Should we be looking for another console in the market?

Industry needs new hardware launches in next two years - Image 1The family tree of video game consoles have branched in and branched out over seven generations, and this current generation comprised of the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360, and the Wii, is arguably the most heated arena of video game competition yet.

Currently, we're only a brief period into the life cycles of this gen. Both the Wii and the PS3 haven't even reached their second year out. We've seen some great games released for all three, Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox 360, PS3) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, to name some prime examples. Given that, is it already time to look for a new console in the market?

I don't think so, but then I'm not an analyst. John Stevenson, analyst for Shore Capital, believes that the video game market - in the UK, at least - will reach its zenith this year, and that if we don't see a new console arrive, the market can only decrease in the years to come:

Unless we see new hardware launches into the UK market over the next 2 years, which appears unlikely at present, then we believe profits will peak this year and fall consistently over the following three years.

UK games retailer Game, on the other hand, believes otherwise. According to its chief executive, Lisa Morgan, the market is "absolutely not" at its peak. She remarks that the market is driven by an already diverse set of consoles. Another analyst, Nick Bubb of Pali International, echoes these sentiments: "Given the much broader and deeper range of formats and consumers involved...the games market boom is likely to continue."

Although I disagree with Stevenson's remark, he does pose a chicken-and-egg question worth contemplating on: does hardware sell software, or does software sell hardware? That question may be hard to answer, given the current set of consoles in this generation. What do you guys think?

» Mix the 3

Unless it can boast the power of a PS3 with the Online of the Xbox360 and the gameplay of the Wii with a cheap price tag... no thanks. A fourth console will only bring more frustration to the common gamers.

It'll have to be something very amazing because gamers already have what they want with the 3 main game console.

» the gameplay of the Wii

Wouldn't you prefer the gameplay of an actually good system like PS3 or 360? Wii sucks gameplay wise.

The market will shine for the next years, with all the JRPGs coming, japan will bloom of console sales as well as the world for games like final fantasy 13, infinite undiscovery, etc. Also, games like kill zone 2, god of war 3, etc will get the sales move up again in one to two years.

A 4th console won't pop this year, and not in the coming years too. The only one I can think of making a new console is apple, but even if they would make a console, it would be impossible before the end of this gen. When the next gen will begin, who knows.

My gess for the war: X360 will win (sadly since I don't own one and since I hate M$hit). The PS3 will finish second and the wii in the last position (not for console unit sold, lol, but for the money the games will make). The games make the consoles win, and the x360 is leading by a large margin now. Final fantasy 13 could turn the flow upside down, making japan enter the scene, but Squeenix is doing like 4 x360 exclusive games for the x360 so I don't think it'll save sony.

» SEGA

well to be honest I was never a big fan of Sega I never owned one but I thought the Dreamcast was pretty hot even dough I only owned Nintendo’s and Playstation’s but game wise the Sega had and has loads of grate games one of the best in my opinion is yakuza witch I played on ps2 and was grate fun but a fourth console in the marked rite now would only be crushed by giants running the race at the moment but I would love to see a Sega being released in the future witch I doubt due to Sega’s financial status.

These consoles are just fine for now.

» Oh shut the hell up Tenchi

You might not agree with his opinion on the Wiis gameplay, and you're entitled to your own opinion. Noone can argue that it has the best or worst, it's all opinion, so we can't say you're wrong...

But was that really necessary? What did you get out of complaining about the Wii there?

It's as rubbish as a "First!" post.

Personally though, I'm going to go with John. Mainly because no-one at Game ever has a clue what they're talking about, so I'm pushed away from believing the Game employee.

» Oh, and I forgot to mention

Everyone's assuming he means a 4th console.

No-one realised, the DS is somewhere near the being replaced point?

» err...

theres 5 consoles?!! he's obviously forgot about the DS and PSP?

you can't possiblly dismiss these two as just handhelds, coz they are as important as the BIG 3??

» yes

we need a true futuristic way of playing

not just a gamepad

the wii technoogy needs strenghened and the console it self needs to be more powerful

the ps3 is at an advantage and is able to bring the next gen now

if sony makes the effort and a huge risk

as game devs would be uncomfortable with move

and ps3 exclusivity

this will hopefully be moved on when a new xbox comes out

also ofcourse software sells hardware

otherwise youd have a ÂŁ500 paper weight

I'm entitled to my opinion? Then don't tell me to shut up. According to gamerankings and metacritic, wii has the lowest rated library of recent consoles. I own a modded wii, a stack of burnt games, and I still don't have one ONE I actually liked enough to have bought the system for. What did you get out of complaining about my complaining?

» Microsoft will have the next console within 3 years probably.

Once bluray starts to take off and games get so large that they cant fit on a dvd-9 disk Microsoft will have to come out with a new system with a bluray drive. Right now the bluray disks are too damn expensive. I dont want to pay $25 or more for a movie but if they get down to $20 or less I think bluray will really start to sell. Plus the price of putting a bluray drive in an Xbox(720?) will continue to get cheaper every year and so will the price of the potential hardware that they could put in it. If Microsoft is smart they will have Gears of War 3 as a launch title. I would buy one.

» 360 won't have time to "win"

In order for 360 to win, 2 things need to occur: 1) regular, non-gamer types would have to want to see one of the white hourglass-shaped hulks sitting next to their DVD players and AV equipment. 2) Microsoft has to have enough confidence in it not to prematurely replace it. ---As to the former, I don't see that happening in the long run (as opposed to PS3, which is "AV rack-friendly" in appearance). As to the latter, I would expect that a 720 is already in advanced stages of development for a 2010 release (in line with the Analyst's forecasting). If there's anything to count on Microsoft for, it's their inability to play without a 'stacked deck'. Sony proved with PS3 that they can be willing to bet it all on high technology and advanced design. Microsoft is all about adding incremental sales (even if older tech suffers for it --- see Vista vs XP or Millenium vs W98sp2 or 360 vs Xbox1).

Microsoft will probably be the first to release a new console, eager to put the whole RROD thing behind them.

If they did release it in 2010, a 5 year life cycle for the Xbox 360 is more than fair.

What will be interesting, is if Sony decides to release the PS4 in 2010 as well to not fall a year behind as they did in this generation, dooming them to last place.

» alrdy got the 4th console, pc

i dont think tht the market will go down without a 4th console coming out. i still consider pc as the 4th console anyways, and wit games like civilization, world of warcraft, spore, and command and conquer, who rly needs to make another console. sure the pc sales arent at the top, but they still have a run in this console war, whether or not ppl recognize it

» my own two cents on the outcome

I own all three systems and i kinda agree with some of the points that platon and damonous mentioned except i think that wii will come in first. no matter how much u say games sell systems the wii has proved that wrong being a constant seller at work showing no sign of slowing down anytime soon. as for the whole 360 vs ps3 issue i think its still up in the air. Blue-ray aside (we are talking about a GAME System not a god damn blue-ray player get it straight people) i actually do use my 360 more than my ps3 only because the games available for it at the moment (Love lost odyssey and blue dragon cant wait for the other JRPGS). now some of you might start to name all the exclusives but people have different tastes and both systems appeal to different people.

They should merge and create a console.

It would be called, The Segcom, or the Capga, or SegCapacom. Yeah....

I would be shocked if Sega comes back with the Hardware business.

I know they can whoop all 3 consoles if they do.

» Sad

I'm sorry to hear that your parents bought you a Wii for the family, but since you are young, you think it is boring and for old folks. You want the 360 or PS3 because that is suppose to make you cool and hip and because kids your age, who spend 1/3 of their life sitting on their rear wasting away in front of Metal Gear, Grand Theft and Resident Evil, don't think it stacks up to what your neighbor has. And who goes to school and tells their friend about that race that had on Donkey Kong Barrel Blast with their Wii. They get laughed at right? Get over it... until you grow up and have to pay for your own belongings and support yourself, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Modding your Wii is not cheap, and you can say, "I'm not a kid, I am an adult, living on my own", but we all know the truth. He is complaining about you complaining because you are a spoiled brat. You should be outside playing and getting exercise, but instead you complain about the Wii, most likely because it actually gives you a work out, unlike turning into "Jabba the Hutt" with the PS3 and 360.

The only console that needs a next gen version is the Wii because it never was next gen. Aside from mysteriously high sales, it has all the makings of a failed console.
