst than UT3

- Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (90):

- Folklore (20): sigh

- Ninja Gaiden Sigma (70): dated graphics

- Resistance: FoM (55): too achromatic and undetailed graphics

- LittleBigPlanet (10): only for kids

- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (15): f+cking weak and boring gun & game-play

- Formula One (40): terrible online mode

- PS3 Home (10): only for lifeless and jobless teenagers

- Infamous (15): another garbage from Sony

- Lair (10): hack n slash

- SOCOM Confrontation (10): trashy graphics and gameplay

- Loco Roco [PS3] (10): only for kids

- Heavy Rain (90): best graphics + emotional gameplay

» lol what a noob

I like how about 75% of those games arent even in beta stages, yet you somehow manage to get a playable demo up and running so that you may review it. so...where do you hide your time machine?

the kicker in this case was this...

"Halo 3 (65): H3's graphics is even worse than the 2 year old game Perfect Dark Zero (PDZ and H3 both are made by the same company called Microsoft Gaming Studios. PDZ's graphics is much better than H3's because PDZ was made from scratch to take advantage of most power from the X360 hardware). H3%u2019s run n gun ret+rded gameplay can%u2019t be compared with other blockbusters such as Call of Duty 4."

...LOL!!! for someone who can give such priceless advice about reviews of so many games, you sure dont know jack about them. Microsoft Gaming Studios only PUBLISHES both Halo 3 and PDZ, that is the only similarity. MS doesnt touch Halo 3 nor did they have a hand in PDZ. The Developers create everything that has to do with the game, publishers just fund the money to proceed with the projects.

Just thought Id give you some knowledge. As for all the other game scores, well theyre only your opinion and not the opinion of the people who review for Famitsu. No real reviewer is going to sum up any game by incorporating the word retarded in there anywhere.

God, you kids and your internet these days. You think you can fool anyone just by saying "blah blah blah I work for blah, my friend is blah and this is blah blah". Too bad its so easy to see through your charade, now go back to your moms basement and write up some more bogus reviews that no one else cares about. and remember, be creative!

» HAHAHAHA

And there goes AxSxSxMxIxLxK.

How amusing. As far as I can remember, GT was the father of racing sims for consoles. There's a reason why GT has more press coverage worldwide, more support from actual racers, and nothing but rave reviews from Top Gear. Read any car mag from any country and GT will always be touted as the superior racer. Forza? ROFL. I'll take 1000+ cars over with accurate physics over car damage and bad framerates any day.

GoW had a $h!tty color pallet as well...black, gray...er...$h!tty green? And the game played well. Killzone has a BS pallet, so it will be just as kick ass...though i kinow it'll flop cause of the hype.

IN REGARDS to the ARTICLE: HE IS RIGHT.

Games today look bad ass and defined when you look at screenshots. Take look at the game in motion and you SHOULD be disappointed. FF13, MGS4, Halo3, COD4, MOH...looks like you're playing a damn ROBOT.

NEW ANIMATION TECHNIQUES ARE NEEDED IN ORDER TO MOVE FORWARD IN THE GS:LFKNE:OISN?FSLEF

» I actually like what AoxomamoxoA has said *gasp*

Yeah, how exactly did you review Fable 2 and MGS4, two games that aren't out until 2008? Game reviewers get games on average a week before release, sometimes more than a week, sometimes less, and sometimes not at all. But half a year?

Here's another "kicker": Famitsu gave Resistance an average of 8 out of 10 (it scored 9/8/8/8 for 33/40, or 82.5/100). So where did you get 55?

BTW, the Japanese LOVE LocoRoco, the PSP version scored 9/8/9/8 for 34/40 or 85/100. I guarantee you the PS3 game will get much higher than 10/100

» what?

the next consoles I dont know where you get 50 years from more like 5 years
